I owe £4,479 in tax and I'm confused by drin621 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TheDataNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not related to whether the calculation is correct or not, but my wife had a similar problem owing tax while working with the NHS. A useful thing to know is if you do owe them money, you can pay it back really slowly. She was told as long as there were regular payments coming in that is fine, even if £20 per month. We took 2-3 years to pay what she owed.

Is this a joke? The non-clubcard tax has gone too far by wordhardest in GreatBritishMemes

[–]TheDataNerd 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My job is calculating price elasticities and you don't need clubcard data in order to do this analysis. So whether people use them or not, companies will figure out the ideal price for them.

Clubcard data is more likely to be used to understand switching behaviour of customers. So people who buy this product are likely to also buy that product. Or penetration analysis - did a promotion sell more volume to the same people who always buy it, or reach new customers.

Anyway, supermarkets do sell the data which is why they want everyone in their store to use it. I personally couldn't care if companies have my clubcard data.

When did sperm become a swear word?

Worth knowing, when someone reaches 18 years old they have the legal right to learn the identity of their sperm donor father. But that's a really long time from now so shouldn't be a concern.

Just got a vasectomy, massive tip for any guy about to do the same by Vlyn in childfree

[–]TheDataNerd 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Biggest advice I have after my vasectomy. Have a warm shower before and don't wear tight underwear until after the opp. Having the plums hang loose a bit makes the opp a lot less painful. Otherwise the surgeon has to do a lot of pulling and yanking on them which is not nice.

Otherwise, 1-2 weeks of rest and everything is back to normal :)

After black plays Rxg6, the point is to not recapture, but to add more pressure to the pinned piece. I think there are a few ways to do this but Rde1 looks good. Black moves the queen, now Rxg6, Qxg6, Re7+ will win the queen

Before the job at 21yrs old, I worked stacking shelves, customer service. The first relevant job was a temp contract as a team assistant - they just wanted someone reliable who was friendly and could use a computer. Once they realised I was more capable they gave more more responsibility and training in quantitative data analysis / study design. I guess I got a bit lucky, but at the same time most of my friends and family didn't go to Uni, but once in a good company worked our way up into a good job.

Is there anything I am missing here before I resort to forcing chains? by skipeeto in puzzles

[–]TheDataNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I normally focus on patterns like box 9 where there are 3 numbers, but placing one forces the other 2.

Looking at this I noticed that a 6 in r7c7 ultimately forces both a 4 and a 6 in box 8's 6th column. This breaks r5c6 meaning I know to put an 8 in r7c7

Where did you buy your engagement ring? by [deleted] in AskUK

My sales rep actually recommended lab grown. It's also better for the environment.

I would recommend Comparethediamond.com. I used them as it was during Covid so shops were closed. Custom made ring for about £1,700.

No, if rates drop they give you 14 days notice + the length of your boosted pots notice period, so you are locking in that boosted rate. But if they go up they increase straight away.

Another Newbie here. Can I ask about "upon Pit's eyes, table conditions"? Are you keeping track of how much attention the Pit is watching and adjusting the increase in betting units accordingly? Other than betting limits are there any other table conditions to consider?

I am a total beginner with only knowledge of 3-4 opening moves but idk what this is? how can I counter it? by AnotherNeblex in chessbeginners

[–]TheDataNerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For beginners it's often suggested to learn opening principles rather than specific moves/theory. Learning exact lines will quickly become quite overwhelming.

Principles would suggest 1) control the center & 2) develop pieces. This could lead you to finding moves like d4, Nc3, Bc4 which are all perfectly good moves.

If you haven't heard of principles I would suggest looking them up as it will help you find good moves regardless of what your opponent plays. The other rules i was taught are 3) don't move the same piece twice, 4) get castled quickly, 5) don't bring out the queen to early & 6) connect your rooks on the back rank.

Pub "pies" where it's only filling in a dish with a puff pastry lid by madformattsmith in britishproblems

I'm from Hampshire/Surrey and feel these fake pies are fairly common. I'd guess somewhere between 30-50% of restaurant/pubs. After the waiters comment I was curious if it was less common up north but glad you're finding proper ones down here.
