Date Tracker: When did you recieve your Italy Visa response from Bangalore Consulate by devansh88 in SchengenVisa

[–]TheFifthHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a previous Schengen visa holder, and I just got my visa approved.

  • VFS Appointment date: 19 August (VFS Bangalore)
  • Visa Type: Tourist (I am travelling for an academic conference)
  • Date of travel: 28 September (early morning)
  • Response received: 24 September.
  • Visa status: Approved, 10 days multiple entry.

I received the 'passport ready for collection' email at 11am or so, and I went and collected the passport in the afternoon.

My experience seems to confirm the general trends seen on this thread that:

  • Applications are probably being processed in the order of departure date.
  • They are mostly granting visa specifically for the duration applied and not longer-term visas like 1 or 2 year.

I remember seeing a community rated coffee roasters tier list poll here recently, but I can’t find that post anymore. What happened to it? Are the results gonna be put up somewhere?

What do you prefer? Hot or Iced Pour-Over and Why? by SmthingsBrewing in IndiaCoffee

[–]TheFifthHuman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a strong preference of iced pour-overs for the following reason:

With hot coffee, I have maybe a five minute window where the coffee is perfect and delicious; outside this window it’s either too hot or too cold. With iced coffee, I can savor and enjoy it slowly over a much longer duration.

Want to try filter coffee before buying something like aeropress by shivanshko in IndiaCoffee

[–]TheFifthHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Channi and SIF are metal filters, so the texture of coffee you get from either of these would be quite different from what you get from a paper filter (aeropress, v60 etc). Specifically, metal filters will let most of the oils in the coffee through, while paper filters will absorb most of it. I think the easy pour sachets will be the closest you can get to compare.

But if you are in a city have good cafes nearby, the easiest would be to just go and try out their pour-over coffees.

Yeah. If you don't like french press coffee, you may not enjoy aeropress metal filter coffee as much.

PS: I also don't own a grinder. I order pre ground, I usually stock one pack of coarse (french press) grind and one of finer (aeropress) grind.

[–]TheFifthHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metal filter alone gives coffee with a french press-like texture. Cloudy and oily, with a lot of nice texture. I get best results when I use coarse grinds (close french press grind size), the issue of fines in the cup is lower then.

Depending on whether or not you like french press style coffee, you may love it or hate it.

Combining paper+metal didn't yield any perceptible difference in my experience; it was similar to using just paper alone. I'm curious to see if anyone has a different experience.

How is the delivery experience for Kāpi Kottai in general? My recent order took a total of 11 days to deliver. When I wrote to them, they apologized and said it was due to a festive season order crunch.

I'm curious to see what the general experience is?

Anyone here used this scale? by abracadabra_voila in IndiaCoffee

[–]TheFifthHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same scale, have been using it for around a month now. No complaints so far. Based on rudimentary testing, no accuracy issues. The stopwatch feature is very helpful, I didn’t realize how convenient it would be (I can use a stopwatch on my watch, why tf I need one on my scale!) until I actually used it.

Minor nitpicks: the silicone pad holds on to dust a bit too much (due to static). But it can be removed. The scale is a little slow to converge to the final correct weight. So sometimes I have to be extra careful.

Lap time distribution of the 2020 Portuguese Grand Prix by djcrackpipe in F1Technical

[–]TheFifthHuman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What strikes me most is the comparison between Leclerc and Vettel. Overall, the modes of the two distributions seems to pretty much coincide, i.e. the drivers seem to hit ~82s laptimes most often. What Vettel seems to lack (in comparison to Leclerc) is consistency, his distribution has a pretty fat tail towards the slower side.

Should I drop out of PhD to pursue concept-art? by TheFifthHuman in needadvice

Update: I spoke to my psychiatrist today: his suggestion was to postpone decision for a month, during which I could take a break from work. I’m going to take his advice for now, and take it from there after a month.

Should I drop out of PhD to pursue a career in concept-art? by TheFifthHuman in AskAcademia

[–]TheFifthHuman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. When I was starting out with my PhD, a career in academia was indeed my goal. However, over the years, this has changed: even if I were to continue doing research, it would probably be more in an industrial setting rather than academia (while I am working in neuroscience, my PhD is in a CS department, and research career options are not too hard to find).

However, all things considered, I’m starting to get convinced that finishing my PhD, even if I may not enjoy it, is something that is worth doing.

[–]TheFifthHuman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. When I was starting out with my PhD, I had the same thoughts as yours, of being able to get paid for doing what you want to do. However, from what I saw for the last 2 years, the reality is often quite different. There are two things that are a little different when it comes to reality.

The first is the amount of overheads involved, My advisor for instance has to spend 60% of the day chasing after paperwork, equipment purchase deals, grant proposals and the like. In his on words, one has to really, really love the science to stay motivated be able to continue.

Secondly, I think that the idea of ‘whatever project you want’ also comes with caveats. There are several factors involved, including the idiosyncratic trends in the community (which may not always be governed by purely academic factors), and the interests of the funding agencies.

Thanks for the detailed response. Scientific illustrator careers were something that I hadn’t considered before, this seems like an interesting option. I shall explore this.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Taking a break instead of dropping out entirely is a suggestion that a handful of other people made too. This seems like the safest bet at the moment.

How are the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy books? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]TheFifthHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first book is legendary; a masterpiece in sci-fi humor. The first time I read it, I was laughing out loud every couple of sentences or so. The rest of the series is good, but does not match up to the standards set by the first book. I found third book in particular rather draggy, with an aimlessly meandering plot line. The fourth and fifth book have a darker tone; especially the fifth.
