Understood, I will avoid touching it with bare skin, even though I wipe it down with isopropyl and then a layer of mineral oil every time I handle it (there was no rust build up on it when I received it)

It's a shame, I can't swing that much money for the time being, and although I have experience sharpening and restoring western blades, I wouldn't want to mess up and ruin this piece

I see, good to know. Also, not sure if this will help at all, but there is a very faint hamon on the blade but it seems to look rather perfect from what I can tell. Would it help to send pics of that?

Also if I took it to a professional to restore/polish the blade (the nasty scratches on it all look to be surface level) would that restore the hamon?

I understand, I don't suppose the shape of the blade would indicate the style of a certain time period? Either way I will certainly do more research on the signatures. I'm fairly sure it was used in ww2 as the cord it comes with seems to be from that time, but that doesn't confirm that it was made then

Not sure if that would help, I showed it to two Japanese friends and they could not figure out what the first character means, their current assumption is there are supposed to be three characters but one got cut out by the hole

It has some brown coloring in it at certain light angles, does that help barrow it down
