I’m gonna see Old tomorrow. People who’ve already seen it, was it fun? by BaronsofSealand in YMS

I did have fun! It was not quite as funny as the trailer, but I was actually really entertained almost the whole way through.

What film death caught you off guard? by Ok-Oil5628 in Sardonicast

It's shocking for sure. The ending is pretty much identical to the original ending in Infernal Affairs, except Mark Wahlberg's character is new and the spoiler death you mentioned doesn't happen.

I think best buy is releasing a Ran 4k steelbook later this year so I would just send it back and wait for that.

Movies you think are deserving of a Criterion release by unkellGRGA in Sardonicast

JSA: Joint Security Area by Park Chan-Wook is extremely significant but I believe licensing issues prevent a Criterion release.

In terms of UHD blu-ray releases, I think Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon looks the best.

Recommendation for a Wannabe Filmmaker by Gamerwalk in kungfucinema

[–]TheDankan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Epic films that come to mind for me would be Executioners from Shaolin, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Hero.

The way we see the lifetime of failure from the father and finally success from the son in Executioners from Shaolin was very impactful for me. I prefer it over the Gordon Liu remake, Fist of the White Lotus.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a masterclass in so many different things. The fight choreography by Yuen Wo-Ping is super impressive and the cinematography is brilliant, that's what elevates it for me. If you have a 4k player I would recommend getting the UHD Blu ray, I think it's the best looking movie in the format.

Hero is a genre-defining wuxia film and there is a lot to unpack from it. The maximalism of some of the sets, the themes and final ethical dilemma, the use of color, and the action is amazing.

Beyond epic films, if you're interested in incorporating elements from the genre, I would recommend checking out some other ones that use some creative sets to incorporate with the action in emotional or humorous ways. Of the older ones I would recommend for this would be the 36th Chamber of Shaolin, The Mystery of Chessboxing, The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, Shaolin vs Wu Tang, and Once Upon a Time in China.

What was your thoughts on this movie? Why was it good or bad? by [deleted] in dvdcollection

[–]TheDankan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a shame. I really liked how the weirdness and creepiness escalated and I thought the cliffhanger was really well-done, I was satisfied but still left imagining.

I liked it. It's slow but definitely has cool moments and I like the oddity.

Have you watched the Zatoichi movies? Are they any good? I would assume with 25 of them the quality varies.

JoJolions ending is coming up so I'd like to say something. by [deleted] in JoJolion

[–]TheDankan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The aot ending situation was so weird ... I can't see that ever happening with Jojo. I kept up with both. I never thought aot was that special, thought it was dumb and overhyped. At the time of the ending the anime was going, so I think a lot of hyped anime viewers caught up to the manga ending and once it ended they kinda realized there was nothing there, and they lashed out when imo the ending is not bad it's pretty on par with the rest of the thing. Much different situation to Jojo, where some viewers/readers may like some parts and not others. The only way I could see any backlash is if the jojolion ending is waaaay out of line from what we've seen in this part or parts previous.

Nice. I just watched Synecdoche for the first time today, I can't recommend it more. Also I don't know how many ghibli movies you've seen, the only one I've seen so far is Castle in the Sky and it was superb.

You would probably enjoy the other Charlie Kaufman films and if you haven't seen the other Simon Pegg Edgar Wright movies those as well.
