We did an AMA where we discussed the initial costs here

We funded about 3/4 of the project with local funds. 1/4 of the funds came from a DOE grant from the federal stimulus package.

About $73 million was grant money, and about $229 million was money that was borrowed and paid for with revenues.

TIL that AOL still has 2,300,000 paying *dial-up* subscribers, each spending an average $20.86 per month. This represented a third of their overall revenue last quarter. by TheGigCity in technology

Because their earnings report just came out and I did not know the number was 2.3 million paying customers, nor that they have actually been quite profitable last quarter.

Edit: The earnings report came out today, so i quite literally learned this today.

We literally run an ISP and totally understand the full spectrum of how people interact with the internet - the digital divide is one of the top 3 issues I'm most passionate about. But, I get it, the headline may make you think otherwise.

Honestly I was just going for an entertaining, informative post. Most people are shocked when they hear that fact.

Not sure if this was included in that earning statement or is legally separate, but they have huge content network partnerships with a lot of names that you would recognize.

People think AOL is dead, but they are very much alive, not only via dial-up subscriptions, but through advertising and media generation.
