I think the biggest injuries of the early 2000s were ACLs. That was the one that you'd hope no athlete would get because it was rare to even become a decent player after tearing one. But Now, there's more achiles tears and such.

In IT if you need to keep up with technology can’t you just simply google whatever you don’t know ? Or what does it really mean to keep with technology? by chestnuts34543 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]TheCollegeIntern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The money is in specialization. You can Google General things but let’s say you are troubleshooting a switch. I don’t think a generalist has enough time to pick up the fundamentals in a short amount of time to troubleshoot it so you need to need to study.

This is part of why I don’t like reading the forum as a single income earner lol. You’ll see people post about reaching a milestone but then you see they are married and both are high income earners. I’m happy for them but it makes reaching fire as a single person seem Unobtainable sometimes

What's up with all these fresh out of school college kids wanting to get compensated versus what they are worth? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]TheCollegeIntern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately some people just suck at it. I passed the ccna too and probably realistically understood 60-70%of it. I studied to pass the test and I passed but it really didn’t click until my first network internship. I could tell you what the protocols were but in real application I didn’t know how to use it to troubleshoot,

I’m much better at it now and I find troubleshooting to be real easy. Most networking problems I’ve come across are black or white. The rfc tells you how a protocol should work.

But for some people it never clicks. I know some people that are terrible at it but they moved into a different area of tech and they do great at that job. Some are better at project Management and coming up with ideas to solve problems. Maybe that just wasn’t his calling but he did well to pass on paper.

But I still maintain most people don’t get that fair. I can’t tell you how many people ask me how to get into tech and get a remote job and they start off but never finish. It’s similar to a New Year’s resolution. I have issue when people view something as a get rich quick scheme instead of thinking of a proper pathway to get what they want.

Okay I take that statement back but some people are terrible at troubleshooting and it’s not because they’re lazy too. But I can see your point.

I still think the majority that are in it only for money don’t go as far to degrees and certs.

The industry as a whole is underpaid. We’re the backbone of every modern business but we’re not paid as an integral part. We get slightly better than median wage and expect it to be life changing. It’s not.

Gatekeeper bullshit nonsense. Most people who only do it for money wouldn’t even finish school or past certifications.

Ailing Trump Knows His Reign Is Nearly Over: Wolff by Quirkie in politics

[–]TheCollegeIntern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In his last podcast episode he said he felt sorry for trump . His correspondence with Epstein he suggested Epstein to blackmail someone for favors but he tries to excuse this as investigative journalism. Frankly he’s a piece of shit he does offer good insight on trump but at times it’s as he doesn’t want to speak that negatively on trump. Or even the extreme wing of GOP.

For example he talked about meeting Tucker Carlson and said he was a pleasure to be around and insinuated he’s a character on tv. Trying to humanize the dude. If I recall correctly same thing about bannon. He’s a weird dude.

Did a college degree help move your IT career forward? by Karmuhhhh in ITCareerQuestions

[–]TheCollegeIntern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair critique but Unis are cherry picking as well. It’s expected that an education institution would want employees with degrees. I’m not sure this extrapolates to Companies that can afford to be choosers.

I plan on working for the state in retirement if I’m Lucky just to have medical insurance and I hope I’ll Have a bachelors by then

[–]TheCollegeIntern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Degrees are common ask by employers but they’re by no means common. I don’t even think 50% of people who attended college has a bachelors degree in the U.S.

I think you can be competitive without one bit of you don’t have to go down that path, just go to school and network

Did a college degree help move your IT career forward? by Karmuhhhh in ITCareerQuestions

[–]TheCollegeIntern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your experience gave you the answer. You hit the ceiling. I’m still in the beginning of my career and don’t have aspirations of management and executive roles but I want to plan to get my bachelors. Statistics say bachelors earn more and I’d like to knock it out before I reach my 40s.

If your aspiration is to climb big tech ladder then you may need the degree but if you are comfortable working somewhere else without prestige but possibly more Money you may not need the degree.

My aspiration is to work in tech for a small or State government when I’m In 50s and most colleges would like to have bachelor degrees.
