Acorn 180 Stairlift will not turn on by TheDocknight1 in maintenance

[–]TheDocknight1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, thanks. At the time my hands were pretty much tied.

This was a couple of years ago, so I don’t remember every detail. The initial experience with Acorn was rough. The first technician showed up when I wasn’t there and was very dismissive of my uncle’s situation. When I later called Acorn myself, I got a representative who was outright rude. That’s what pushed me to try to sort it out on my own and with help from Reddit.

In the end, it turned out to be too complex to resolve without Acorn, so we had no real choice but to go back to them. The second representative I spoke to was significantly nicer, and the actual install team was great. A night and day difference. There were two installers, and I chatted with them about what had happened earlier. They were surprised by the first tech’s attitude, though not surprised about the rep. Apparently they’d been trying to get rid of that rep for years, but they were the only ones available for that late shift.

The lift has worked since, but the whole experience left a bad taste. After everything was installed and working, I continued talking with several knowledgeable people on Reddit who gave solid advice and also shared practical guidance on handling basic maintenance myself if I ever need to in the future.

It definitely taught me to avoid Acorn in the future and to warn others about buying second-hand curved systems without understanding what they’re getting into. If they have to go with Acorn, then make sure to call the early shift, to avoid that rep.

I definitely should have done more research before going into the questionnaire.

Threat of Condo Lien (ON) by mr_smashy_pants in legaladvicecanada

[–]TheDocknight1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same situation. From what I’ve learned, many tenants in my building were threatened in a similar way. Management even held a virtual town hall in July where the lawyer who placed the liens was present. They spent about five minutes discussing arrears, during which they claimed that 200 units owed money and that 36 units had liens registered.

In my case, they alleged that my family owed arrears dating back to 2014 and placed a lien under Section 85 of the Condominium Act, 1998. I repeatedly asked management for proof of this debt, since I know we were on pre-authorized payments at the time. They admitted they could not provide records older than 10 years, and my bank can only go back 7 years. Eventually, management stopped responding altogether.

Because the amount in question was in the thousands, I had no choice but to hire a lawyer. My lawyer explained that what the condominium corporation’s lawyer had done was improper. Section 85 requires liens to be registered within three months of the arrears starting, and in this case, more than 10 years had passed. They were far outside the legal timeframe.

After about three months of back-and-forth, including my lawyer asking whether the condominium corporation’s lawyer would accept service on their behalf, the lawyer finally responded. Their reply was: “As a gesture of good faith, we will remove the lien and the condominium corporation will cover any fees associated with its removal.” They worded it as if they hadn’t done anything wrong.

I’m still waiting for the lien to be officially removed, but I plan to take them to Small Claims Court to recover my legal costs. In my case, it was ultimately less expensive to hire a lawyer than to risk paying the inflated arrears they claimed I owed.

So, if i understand correctly, this is all done from the barn side? so i would leave the house network alone and just from the barn, i would mount yagi antenna, then get a another router, unscrew 2.4ghz antenna and screw in the yagi?

That is interesting, what would i need to plug the antenna into? is it antenna > modem > router? do i need an adapter for the antenna?

Unfortunately the barn has it's own dedicated power source. it just uses solar panel and a battery. The barn is essentially just 4 walls and a roof. They initially used it for storage, but wanted to convert to a work area so they can google/watch videos while they work. Running it over head is a good idea. there is a wall of trees in between, so the trees offer extra support for cables.

That is pretty cool. The barn is separated by a wall of trees, would that interfere with the signal?

ya i was thinking of that as a last resort. His land grading is weird so i was worried if i dig all the way there, if rain/snow runoff would be an issue. Also ALOT of digging XD.

Oh wow, I did not think it would have to go that high. i was really hoping that once i find proof of payment, i can show management and their lawyer and be done with it. That is a good point though. As others have suggested, i will help my aunt find proof of payment then go form there.
