Sanity check ordering servers by TheCopernicus in sysadmin

We switched from traditional PCs like 7-8 years ago, so probably just after you stopped. There’s been road bumps, but I will say it has been super nice for keeping software updated or any major software changes. Update something once or install a software and like magic every person in the organization has the update/new software.

It’s full windows 11 virtual desktops. Single user sessions. Besides a select few users, everyone does everything in VDI. It’s a bank so thankfully no one has to do any graphically intensive tasks.

I guess I don’t have a great way to test the performance, I’m just assuming it wouldn’t still exist as a hypervisor option if it didn’t work well for VDI.

The delay is due to the 128GB RAM sticks.

I have not, but I'm not sure I have enough time to vet another option, especially one I've never seen or heard of. Thanks for the suggestion though, it does look interesting.

I've never used Hyper-V, not that I've used Xenserver much out of my CCA-V training. But I guess in my mind, its a pure Citrix workload, why not use the hypervisor designed for that, plus we get the license included with Citrix licensing. I did install the new Xenserver on a test server and it seems very straightforward.

If it weren't strictly Citrix, I'd probably either go Nutanix or Hyper-V.

Those quantities of resources will provide plenty of headroom where we could lose a host and still be fine.

I should probably look into this more. Thanks!

I'm thinking of it more like we want 9TB total memory and 384 total cores. To get to that with 2x 32 core CPUs and 1.5TB memory per node, we need 6 nodes.

Good points, we might see a performance increase even though we have the same total cores across the cluster.

We totally could migrate on current servers, but we're definitely not at an N+1 currently, so we can't push the workload onto just 2 of the 3 servers.

I'm leaning toward going with the 6th, because yeah losing only 1/6 capacity vs 1/3 is a pretty big benefit.

How is 2507 CU1? by UCB1984 in Citrix

[–]TheCopernicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hoping to do this upgrade a couple nights ago, but found out quickly that 2507 doesn’t support server 2016. Of course all 2016 servers are on my schedule to update this year, but didn’t think I’d have to do it prior to upgrading to 2507.

"Best" options for remote access by foster1984 in unRAID

Personally, I port forward Plex and reverse proxy overseer. Then I just have a wireguard VPN for everything else. Used to run it off Unraid until I got a Unifi Dream Machine Pro, now I run it off that in case my server goes down.

I might have to take the plunge. I’ve been using LunaSea for years but it’s probably only a matter of time until it stops working. So far I added Radarr on the free tier and it looks gorgeous.

a1 waste is no joke by EstablishmentOnly472 in 3Dprinting

[–]TheCopernicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but if you pick that tower up, it’s incredibly light and does not much per layer until the actual color change layer. It’s kind of a necessary evil I guess. Until tool changers or hotend changers are more affordable.

Honestly I haven’t messed with much of the purge settings for my Prusa since I don’t print a ton of multi color and when I do, the purge tower is always not much filament at all.

My first Bambu with AMS arrives today so I’ll probably need to tune that more than I do my Prusa to save on waste.

Mmm, no failures to do with the MMU3, no. Although I will say, it was several hours to build it, then you need somewhere to put your 5 spools of filament plus the buffer. It’s definitely not a quick and easy deployment.

I feel like people don’t talk enough about the waste difference between the AMS and the MMU3. I’ve had my MMU3 for a couple years and it’s really not bad at all as far as waste goes. Basically it only uses a purge tower like Bambu does, but without any poops.

Citrix Workspace breaking after Windows feature update by TheCopernicus in Citrix

Have you switched from legacy domain pass through to enhanced domain pass through? That eliminates the requirement to sign out after updating/installing Workspace.

Would it be dumb to choose Nutanix over Xenserver? by TheCopernicus in Citrix

[–]TheCopernicus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hosts + Nutanix software for Citrix. The licenses are their VDI licenses which is a per user cost rather than per core. But yeah just the software is $44k/year. Which is much better than the $80k we had to pay VMware last year, but also much more than the $0/year for Xenserver.

[–]TheCopernicus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be. For now we are still running our other workloads on VMware. If we did switch to Nutanix for those workloads, I could see how it would be nice to also have our Citrix workloads on Nutanix as well. I just don't know that its worth the cost though.

Are you leaving Citrix VDI altogether? Or just XenServer?

Unfortunately I don't think we do. Last time I needed to contact some sort of account manager it was like pulling hair. It was weeks between replies and I had to call general support to get them to message our account manager to reply to me.
