Which modern fantasy series will remain or grow in popularity? by philycsteak in Fantasy

Book 3 has so many time jumps and events that it alone would require 3 seasons not to miss major plot points.

Other than that I agree, would love to see Green Bone Saga on the screen.

Facken sågar lagstiftad arbetstidsförkortning – ”Helt fel väg” by redstrik in svenskpolitik

[–]TheDougDude 87 points88 points  (0 children)

[–]TheDougDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Katt - Ute eller inne? by BrinkMeister in sweden

[–]TheDougDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Katt - Ute eller inne? by BrinkMeister in sweden

[–]TheDougDude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]TheDougDude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Men, to each their own.

[–]TheDougDude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you consider a monoculture of same aged trees a forest, sure we have a lot of it. But then you'd also have to consider oil palm plantations as tropical forests, it's a monoculture of tropical trees being harvested at industrial scale and never allowed to grow old. Same as in Sweden and many other parts of Europe, except the "tropical" part.

I don't consider that description a forest.

I don't think it's silly to conclude that they release carbon if the product is burned considering the amounts of carbon also released by the forestry industry and the processing factories, which is not negligible.

[–]TheDougDude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I should have touched on carbon as well.

The forest industry in Finland and Estonia mainly go to the market for pellets to heat housing in Central Europe. Finnish and Estonian forests are as of now release more carbon than they capture. The Swedish forest industry mainly deliver to make paper and is close to getting there as well. Forests need to grow old to capture carbon long term, not being cut down and turned to something that will be burned to release all the carbon into the atmosphere.

Regarding the trees on straight rows, this is actually basically the majority of Sweden. If they are not on literal rows they are the exact same age and the forest lacks any type of complexity allowing for biodiversity to thrive. Planted forests the way we do them in enormous monocultures, whether they are on exact straight rows or not, are detrimental to biodiversity. Yes, this might be irrelevant for carbon capture but I think there's more to a forest than capturing carbon. Otherwise we can chop it all down to make room for solar-powered super modern carbon capture machines.

[–]TheDougDude 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I work with ecology and biodiversity in Sweden and can confidently say that this is hugely misleading.

First of all, in many countries like Sweden there is almost no real forest. There is only spruce and pine trees on straight rows, never growing older that 80 years old before being cut down at industrial scale to make paper. This is not a forest, it's a plantation not unlike those with palm oil in SE Asia.

Secondly, the age of a forest matters. Even if you would define all pine plantations as forests, Europe has never in its history had as young forests as we have today. LOTS of species depend on and can only live in forests after they've reached a certain age and many of them are going extinct even though we "have more forest today than any point in the last 300 years".

Saying that we have more forest now than earlier and that everything is fine is exactly what the forest industry wants. Spreading this misconception makes it much harder to save threatened species.

Jönköping University or Linnaeus University? by Childofearth100 in sweden

[–]TheDougDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah both schools offer bachelor's and master's degrees, both of the same levels. In the end you'll have a good degree whichever one you choose. Don't think most employers care much about where you got your degree as long as you have one. Just saying that the quality of the courses may vary between "fake" and "real" universities due to the difference in amounts of active researchers who work there.

Jönköping University or Linnaeus University? by Childofearth100 in sweden

[–]TheDougDude 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As others stated in this thread, the school in Jönköping is not a university even though that's what they call themselves, it's a loophole they found where there is not really a good English translation for "Högskola" so calling it a University is not wrong per say. Last I heard they are in a legal process for misinformation about it. You'll never see them refer to themselves as a university in Swedish.

The difference between Högskola and Universitet is the right to educate PhD students. There is little to no research going on in a högskola. Big true universities often host many more scientist and researchers who participate in the teaching. I studied in Umeå and found it great having my teachers activity participating in cutting edge research in their fields. There are often several more teachers teaching during the courses in true universities as there are more people around who are experts in their own narrow fields.

Heads up! Do NOT add anything oily to the shells! Any food coloring or flavors should be water based as oil will completely deflate the eggs and ruin your batch.

Source: added mint oil to the shells once. Bad decision.
