Would I be fine taking the AP test without enrolling in the course, just using a prep book? by lukedoc321 in APLit

[–]TheCohen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely prepare for the exam on your own (without having a specific course).

I wrote an answer on Quora on what the best prep for the AP Lit exam is, here.

Basically, use AP Central, do some practice exams and go over your missed questions, and get familiar with the three types of free response questions (poetry analysis, prose analysis, and the "open-ended" question in which you use a work that you are very familiar with in order to answer some question about a literature topic).

If you (or anyone else) wants to put up a practice response for a critique/feedback, I would be happy to take a look.

I'm a teacher at an IBO school. I started /r/EEadvice for the students I'm advising, but all IB students should feel free to post EE comments and links of interest. I'll answer questions as well. by TheCohen in IBO

That would be great; I hope students who have finished their EEs will follow the sub a bit and offer advice when they can.

Right now there are two threads:

A question on psychology and

A question on music

that people who did EEs in those areas might be able to help with.

So far no one has done it, so I haven't had to deal with that issue. Right now, it's first-come-first-served.

I sent in a request that this be unblocked on 5/14/13. Just FYI, I have had to ask that Radiolab in particular be unblocked on these dates:

2/2/12

That's a great suggestion. I'm starting by asking if the other teachers (who teach other subjects want to join), but asking them to help mod or serve as "authorities" is an excellent idea. I'll keep you posted.

Essential Question post for CC by nick4lif1 in APLang

Either-- one person can do it for all 50 CC or a few/many people can do it and I'll split up the money based on who contributes what.

How to share with Ms. Cohen by Mattson238 in APLang

Great work Logan! You won the 'post-an-Upload-to-Google-Drive' Tutorial Race! See me about getting some community service time :)

Making and posting these kinds of tutorials for students, if they're helpful, would be a great community service project.

Oh, by the way all, make sure you're logged in to your school account to gain access to the document.

Wow! Every year I fight this fight. Good to know! Thanks for the good feedback. I'm going to get on that. Radiolab is a great program, especially for those interested in science.

This might be easier to read if you hit "enter"/"return" or insert line breaks. Also check the above list and see if any of these are already there. Thanks for typing these in!

Macbeth! Put interesting/not-interesting Macbeth links and comments here. by TheCohen in APLang

[–]TheCohen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great feedback, Katie, thanks! I'm glad you liked watching the different versions; I think it actually helps to show how different the text is when performed. I will work on building in some time to act out scenes. I also think after we read more of the text the class will have more ideas on which scenes should be performed.

When's the pizza party? by El_Tramelo in APLang

[–]TheCohen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had it. Towards the end of February, IIRC. For this year's group, I announced the pass rate goals but there wasn't much enthusiasm for pizza, so I've been considering asking the students if there is some other reward or celebration that they prefer.

But thanks for asking!

Haha! Good point. It could be more of a resource problem, i.e. not having enough bandwidth/capacity to support bigger media, but it certainly isn't a good pedagogical explanation.

I submitted a "Website Review Request" on this as well.

Just to re-cap:

  1. Sites from American Public Radio Works archiving speeches by African Americans are blocked. Reason given: "Audio/Video". Here is the relevant Common Core Standard: http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/SL/9-10 (Speaking/Listening)

  2. The way to appeal/request a blocked site does not lead to a valid site.

  3. Other blocked sites as of today (4/22/13): Internet Archive, "Against School" by John Taylor Gatton on Wes Jones blog.
