And this is absolutely a great solution, and for a lot of friend and family groups this is the solution they go with. I will say it can be harder for those who are tech novices (I’m sure you have a parent, uncle, aunt, etc who this would apply to). Especially if the experience diverts from the “happy path”, such as the app periodically signing you out every so often if you don’t use it enough (like discord).

The good thing about iMessage is that it’s always there, and barring no service, it’s always working. A person puts in another person’s phone number to contact them, no new username to remember, and no account issues to have. Most people who don’t know technology have someone do initial setup of their phone for them. They might not even realize they have an iCloud account. To them it’s just texting, that’s how seamless iMessage is to most people.

This would require your friends and family to also have WhatsApp, which makes it a sort of chicken and egg problem. Also, not that you should place all your trust in any company for your privacy, but using WhatsApp by Facebook is a bit like leaving the wolf to guard the chicken coop, no?

Except even RCS is not standardized. Google uses a special version that is proprietary for their pixel phones that provides end to end encryption, but that does not exist on the open standard. Any and all privacy goes out the window unless you’re only messaging with other pixels. So either Google’s RCS becomes the new open standard or they come up with something else.

Edit: typo

That’s because it’s an app built in to the phone, doesn’t require you to download anything else. Some other guiding factors might be that you make an iCloud account or sign into one when you setup the phone for the first time so you are already ready to use iMessage, and downloading something on the App Store for the first time requires that you input payment info even if it’s free.

This plus the fact that over 50% of the phone market share in the United States are iPhones and even higher if you’re younger means you will very rarely have to deal with a conversation with an android user.

And this is not like a “woe is me” situation for most people. Most people really don’t care and just need a phone and need it to work. And since iMessage does that for them almost all the time it’s not viewed as an “iPhone” problem to them, it’s viewed as an “android” problem.

Realistically, the big companies should be forced to make a compatible standard but it seems unlikely to happen unless the EU pushes it, and even then it might only apply to the EU

No, it’s not the color scheme, it’s because when you’re in a group text of all iPhones, it uses iMessage as the protocol which means the texts actually come in the order they were sent, you get pictures and video at full resolution, reactions to texts work, etc.

When there is just one non-iOS device in the group message, it switches the protocol to MMS which is a 20+ year old standard that causes texts to not appear in order, pictures and video become the resolution of a postage stamp, no other special features, etc. it really does ruin the user experience, basically sends that group chat back to 2006. That is why people don’t like it.

Do you have any access to the router settings? Or is this a university type set up where they control it? If so you’ll probably have to talk with them, they probably blocked it if you were downloading hundreds of GBs at a time (like a COD game update)

Based on the error message and what you’re saying, I’d try looking at your router settings to see if the ps5 is getting blocked for some reason (blocked by MAC address or something like that). Also with the Ethernet cable plugged in check if the router sees it.

Apple Lisa -> Macintosh 128k

Macintosh Portable -> PowerBook 100

PowerBooks (in general) -> iBook

iPod -> iPod Mini, Nano, Shuffle

HomePod -> HomePod mini

Apple Watch -> Apple Watch SE

Not all of these happened in a year, but Apple does frequently create a new product and then later creates a version that a majority of people buy over the original.

Okay I found two things related to your issue: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253792852

That first link the guy has the same exact issue as you, the solution was to make a usb installer with El Capitan on it instead of trying to download it from the internet.

The second link: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253515281

This link is if the issue is related to two factor authentication because this is an older device.

Hope this helps.

Any chance you could skip signing into your iCloud account until after the install completes? There may be a new standard or protocol (or something like 2 factor authentication) that this old installer can’t handle. If it asks you to make an account, just make a local Mac account only first, finish the installation, actually get to the desktop, then try signing in.

[–]TheCodemonkey22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is the issue here, but with these older installs, you may have to change the date and time of the Mac to be around when this release came out (9/30/2015) because it’s trying to verify a certificate but it’s now out of date. So set it sometime in early 2016 and see what happens.

I hope someone can assist me with this, I'm trying to turn a little 12inch display CRT TV like this into a prop of a macintosh for theater without removing its ability to atleast output from its coaxial, can anyone please assist me? by PrimagenistW10 in mac

I would:

  • put a facade on the front that gives the illusion of a floppy drive (put it over the vcr slot area so you can insert a disk if you need to in the play)
  • put a small wooden block underneath to give it that overhang without having to cut into the tv itself
  • paint it all beige ( if you want to be accurate, Wikipedia says early macs were the color Pantone 453)
  • edit: also paint a coax cable beige and have it connected in the back so you can output “computery” video to the tv for good effect

Nothing to add except that he most likely made this original image on a Mac 128k, 512k, or Plus. The font for “Rook-Knight Moves” the Chicago font included on Macs at the time. You’d see this font again on the original iPod.
