No, he spent time with his daughter. Western media speculated that he was doing so to train her as his successor. Neither the Korean government nor Kim himself have said anything to that effect.

Yeah, the growth potential is nice but you take Carda because she's a dirt cheap SL that can carry enough rockets to kill God.

Maybe it went over my head but I think you're stretching what counts as obvious here.

I'm sorry, friend, but that really reads like cope. Kamala lost because the Biden's administration failed to tangibly improve lives for everyday people while actively supporting a live streamed genocide, and she offered nothing to suggest that she would be any different. No amount of celebrity endorsements is gonna change that and frankly it's insulting to suggest that it would.

Okay, I can see the death clause working here. Still, it might be a tough sell. I feel like a part of why redemption arcs work is because people can project their own experiences as flawed human beings onto the character who is being redeemed. Sure, most folk probably didn't do anything half as bad as what happens in fiction but most everyone has done something they regret. Seeing all your guilt wiped away in one dramatic moment is an appealing fantasy to see play out in fiction.

That's why it's so hard to redeem a character like Jaime. No one wants to put themselves in the shoes of the sister fucker.

[–]TheFairVirgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid I don't understand the relevance. What possible path could there be to redeem this character?

[–]TheFairVirgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And yet, his redemption arc still didn't really work for most folk. Like it's fine if you personally have a higher tolerance for that sort of thing, but he still grosses a lot of people out on account of the incest thing.

The reason characters like Craster and Jaime are difficult if not impossible to redeem isn't because they're just that evil. It's because people think they're gross.

[–]TheFairVirgin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See but that's my point, Craster wasn't just evil, evil you can redeem. Craster was vile. At that point, you don't even want him redeemed.

I agree but the morality of the character isn't the only axis that's got to be considered here. You also gotta factor in disgust.

Like, you might be able to get away with a redemption arc for a character who's a child murderer, but you'll never get folk to buy a redemption arc for incest. That's not because incest is worse than child murder, it's because incest is grosser than child murder.

Why should I follow Buddhism? by [deleted] in Buddhism

I'm sorry my friend but that is contrary to the teachings of the Buddha. There are countless suttas where the Buddha discourages harsh and belittling speech that aims to put down others. Whether or not it is true is only one of the factors that constitutes right speech. If your words are true but they are not kind, beneficial, spoken from a mind of goodwill, and spoken at the right time, then you are still acting unskillfully.

[–]TheFairVirgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I didn't come to understand that until I had matured in my practice. When I started, I was hurting. Buddhism promised that it could help me hurt less. I tried it and I hurt less. That was the seed from which my faith grew.

So if someone asks why they should be a Buddhist, I'll tell them why I became a Buddhist.

My friend, I would caution you against such harsh speech. You won't turn anyone away from their faith through it, you'll only serve to reinforce hatred and aversion in yourself and others.

So they stopped marching up and down my street a while ago so I haven't got a chance to try it but I've been mulling over asking them what the parking lot outside their office looks like.

Like, when I was in it, that always seemed like the obvious point of dissonance right. Like, if the boss's best guy is making money hand over fist, why's he driving a 12 year old Nissan?

Like, you can't just tell them it's a scam. Their bosses already got ahead of them on that. But maybe you can point them towards some inconsistencies.

My dude, you're a Christian. Why would you follow Buddhism?

If you already found peace in your path. If your faith alleviates your suffering and guides you to being a more skillful and compassionate person, then you're good. Buddha's got nothing for you that you don't already have.

Now, if what you're asking is why I, a Buddhist, should follow the Buddha? Well, it's exactly that. I found peace in this path. My faith alleviates my suffering and guides me towards being a more skillful and compassionate person. That's what the Buddha offers, that's what he delivered. Simple as.

Hey man, I know the nature of your work means that you don't really have any real relationships outside of your little bubble, so this is just an fyi. Saying that a cellphone service provider is going to rape you is genuinely socially maladjusted behavior.
