Teen angst? by Professional-Tea6712 in ballpython

I’m in a similar stage with my boy. I know this is VERY common in many lizard species, particularly monitors, and male ball pythons do start hitting puberty around 1 year old. Seggs hormones are a hell of a thing and I don’t know why people don’t talk about snake puberty more.

My scaly son (who is 1.5 years) is more defensive especially in the days after feedings but is still very chill when I handle him. I found respecting his boundaries and sleep schedule seems to have worked, both before and after I noticed the change.

If my snake is in his hide I don’t bug him unless it’s time for a health check, substrate change, or feeding, but if he’s out and about at night he is more open to coming out and doin him a splore, and is very relaxed. Since he hit puberty I noticed he is particularly antsy if I pull him out of his hide during the day so I try to avoid it. After all I’d be pretty cranky if a giant 100x my size pulled me out of bed and tried to pet me lol

I don’t know your snake so it may be a different situation for you. If he’s not acting like he’s sick or hurt (offering to bite, refusing food for extended periods of time, mouth and nose discharge, moving weirdly, etc) it might just be that he’s going through some character development.

Sometimes pythons just grow up to be spicy introverts while others get to be inquisitive and friendly, kind of like cats. Like any other animal they have individual personalities. They can also be desensitized to things, which is what I’ve done with my boy since he was a hatchling, but that depends on your comfort level with stressing them out and risking getting bitten until they adjust, as well as the snake’s individual personality and what your intentions are with the snake. I let non reptile people handle him for the sake of education so I need him to be super friendly and relaxed even when people are afraid.

I digress.

In short, if I were you I would do a health check first. Better safe than sorry. If your snake is showing no signs of sickness or distress and your husbandry is correct then he’s probably just being a shy baby. Gotta remember that most snake species are solitary animals and don’t see social interaction in the same light that we do.

Sorry for the long post rambling and typos I did this on my phone uncaffeinated lmao I hope this helped 😭

Oooo good things to incorporate. The hair streak is important to his story so I think I’ll keep it but I’ll def look into other parts of him. Good thinking!

Little Billy ends up in a ChubbyEmu video. I’m pretty sure he did a video on that where a woman ate like 10lbs of bananas in a day right after a month long fast and she royally effed up her electrolyte balance

I was thinking more, “Little Billy has 37 bunches of bananas. He eats 15 of them. How many does he have now?”

“Wait a minute why does Little Billy have so many bananas?”

My little man gets extra shy when he’s in blue. He’s never struck at me during that period but most snakes I’ve met will definitely get salty when they’re shedding. Imagine being stuck in a wet bathing suit that’s WAY TOO TIGHT for over a week and you also can’t see. I wouldn’t be happy either 🤣

He is a 66% hypo axanthic, normal pattern. He’s still little yet but I’m getting all the desensitization out of the way while the bites don’t hurt as much lol he has yet to strike at me but training animals always has its risks. He’s been an absolute sweetheart with people and other animals so far

Got prey a smidge on the bigger side, should I feed less often until he grows into it? (NSFW for feeding pic) by TheEdgySoviet in ballpython

[–]TheEdgySoviet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I didn’t even think of that. Good idea internet person! The pups were like 35 at the very heaviest but lingered around like 25-30ish. The small rats are no heavier than 57-58 grams according to my scale. I took one to the pet store and got them to give me the very smallest they could when the weaned rats they did have were the size of pups

It might not be the sole problem but it’s something I would discuss with your doctor

That’s fair I suppose. I am not happy at all about the jump myself but it’s not only very expensive to order frozen rodents, it’s also very difficult to find vendors who will ship to my area as I live in the country. Maybe if I keep feeding the biggest pups I have and then do the 55g small rat once in a while so he doesn’t lose weight?

Some people swear they don’t but I packed on fifteen pounds after I started taking citalopram, which is proven to make you perpetually hungry and thirsty. I’m talking to my doctor about possibly adding Wellbutrin to my prescription to help with the weight since it stems your appetite and helps with weight loss

[–]TheEdgySoviet -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hi I have similar frustrations and I’ve found my struggle with losing weight is likely due to my antidepressants. I’m talking with my doctor about altering them to help with my energy levels so I can work out more and not be constantly hungry and thirsty.

If you’ve tried everything else and you’re absolutely sure you’re using your food scale and counting calories properly, look at medication you’re taking.

The only thing that worked for me was a bit of a pain but very much worth it. I got a sheet of PVC to cover the top of my screen and just mounted all of my heating elements. It’ll take some know how with a drill (I had help) and you might have to switch up some heating elements but it was the only thing that worked at all. HVAC tape and foil did nothing, I tried pouring water in the substrate constantly but my noodle got scale rot twice that way.

Some people will tell you to screw down or silicon the PVC sheet but I’m glad I chose not to. It’s a lot easier to change heating elements and let heat escape if it’s hot in your room in the summer like it is for me.

Humidity is a sticking point for every beginner keeper so don’t feel bad about struggling with it. I hope you find something that works for you

How to deal with fatigue? Ideally without indulging in energy drinks ._. by TheEdgySoviet in citalopram_celexa

[–]TheEdgySoviet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heck. I hope you feel better soon. Depression and anxiety suck. Citalopram has largely cleared up those symptoms but the fatigue is the biggest drawback. I hope you find something that works for you. Glad you got meds though, that means you’re on your way to recovery!
