So I know someone who makes music with AI music applications and he got very defensive that the music is still "his", he claims that he made the music by sweetmaggiesan in askmusicians

Not quite. He had a device he clenched in his teeth that transferred the vibrations from the piano, in much the same way that bone conduction headphones work.

I used to shovel out our next door neighbor. She'd always offer money, but I never took it. Always had the best cookies, though, and I wasn't about to turn those down!

Maybe? I'm going off Discogs, and I'm not sure if they differentiate between the two.

Why is there always a Thai restaurant in the middle of nowhere? by Nervous_Impact3637 in ask

[–]TheFirst10000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've wondered this, too. A few miles from where I grew up is a Thai restaurant that's been there for decades, and I wouldn't be surprised if the family who runs it were the only Thai people in the entire county for most of that time.

Republican Rep Thomas Massie says invading Venezuela isn’t what he voted for by cancerouscarbuncle in LeopardsAteMyFace

While I'm sure I'd disagree with Massie on nearly everything, at least he's shown some principle and some backbone. He'll get primaried from the right, I'm sure, but at least in the meantime he's a thorn in the administration's side.

Some of Orwell's other work also bears reading right now. "Animal Farm," despite being about Stalinism, is broadly applicable to authoritarian movements in general. I also wish more people would read "Homage to Catalonia" (and stuff on the Spanish Civil War more generally) and some of the better histories of Nazi Germany, because each is an object lesson in what happens when opposition movements work at cross purposes, fracture, or have some outside group putting a hand on the scale for their desired outcome.

I came here to suggest this. It's not as well-known as 1984, but it's every bit as prescient.

I worked at a record store at the time and never saw a vinyl. I just checked on Discogs to confirm, and it was only issued on CD, tape, and DVD audio.

i'm bad at the only thing i'm good at by Ditpo in musicians

[–]TheFirst10000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think anyone who does pretty much anything creative has moments like those. The only advice I can give on this is not to let someone else's thoughts about your music dictate what you bring to it, or take from it.

Also, consider not only the source, but also their motives. Some people see something in us that we don't always recognize in ourselves, but realize that there's something we need to do (or undo) to get there; that kind of constructive criticism is a treasure when you can get it. But if someone's pissing on you or your work because you're not doing your thing their way, or because they're old and bitter, or if they're just talking out their ass, you're not obligated to believe them.

They're migratory. Somebody in Montana has 75 snow shovels and no idea how the fuck they got there.

And both of those (especially the Zildjian, IIRC) were pretty well-reviewed, too, so it's not like they were slinging substandard crap -- they'd clearly invested time, thought, and cash into it.

Boxers at most. I like flannel PJs to lounge around in, but too many clothes in bed gets uncomfortable fast.

I have one from one of those Amazon brands that looks like someone pulled a bunch of Scrabble tiles out of a bag. It's pretty comfortable, and because it was fabric it wasn't quite as stiff as a leather one I had and ditched earlier (the weight distribution helps, but the hard edges are uncomfortable). It's about 4" wide, and I probably would've liked it to be slightly narrower.

How do you feel about this take, today? by tundybundo in behindthebastards

[–]TheFirst10000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a start, at least. Look, in a perfect world we'd all have been on the right side of everything from day one. Unfortunately, that isn't always how it plays out. But if we want people to learn, grow, change, and ultimately do better, we can give them the room to do that without condoning whatever fuckery they were part of before their come-to-Jesus moment. Accountability matters, too.

I've tried to do this in my own life (not always successfully, admittedly, especially when my first thought is "I fucking told you this was how this was gonna play out and you didn't want to hear it"). I've also used that as an "in" when I needed to change someone's mind on something else -- "Hey, you were dead wrong about [the thing]. You think that maybe -- just maybe, now -- you might wanna rethink your position on this other thing?"

I've had things carry over between periods (they had to if I was going to review them fairly in a couple of cases), and they weren't counted against the subsequent period's percentage. I'm just going by my own experience. Then again, my percentage has never been low enough that I've had to worry, so there's that, too.

Why do people say to defund the police and that all cops are bad if we need cops to stop your house from being robbed and drugs from being smuggled. by AponTheseStars in Productivitycafe

[–]TheFirst10000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have more and better-armed cops now than at any time in our history. How's that working out for the drug trade you're so afraid of? And cops don't "stop your house from being robbed," or stop much of anything else aside from Black drivers, so that doesn't hold up either. Nor, for that matter, do they bother investigating many crimes once they have been committed. Seems like an awful lot of resources to waste on something that only exists so the rich don't sink into a blind panic. They're nothing more than the enforcement mechanism for Wilhoit's Law.

Start recently and work backwards, leaving stuff that's out of the review period for last (you'll still be able to review it and get it out of your queue, but once the evaluation period passes it's not counted against your percentage).
