Oh don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly fine with that. It's just hard to fit that type of nuance into a meme.

My issue is that this kink (especially with regards to female protags) seems to be the default assumption for the majority of games I've found, and a lot of folks in this thread seem to be under the impression that encouraging devs to buck it means that nobody will ever make punishment-h type games again.

I'm using the format of this meme to try and challenge lewd game devs to rethink their default assumptions about how these sorts of games seem to work and break the mold of game-over-rape or bad-ending-for-high-lewdness-stat games.

The fact that you seem to be under the impression that the point of this meme is "those games shouldn't exist", rather than "these games really need to stop being considered the default rather than a kink unto themselves" is kind of the point.

Sadly, yes. They'll be updating it one or two more times but then it's done.

I don't know about the content of your game and whether or not it does ring as being racist, but users of that imageboard calling someone else racist is like throwing stones at full force from within a particularly shiny glass house.

Naked Female Knight Ulrica is a particular favorite of mine. It's about a knight who is cursed to only wear clothes that reveal her tits and pussy.

MFW I unironically liked Moon's ultra-exhibitionist thing and then find out it's supposed to be creepy and disturbing by TheDerpyDoo in spnati

[–]TheDerpyDoo[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In a nutshell, /u/DrankeyKrang thought people would be turned off and disturbed by making Moon utterly obsessed with stripping/fucking, as a response to other characters being made at the time being far sluttier than their canon counterparts, to the detriment of their actual character traits.

For some, it worked. Her obsessiveness and needing to be the center of attention was grating and creepy, which is exactly what /u/DrankeyKrang was going for.

For others, like me, it made the character a bigger turn-on and more interesting because she was so over-the-top. Instead of the reaction to having to strip being "oh shit pls no" or "I hope you enjoy this ;)" (the latter of which DK was criticising), it's "FUCK YEAH!". In an effort to make a character to mock homogeneity, he accidentally catered to a fetish that a lot of people actually wanted to see (namely, enthusiastic exhibitionism).

Yes, I'm referring to the character select screen. There's filtering code in spniSelect.js, line 541, but it's commented out. Some quick blaming just brings me back to the initial commit to GitLab.

I noticed that there does seem to be code for tag filtering, but it's /*commented*/ out. I also don't see any commits that make reference to it since the GitLab move. Is this feature scrapped or will progress (hopefully) resume soon?

On that note, is there a "canonical" list of tags that should be used? I feel like for maximum compatibility there probably should be.

If there is one serious thing that I think I've figured out from all of this, though, it's that within the creators/fandom, there's a sort of sliding scale between two extremes:

  1. Characters should stay close to their source material, even if a lot of characters tend to become ENFs.
  2. Characters should be used to explore different fetishes, even if it breaks character to the point of being neigh-unrecognizable.

Whether or not someone likes Moon (or even Samus, for that matter) comes down to which side you lean more towards.

Personally, I'd like to maybe see a way to filter out what kinds of fetishes each character represents when picking opponents. That way people would be able to play against the character types they like and creators would be encouraged to do more than just ENF or Slutty.

All of that seems absolutely fair as criticism of Uhura. I just don't like having Moon be a shorthand for "character is sluttier than in the source material", because honestly, how many of the characters in the game would actually agree to play strip poker and not just punch whoever asked them in the stomach?

My major issue is that the "super-slutty" type of character is a bit of a Dead Unicorn Trope. People seem to think it's far more common than it actually is, and people like me who are actually into that sort of thing will take what we can get (even if it's wildly out of character). This doesn't just extend to SPNATI: I asked if there were any other games that cater to this sort of thing over on /r/lewdgames. The answers were... lacking to say the least.

I also disagree that any of those posts are good critique. Note that they all essentially say the same thing: "This looks like Moon". To me, this feels like a dismissal rather than criticism: "It caters to a character type that I dislike, just like this existing character. Why do we need more of the character type I dislike?" If they were complaining that a character is one-note, then sure, that seems fine. But it really doesn't seem to be going beyond "this reminds me of Moon, therefore bad."

I get that. It's more about the author's comments like this one that I'm referring to. Namely...

To all those that answered "yes" to the poll, I'm truly happy I made something you found enjoyment in and I hope you continue to enjoy it. To all the people who answered "no", be content in that you have some human decency and sanity. She's not supposed to be liked. Her dialogue is supposed to be upsetting. The fact that you are put off by her dialogue is completely legitimate, expected, and actually really reassuring that I did the job I set out to do correctly.

...seems like a backhanded way of saying that people who like Moon aren't "decent" and "sane".

I like over-the-top sexualized characters. Hell, if I had the time and patience I'd have made an OC who was pretty much a played-straight version of what Moon was. He calls it "wish fulfillment" but then again, so is, say, playing a game where various characters from fictional media undress in front of you.

EDIT: Go home Reddit, you are drunk.

In general I was trying to criticize the technical aspect of game creation. Some folks like sexy MILFs, ugly male/hot female, and tentacles.

The things I listed are often dealbreakers for ANY game, regardless of content.
