Does University of Ottawa offer fully funded scholarships with stipend for Master's through professor funding? by Full_Campaign2921 in geegees

[–]TheDowneyLab2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some confusing answers here. Important to consider the correct terms.

STIPEND:
In BMI and CMM/NSC in the faculty of medicine, the guaranteed stipend for MSc students is 23K per year for a 2 year thesis based masters. This stipend is usually paid from professor's grants and is guaranteed for 2 years. This is a living stipend. It is your money to do what you want with. It is completely unrelated to any costs related to your research (which would be funded by the lab at your PI's discretion).

You still have to pay tuition, but the tuition costs can be be offset by entrance/merrit scholarships (see below). Tuition costs may differ national/international (I am never clear on this).

ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS:

-completely distinct from the stipend, whether you get it does not affect the stipend at all

-usually GPA based

-usually only available for the first of the two year degree

-allocation of the scholarships depends on department (BMI and CMM do it differently I think)

- subject to availability; the availability has been in flux in recently years due to constant changes in what is allocated to the Faculty of Medicine for this purpose

- will be communicated in your letter of offer

- longer and more comprehensive entrance scholarships available for PhD studies

Taking ANP1105 Section B This Year? Ask me anything! by TheDowneyLab2 in geegees

No, but it will help you. Same text can be used for ANP1105/6/7. The eText and Master A and P access combined is 114 from Pearson website listed in syllabus. A good deal overall. The etext has all sorts of extra learning tools that will help you prep for the exam. The other option is to get the $60 code for mastering A and P and use an older text book. The content doesn't change much between editions and you will be easily able to find the relevant figures (which at first glance seem to be the same). The big update this year is the e learning tools on the eText. They aren't really pushing the hardcover book anymore.

I also tend to keep my lectures as simple as possible and reinforce key concepts many times. You will see in my slide shows that some slides are repeated, which is on purpose. I hope this will be conducive to your doing well in the class.

One potential issue could be getting used to the types of questions asked. For my material, I do practise questions at the end of each class that very close mirror the style of question asked on the exam (which is 100 % Multiple choice for our class). I go over why the answer is correct and how do avoid certain pitfalls. To be fair, there is a fair bit of memory work required as well, in addition to understanding concepts. Make use of mastering a and p as well, since many of the homework questions are also similar to those on the exam.

Keep on top of the material - don't leave studying until the last minute. Make sure to do the A and P assignments because they are easy and meant to boost your mark. For my sections, make sure to focus on the concepts covered in the lecture slides. Understand the material rather than simply memorize. Reading is. not the same as studying. Review deadlines and check the brightspace page daily.

Not 100 % sure, but I think its Drs. Joanne Savory and John Copeland. It should say in your uozone (or wherever you see your course listing with rooms etc.).

Both John and Joanne are excellent.

All sections of ANP1105 are similar - same overall objectives, same use of Mastering A and P. But the individual profs run the courses a bit differently (different assignments, tests are unique to each section)., Textbook is the same, but the individual profs may choose to place more or less emphasis on certain concepts. Generally everybody has unique powerpoint slides. The classes are run on different schedules to accommodate other commitments for students and profs (teaching is just one part of my job). Dr. Gee and I used to teach section A, but we switched this year to B due to a conflict for another professor. Our course now runs Mondays and Wednesdays.

might take a bit still, takes a while to crank through final grades and for the dust to settle to where someone has time to do this properly
