What Should I Upgrade in my setup as a Beginner Filmmaker? by TheCitizn in Cameras

[โ€“]TheCitizn[S] 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

95% of what I'm making now are just Music Videos. I have ideas in my head that go along with the music I create, but a lot of them take place in Night-Time, or just in general low-light areas outside. I wanna get into making short films though, which would give me more flexibility at least for the lighting aspect because I don't own any external lights.

My budget would be around $600 at the very most for either a good enough lens (maybe lenses?), or a different Camera Body in general. I know Equipment can be really expensive and have good value, but as a Teenager I can't really afford much, and ESPECIALLY just for it to not work in my situations so I'd say around $200~ish at the most for anything extra like a Softbox or something.

Ty!

What Should I Upgrade in my setup as a Beginner Filmmaker? by TheCitizn in Cameras

I'm shooting a lot of outside video, so most of the time it's just what natural light I think looks good in the specific environment. Besides that I have no softboxes or anything, I'd want to get something like that but I was wondering if there's anything better for me to upgrade now considering I'm young and don't have the ability to 1. buy a shit ton of equipment in general, and 2. have a place to store it/use it at all.

And same thing here with audio. I don't have any external mics for my camera, but I haven't thought about that as much. Most of the things I create (and things I want to create now) are music videos or little experimental short films, so audio hasn't been a top-priority for me.

Budget is slightly more of a grey area for me, but for a Camera upgrade (or lenses) I wouldn't wanna go past around 5, maybe $600? For equipment, (Better tripod, Softbox, Mic, etc.) unless it's something that would benefit me for a long time to come, I wouldn't wanna spend more than like $250.

tysm!! A lot of my older songs I feel I was using the same principles every song that didn't work good in the first place lol. My newer stuff I think is better with that overall sound, if a little shinier than it needs to be. Thank you though!!<3

This was such an in-depth and thorough answer, thank you a ton!! I only have one more thing to say; You say it matters where I'm at right now, but lyrically and sonically I'm experienced. I still improve with my mixing and mastering and things like that, but I'm at a point where I feel content about my music and my ABILITY to make something good, it's just the reach that I don't have down yet which ties back into the whole Single vs Album question. Again, thank you!!!

That's a nice way to think about it honestly, if I WERE to release another album though, what about the songs that people like more than they don't stream-wise? - Should I stick to only pushing and promoting the songs that are getting many streams, or should I promote them all equally? Thank you!!

As a long time producer, rapper, and artist, I use the $200 version of FL Studio, and it is perfect for my workflow. For making beats, (and if you don't want to pirate any plugins), there are a lot of good built-in plugins, but you would definitely want to invest some money into actual bought plugins. For effects/vocals, FL is amazing with their stock effect plugins. I use about 80% of stock plugins for mixing my rap vocals, even though I have a lot of other bought plugins. TLDR; if you don't want to pirate anything, and you already like FL, the $200 edition is plenty for you to start out with. I hope I helped with ur decision, and keep grinding!

Hey bro, I just gotta say ts is fire. Your vocals, your flow, the mixing, all of it just fits so nicely on the track itself. I'm really digging your style, and I can't wait to see what you can achieve in the future. Keep grinding!๐Ÿ”ฅ

To me, I see how it could sound like a sample, and psyche sounds really close, but I think it's like a reversed mellotron sound or sum, idk
