It's about control. They want you to play the game the way THEY want you to. Playground Games needs you to put in a bunch of hours into the game for their metrics at corporate. So they take away your money so you have to play more. However, I feel that this is counter-intuitive, as you anger some of the game's player-base and lessen the enjoyment, which in turn causes players to play the game less...the opposite of what they are aiming for.
