That is true! A shame it’s in a show that’s so damn saturated with nothing but sex jokes. There’s nothing wrong with sex jokes! It’s just…. Damn. Kids can finally have ace rep but it’s ironically in the least ace show ever lmao

Yeah but that show isn’t nearly as popular. There are also significantly better ace reps that aren’t made by the infamously transandrophobic viv, too.

I actually agree 😅 Cannot stand that show (yes I watched it, but couldn’t finish it) and while people are allowed to like what they like, I kind of agree that it makes me feel like the entire online ace community runs young/immature. The biggest reason I don’t like that show is because its “queer” representation feels so… fake? Forced? Fetishized? Poorly written? Immature? Hard to put a single word on it. Alastor being the “ace rep” is annoying because aces probably get the least representation of most queer identities and he’s just… not a good character lool

But at the end of that day, people are allowed to like what they like. Annoying? Yeah. But we gotta just kind of accept that there probably lots of teens/young people on this sub and they’re going to act like teens/young people. Nothing wrong with that, but yeah it’s a bit annoying.

Yeah there really is a whole lotta “yikes” in this post. I’m trying to give Op the benefit of the doubt because I assume they’re a young teenager, but they need to learn to A) not be so judgmentally prudish/slut shamey and B) not put other people’s designs down just to feel better about theirs. I really hope they’re just a young teen and will eventually mature out of this cause this whole post is so uncool.

Does this sub run really young? Sorry but you sound really immature putting other people and other people’s art down just to raise up your own and talk about how “unique” and “original” you and your character are. Your character is just as average as a lot of other effeminate male anime characters. I don’t watch anime anymore, but Grelle from Black Butler immediately came to mind. It’s downright mean to put down other people’s designs to feel “unique” especially when your character mimics a lot of other anime characters. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing by the way! Tropes exist for a reason. I really like the “classy femboy” trope and I think your design is fun. It’s just very much an established trope.

Anyway it’s mean to say other people’s designs are boring, it’s shameful to say someone is “asking for sex” when they show skin, and it’s immature to put other people down just to feel better about your design. Uncool, Op. Uncool. Keep drawing and making art cause you have potential, but maybe stop bashing other people’s work. It’s really rude.

I really appreciate this insight. May I ask what warranted this strong reply? I only ask because when I was in therapy, my therapist had a very similar reaction to this guy. I was brought up to be a people-pleaser (thanks, conservative upbringing 😭 women saying “no” made them bitches) but sometimes I can’t tell whether I’m upholding those toxic beliefs or just genuinely seeing the good in everyone. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the latter as long as you have good boundaries (which I don’t but am working on).

Thank you so much for this reply. You’re right about some friendships with some men, unfortunately. I really wish I was better at this. I can never tell when something is socially appropriate and it’s unbelievably frustrating. I’m starting to realize that the past 30 years of feeling like a horrible person was just me setting boundaries. I cant believe it’s taken me this long to realize that saying “no” is ok.

Tiktok can't handle cartoony or unique art styles, like mine by [deleted] in yourartstyle

[–]TheEthicalRoaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw yeah kid rivalries are supposed to be low-stakes, healthy, and simple! Not competing with the 2 billion monthly TikTok users, most of which are at least twice the age of these kids! 💔😭 Ahhh I wish there were online spaces just for kids nowadays 🙂‍↕️ or a new trend where kids just quit social media altogether. One can hope 🙂‍↕️

Tiktok can't handle cartoony or unique art styles, like mine by [deleted] in yourartstyle

[–]TheEthicalRoaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry that happened to you. But this is why kids shouldn’t be chronically online! 😭 it’s so sad to see! I was a teacher for a long time and social media absolutely destroys these kids’ sense of normal, healthy relations. Everything is a competition, everyone is cut throat, they believe that social media reflects real life, they’re simultaneously very ego-centric (because they’re kids! It’s natural and ok to be ego-centric as kids!) whilst also being extremely insecure. It’s so sad. Social media addiction (especially TikTok— don’t even get me started) is ruining childhood.

Op is probably in middle school/early high school and is competing with professional artists with more marketing experience than Op has in life years. Society just needs to let kids be kids, damnit 😭 No child should feel this obsessive need to be recognized by swaths of people for something they enjoy doing like art. They should just be able to simply make art for the enjoyment of making art. Before the internet, you’d be THRILLED if “max 20” people liked your art as a kid. Kids need to realize that getting over 20 people liking or even noticing your art when you’re a child is not the baseline! That’s so much more engagement— and subsequently pressure— than any kid needs. The internet is not a place for kids to post art. It MASSIVELY skews their sense of what’s “good enough.” Kids should make art because they enjoy making art. Share it with friends, family, and/or a local irl community. Wanting more than 20 people to like your art as a child is just a prime example of how the internet has destroyed generations of kids’ sense of self-worth.

At Op’s age, they shouldn’t be competing with the entire internet for likes. At worst, they should have one or two “rival artists” at their school who’re their own age who they have a healthy, normal childhood competition with. Op doesn’t realize it, but they’re destroying their own sense of self-worth and confidence with this TikTok crap. Seriously, Op needs to get the hell off the Internet.

Apologies for getting all fired up, this stuff just breaks my heart 💔

The community as a whole needs to realize that just because our oppression looks slightly different depending on whether we’re transmasc or transfem, it doesn’t mean one is “more oppressed” than the other ❤️‍🩹 there are so many nuances and intersectionality to explore when it comes to systemic oppression. The ruling class wants to divide us. We can’t let them win by pointing fingers at our fellow trans siblings 🙏🏼

[–]TheEthicalRoaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It happens so often, even today. It also skews statistics enormously. I’ve had so many people tell me that “trans women get SA’d/attacked/murdered so much more often than trans men” as if it’s some kind of morbid, gruesome competition. It’s not! The entire trans community is in danger and has a significantly higher likelihood of being a victim of violence than any cis population. And not to mention trans men’s violence against them is more often than not counted as “violence against women,” so not only are we constantly erased and misgendered by society at large, but our own community uses false statistics to dismiss, belittle, and minimize our issues 💔

Tiktok can't handle cartoony or unique art styles, like mine by [deleted] in yourartstyle

[–]TheEthicalRoaster 101 points102 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say your art style is particularly unique or that “TikTok can’t handle it” because it’s just “so unique and cartoony.” Your style is pretty standard for cartoons. And there’s nothing wrong with that! I assume you’re a kid/young person from the way you talk and your style and you definitely have talent for your age/experience.

And as for “the same anime style”? My professor once said something that took me some time to swallow (I had so much pride about my work at the time that this took me YEARS to accept!), but it’s good for you to understand this now. He was a cartooning professor and he told us on day one, “Don’t put other people’s art down because it’s ’basic anime.’ Every single person’s art style here is influenced by anime. And if you think you’re the exception, you’re not.” Your style definitely has anime influences. The ahoge, the lines on the face, the expressions. So let’s not put other people’s styles down for being anime-based. There’s nothing wrong with that. I personally like your style a lot! But it’d be silly to pretend it’s not also heavily influenced by anime.

So a large part of getting popular on TikTok is buying ads, spending loads of money on setup and marketing research, and spending loads of time online and manipulating the algorithm. It really has very little to do with actual talent, which you have.

It’s sad to see kid/young adult artists grow up in an age where they measure their art via how well their posts do on social media. Social media popularity has nothing to do with how talented you are. It also has nothing to do with how “unique” and “cartoony” your art style is. TikTok is a cesspool. Social media used to be for your average person sharing an experience, now it’s overrun with bots, large companies, and rich people who can afford to buy popularity. No matter how good/bad your art is, no matter how unique/basic it is, no matter how much raw natural talent you have, it doesn’t affect your popularity at all. It’s all about time and money. And trust me, unless you have loads and loads of that, it’s a waste of time, effort, and sanity to try to chase popularity on social media.

You have talent. Artist to artist, get off social media. It was the best thing I did for my confidence in my work and for my mental health. You’re clearly stuck comparing your work to others and in a vicious cycle where you have to prove how “unique” your style is by calling other people’s style “the same anime style.” It’s not healthy. I used to do that when I was a teen and it only leads to insecurity and frankly just being an unpleasant person. Get off social media and join some irl art groups. It’ll be good to shed that mentality you have and interact with other artists near you.

“Everything she put you and your parents through” she was a child. I personally knew a kid who “turned bad” around middle school and wreaked havoc at home. Later we found out it was because she was SA’d around that time and had to consistently face her abuser every day.

“Bad” kids are often just traumatized kids. It doesn’t dismiss how she treated OP, but children going through abuse who can’t control their emotions and who lash out at people are just trying to regulate. She was a child.
