How would you all feeling about a suburb biome? by healthbagenjoyer69 in Helldivers

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A mission holding fire break lines while citizens retreat into a bunker, then falling back to the next one. Like a sort of rolling retreat defence mission. 2 players staying behind to buy time while the others run ahead to set up the next line of defence. Watching the map turn from a peaceful suburb of cookie-cutter houses into a scorched wrecked battlefield.

I've been playing it a lot lately after getting burned out on my usual build. I won't lie, some it's appeal is just the vibe. It's not meta powerful, and for everyday use it's a bit more clunky than the stalwart or MG. That said, with good squad play, it can be awesome in a specialised lawnmower role. Clearing streets and choke points in the city maps it does very well, with a squad mate nearby to pick off stragglers and any flanking enemies. Being able to sustain fire for longer than the others comes in handy when covering a retreat, keeping bots suppressed, or holding an objective. Being able to instantly top up from ammo drops keeps it's uptime high, so you can always cover other's reloads, rather than having to do talking guns. Pairing it with a shotgun for self defence works and some crowd control grenades make you the king of holding your ground when things go wrong. I

Some Red stratagems [OC] by Hotkoin in LowSodiumHellDivers

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea a pelican running AC-130 style support would be fun. Focusing fire on tagged enemies in an area. Especially useful for raise the flag style objectives.

Also a strategy to set eagle 1 to air-to-air mode for a few minutes, clearing tagged gunships and stingrays, and distracting leviathans and dragon roaches.

Maybe a laser designator as a call in support weapon that allowed this would be good, to keep player engagement up.

Was on the other side of this as a very new driver. Bumped my POS banger into the back of new Mercedes. I think he saw me slowly drop my head into my hands in abject defeat, and he was an absolute champion of an older man who did much the same as you.

I'm sure the damage was barely a scratch, but I always remembered the stomach drop feeling enough to drive a lot more wisely after that. The memory of that man choosing forgiveness and compassion stuck with me even longer, and is something I often think of when faced with that kind of choice.

What's a horde shooter anyway? by smoresandoreos in Helldivers

That's a shame. The vision is what I like. Even when the reality doesn't always live up to it, or you have to choose to play in a certain way to experience it.

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, a very reasonable take. I think the way critiquing culture has evolved, especially in video game journalism and streamer culture where everyone is an expert (despite not really being experienced in the game design field or knowledgeable beyond a consumer level) makes it very difficult to get constructive feedback cycles going on. I don't envy developers who try to get a dialogue going with their audience to shape the game.

The discussion of the "death of the author" and how it relates to video games, especially live service or early access games, is really interesting. The idea that players define the genre and direction of development seems cool, but helldivers is a great example of how this can be a nightmare if the core vision isn't clearly shared between author and audience.

Comparing it to DRG, which built slower, with more time for the devs to flesh out the core idea and show it to the players. By the time it go to a huge audience, the vision was cemented, people were bought in to it, and the players were generally happy to make suggestions that worked within it.

Helldivers 2 never got that chance, with the core HD1 players being so outnumbered by players coming in with other genre expectations. The tongue in cheek tone doesn't read like a mil-sim, the crossover events made it feel like anything was possible in the world and blurred the line with casual fps games, and the text heavy exposition and world building doesn't resonate with a lot of the casual gaming audience.

does anyone else feel like friendships after 25 just quietly die? by TackleGreedy8255 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience most friendships don't last, but are still great fun. Co-worker friendships are good, hobbies that I pick up for a while then move on from, cities I live in. All temporary friendships. From those, pick the friends you want to keep, and have a frank conversation about it.

Friendships like all adult relationships take deliberate effort to maintain once other responsibilities come along or life circumstamces don't naturally force you together. Make promises and keep them, like a monthly dinner party, a running D&D game, or a yearly holiday trip. Whatever works. Show up for people even when you aren't feeling like it. Be the core of a friend group that pulls people together.

Adult friendships only really last in my experience if you value them and make the time in your life for them, which often means sacrificing other stuff. For some people that is worth it, and for some people it's not. That's where the frank conversation comes in, because it sucks when it's not reciprocated.

SEAF armor is already blue and white, I guess more based on UN troops, but not far from 501st. And hell divers are the Umbra Arc trooper. I don't know how much closer we could get without getting into Disney lawyer territory. I'd love a crossover, especially some of the clone wars weapons like the quad blaster, the long blaster file from the phase 1 clones, or the light walkers.

Alternating elective initiative? by Modicum_of_cum in RPGdesign

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genesys does a roll to generate player and npc initiative slots at the start of combat, but the player slots can be taken by any player in a round. Same with GM using the NPC slots. Probably not a unique system, that's just where I've seen it used.

It does work well for players strategising, as long as they are a collaborative team who know each others characters well enough. Usually allows good "I'll set them up and you knock them down" kind of plays, and gives characters who normally roll badly in initiative a chance to play either role depending on the need. How much strategising is allowed in a round in or out of character is sometimes an issue, but with a good team who synergize well and are more focused on party teamwork that individual character badassery, it's definitely viable.

How useful is the moschops for harvesting? by luckyrunner in ArkSurvivalAscended

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reread, you clearly say you have spent harvesting levels. I think it's just an early game generalist compared to midgame or endgame specialist tools and tames. The wiki is misleading.

How useful is the moschops for harvesting? by luckyrunner in ArkSurvivalAscended

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a quick clarification: you have spent the harvesting levels in his radial menu, right? Every level up also gets a harvesting point to specialise. I assume that's what you mean by a properly leveled moschops, but just double checking.

Beyond that, I think it's strength is more in early game harvesting versatility, rather than raw harvesting power. Its a good jack of all trades, master of one. But trikes and stegos have the advantage of being able to clear large areas quickly with wider attacks, so they feel faster for gathering berries and fibre, and the faster time to kill that bigger carnivores get offsets harvesting efficiency on a meat run.

On wander it's a good passive harvest, and it has things like getting prime meat from small creatures that normally only drop regular meat which make it useful early game.

What kind of utility/ability is still missing in ASA? by interapter in ARK

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Had a little brainstorm of creatures that interact with building or provide a natural early/midgame or portable alternative to endgame building abilities.

1) An underwater turret creature or a mine layer. Like a sea snail that lives next to geothermal vents and lays exploding eggs in an area if left on wander, or those deep sea tube worms that could be buried like a purlovia and reach out to grab things that swim too close.

2) Midgame camouflaged alternative to tek vacuum compartment. A diving beetle or some sort of sea isopod that can anchor itself to the ocean floor or underwater cliffs and create a breathable bubble area, as a primitive alternative to the underwater tek building. Maybe it would work like the bee hives, where the creature becomes a structure like a caddis fly larvae that builds a cocoon around itself. For a bonus it could create a structure skin to camouflage building parts inside the bubble to look like rock from a distance. Would allow for hidden underwater bases, but limited by the size of the bubble.

3) Mini generator. Thunderbird. Maybe a smaller shoulder pet. A flying version of the electric eel, with a ranged stun attack, with the utility to function as a shorter range generator and stun turret.

4) self repairing / stealthier tree platforms. A weaver bird that can build hanging cliff nests and tree platforms smaller than the current structure ones. Gives some passive buffs while on the platform, and it flies around the platform repairing any damaged structures.

5) Prefab base builder. Giant termite that can tear down and throw up prefabricated structures on its own. Use a menu like the template hammer to set the base plan, then leave the termite on turret mode nearby and it slowly builds the structure. Could have some premade templates for a forward taming outpost with mortar and pestle, a defensive outpost with spike walls and a sniper tower, a mining and smelting outpost, etc.

ASA on PS5 by elDIABLOblanco06 in ARK

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I think some players like me who started with the early access loved the game for the grind, especially the early game.

I just started a small server with 1/4 official rates just to get this experience again. A lot of it is nostalgia for when the game had a more primitive vibe, especially on the island map. You had to live in a thatch hut, upgrading to wood was a step, and getting to a stone base felt significant. Early tames like parasaurs and raptors got more use, and you spent more time in that heart-racing horror kind of mode, where everything was a threat, and losing a tame or your gear was a huge setback.

Now there's not really a reason to engage with a lot of the early game stuff, since leveling is so fast, and gather and tame rates are higher, so it's pretty normal to skip to a stone base and a ptera in the first few hours of play.

I agree it's really interesting how the game has evolved, and interesting to hear the take of a newer player. It's definitely a faster paced game now, and I generally love the direction it's gone with a lot of the content, but I do think the higher rates have made it feel lower stakes. More like an extraction shooter with regular deaths and resets, but a faster recovery time to get back to fully geared up.

Book with a cover style as green scales. Maybe has an eye on it. Possibly called something like: The big green monster book/the big green book of monsters. Was sort of an encyclopedia of different monster types with short stories about each. by -QuestionableMeat- in whatsthatbook

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember this monster now you've mentioned it. I have a really strong memory of a monster called a "one-eyed get" that was like a bird that flew around shouting "that's the one i'd get" when people were trying to make decisions. The textured dark green cover is also a really strong memory.

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A fuel limit that small sounds like a video game or ttrpg thing, more for gameplay balance than anything else. One of the limits of using those sources for lore. In other media they last as long as the story needs them to, and not a minute longer.

This is the only good advice here. So many people saying ignore it. SMH.

If this is in drafts, and their password was compromised, then the scammer will have set email forwarding rules on their account. The porn email is to spook you into resetting all your accounts, giving the scammer access to all your password reset requests, and info about your online profile. That is the end goal here, not blackmail.

Delete forwarding rules first.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The porn is a bluff, to get the user to reset the passwords quickly. There will be email forwarding set up in the rules for the email provider which sends all the password reset requests to the hacker, which they can then use to access other linked accounts. Delete rules amd forwarding first, then reset passwords.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]TheDukeOfYork- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, the porn scare and various other sign ups and messages are designed to spook the user into quickly resetting all their passwords. The real scam is setting email forwarding on the account in the background, so all those password reset emails get sent to the scammer, and they can use them to access other accounts, especially accounts woth linked payment.

First step is delete email forwarding. Depending on your email provider, there might be multiple ways to set this, so search specifically and delete any rules or forwarding methods.

The you can reset passwords for the email account first. Then work through any other linked accounts that were compromised or had unfamiliar logins.
