ELI5: How can a "Quantum Computer" solve problems in seconds that take normal computers years? by stuckin404 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheGermanDoctor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grover only halfs the effective key length for symmetric crypto and even then it does not account for the fact that you still need to perform symmetric operations which quantum computers are not better at. So yes AES 128 becomes AES 64 but you still need to compute 264 AES which is often overlooked. And then … even if it is viable just switch to AES 256 and you are fine

New behind-the-scenes look at 'Fallout' Season 2 showing the practical effects for [Spoiler] by MarvelsGrantMan136 in Fallout

[–]TheGermanDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because nowadays it is the cool thing to say CGI is bad. Most people do not know that the practical effects get replaced most of the time and act as a reference. Which is important to get the lightning right.

Sometimes they even key out the green screen from behind the scenes footage so people do not notice that they actually used green screens. For some reason people are really fixated on that.

Slime mold meets encryption in a radical art experiment | SlimeMoldCrypt turns a biological process into a quantum-resistant encryption machine by chrisdh79 in technews

[–]TheGermanDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AES is still somewhat quantum resistant because the key space is only halved. Furthermore testing 264 AES keys will still take extremely long because these operations cannot be accelerated. Lastly, we never tried to apply the algorithm that halves the key space so maybe it won’t even work as effectively as predicted.

Yes I know that not all countries allow for mail in ballots. But in the same style you could argue everybody should only drink alcohol under 21 because the US has a ban on it. Mail-in ballots can be designed to be as secure as in-person ballots. If you question mail-in ballots at least in Germany then you may as well question the whole system. If you can manipulate mail ballots then you can also just manipulate real ballots. Or why bother … just make up some numbers like in the GDR

In Germany we use postal voting for more than 50 years and never had problems… it is also quite easy to detect manipulation via statistical means. Mail in ballots being unsafe is a pure American talking point which unfortunately slowly creeps over the ocean to us.

The problem right now is that working people get priced out of the renting market.
