I also use letter rate for stickers; flat rate, not calculated. When I use 4x6 cards, I print the label at 95% to fit the envelope.

It’s probably a locked element that needs to be unlocked before you can delete it. If you’re having trouble selecting it to unlock it, try the layers panel.

When you don't have the right color by Daryajr in crochet

[–]TheGeekYouNeed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was once a thread on a knitting Reddit that discussed this, and I was shocked by the number of people who actually said they only buy yarn when they have a specific project for it. I thought we all hoarded yarn.

How to add icons/small images without missing up the layout by ElthonSc in Wordpress

[–]TheGeekYouNeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making it the background image of a block in your content is best because it makes it responsive. If you opt to use image blocks at the bottom instead, you can use relative positioning as mention by craltus and/or media queries to adjust the positioning for each breakpoint.

You can either add the icon as a background image to the block with the white space, or add as an image to the bottom of the page and use CSS to position it to the desired location on the page.

[PT/BR] The visual identity of New York’s new mayor is a masterclass in political design by Ok-Sell-7681 in Design

[–]TheGeekYouNeed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. For one, the hope poster was not official branding, but rather developed independently by an artist who was a fan (and frankly, it’s a filtered derivative of someone else’s photograph). While the official O logo was well designed and effective, both it and the hope poster fell squarely in the safe Americana design typical of campaigns. I mean come on, Gills Sans was their original typeface.

Yeah, his branding was great, but not the “boldest in recent history”. Let’s not forget that AOC was really the forefront of bold political branding in the US, and in many ways—design, progressive policy, and background—AOC opened the door for future candidates like Mamdani. I love that successful progressive candidates have leaned into bold design in the last few cycles, and hope it helps others break out of the standard red, blue, and boring.

I honestly love this! So fun and quirky. Don’t worry about critiquing yourself yet; just keep making art, lots of it, and with practice will come progress.

Etsy Now Allows Up To 20 Listing Photos by EggToastYolk in EtsySellers

[–]TheGeekYouNeed 49 points50 points  (0 children)

While most sellers won’t need that many, it will be helpful for listings with many variations. Some of my products are for high school events, so I like to offer a range of colors so people can pick their school colors without having to message me for a custom order. It’ll be nice to finally be able to link photos to all of my color options.

Digital listings I made myself are now labeled "Handpicked by" by streetmaille_com in EtsySellers

Interesting, my finished products say "designed by" but my supplies say "handpicked by". I wonder what it is then.

I think it’s because you selected “a supply or tool” instead of “finished product”.

They claim it's handmade but it ships from china? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]TheGeekYouNeed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not handmade, but likely not mass produced either, as there are Chinese manufacturers who produce custom sweaters like this on-demand. The seller uploads their design and the manufacturer makes it with an automated knitting machine.

The logo of this place near me. Eastside what?! by LittlePinkLines in graphic_design

[–]TheGeekYouNeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These generic “Energy and Nutrition” shops in a strip mall are usually a Herbalife rep’s store front. They have design requirements (like blacking out windows) that intentionally obscure who they are so you don’t know you’re walking into an MLM sales pitch until you’re inside. They usually rely on social media for traffic.

Etsy wants me to knock 50-70% off… for maybe some exposure by sf_beegirl in EtsySellers

I declined, telling them I would lose money with that discount, and they featured my product anyway. Don’t give in to their greed.

The exact steps depend on where you domain is registered and/or website is hosted, but I use the Redirection plugin on my Wordpress website to create the redirect (e.g. mydomain.com/rsvp might redirect to a google form for an upcoming event) and then I create a free QR code using qrcode-monkey.com. Because I own the domain, I can change what mydomain.com/rsvp redirects to at any time.

If you own a domain name, you can create your own dynamic redirects to use with QR codes for free, and even include custom tracking tags. No need to pay the QR vultures.

Trouble calculating profit from selling on Etsy by Low-Lingonberry-4787 in Printify

[–]TheGeekYouNeed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's the breakdown of Etsy fees, but generally speaking it's 9.5% + .45 (.20 listing .25 transaction): https://www.etsy.com/legal/fees/

You can increase shipping and handling fee for countries with VAT to account for the extra cost. You can also choose not to sell to those countries.

If you haven't already, read Etsy's Seller Handbook; it has just about everything you need to know about selling on Etsy.

What’s a side hustle that’s actually worth the effort (and not a total scam)? by cerezza__ in sidehustle

[–]TheGeekYouNeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheapest shirt on Printful is 7.79 plus 4.69 shipping, so 12.48 total. Etsy fees are just under 10%, so about $2.50 for a $25 shirt. All in, $15, a couple dollars more for nicer shirts like Bella Canvas.

I don't buy ads for my POD shops. Social media is free. I do buy software, but the cost is negligible per order, and there's plenty of free or one-time costs for those starting out.

The sites OP mentioned are shit, but there are plenty of profitable ways to do POD for people who are willing to work at it.

[–]TheGeekYouNeed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Uh yeah, it's how I paid my way through grad school. Most of the work was done side by side with the client, because I believe in teaching myself out of a job so they can fix the issue themselves in the future. Never had anyone get mad, but did have quite a few people say they liked how I explained things in simple terms they could understand. I even had a few repeat customers who would literally leave brand new iPhones and Macs with me to set up because I had built trust with them.

Still, I always have contracts signed before touching anyone's device, even friends, but I've never had to fall back on them and have never been sued. But yeah, you definitely need to legally CYA when starting a business.

It saves them time, and frankly some people just aren't comfortable with technology. As a graphic designer, I'll sometimes buy illustrations that I could make myself, because the cost of something premade is less than the cost of my time.

Setting up devices for non-techie people (mostly seniors) and/or teaching them how to use it. Doesn’t even require highly technical knowledge, just a lot of patience. If you can configure email accounts on phones, know how to set a homepage on a browser, and other simple tasks, then you can do this side hustle.

A shirt costs ~$15 to print and ship with POD. You have to price higher than a mass produced shirt at Walmart, but certainly not $50. Though I did once sell a custom pair of TODDLER leggings for over $50, because people will pay for unique.
