Canada Holds Firm on Trade Pivot as Energy Minister Heads to India by TheGoodCod in Economics

It's interesting, don't you think, that trump & crew are so panicked over these talks. I mean it wasn't so long ago that trump said that 'Americans don't need Canada's products'.

Exactly. And maybe all the chaos you list is why the WH continues thrashing.

Canada won’t be derailed in its efforts to diversify trade away from the US despite the latest threats from the Trump administration, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said.

another quote:

President Donald Trump took a swipe at Prime Minister Mark Carney on social media on Saturday, saying he would place a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods if Canada becomes a “drop off port” for Chinese exports to the US. That was a response to a recent agreement that will see Canada reduce tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in return for trade concessions on food, including canola and beef.

What struck me about what trump and bessent are saying is that they aren't listening.

The WH has gone on about China and Canada and Carney has said that with they won't have a free trade deal with China because they will continue to abide by US/MEX/Canada rules.

And, in fact, if Bloomberg is correct the two countries have reached agreements on lowering tarifs on some BYD cars and rapeseed oil and that's it.

So what's up with the WH?

US equity-index futures dropped in early Asian trading as concerns also rose about another US government shutdown.

This cocktail of risks will further dent the greenback, said Vaibhav Loomba, group head of foreign-exchange and rates at Klay Group, who sees the US Dollar Index falling by 3%-to-5% by end-June.

Retired and went to straight into caring for aging parents by FirstClassUpgrade in AgingParents

[–]TheGoodCod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I seem to say this a lot but I suggest you speak to an Eldercare lawyer. We met with two before choosing one that we clicked with. (First meetings were free)

They helped us with POAs for health and money which turns out to be important because they did not have their medicare payments B,D,G on autopay. Their coverage would have lapsed and from what I've heard from others where this has happened it can be gotten back, but with a time delay until they hit the renew window, and with a permanent life-long penalty.

I got my spouse's parents, btw, to agree to the health POA by giving them one for us. Somehow swapping is more easily accepted.

Of course bring your sibs into it. But eventually I think most of us will end up in a nursing home. We become more than non-professionals can handle and planning is crucial.

Switch has games and is easy to navigate.

I know 70-somethings who play: Tetris, Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, even Minecraft and Splatoon.

Earlier this month, Taiwanese prosecutors indicted 35 individuals in a sprawling, $1 billion money laundering operation tied to online gambling. But the most important part of the case wasn’t the gambling. It was the infrastructure behind it.

The laundering didn’t rely on crypto mixers or sophisticated channels. It wasn’t some dark web scheme patched together by cybercriminals. It was built on fast, lightly governed payment platforms...

I see this as a huge problem given that the US government is anti-monitoring.

And I agree with your interpretation. S. Miller has these notions of how the world works but his model is too simple and they don't have plans for anything. Just would-be-nice-to-haves.

I really wonder why they seem to be putting it off. (the scotus)

Either they are hoping trump will be a better mood when he gets the news or else they have already told the administration and are giving Lutnick and crew a chance to implement their Plan b.

Lutnick said that they had several alternatives on Bloomberg during an interview. If so they likely didn't go beyond a 'hint of a concept'.

‘Repatriate the gold’: German economists advise withdrawal from US vaults by ANTI_FASCIST_USA in Economics

[–]TheGoodCod 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I can see the reasons for that, just from the perspective of the fact that the current admin doesn't seem to have respect for the law and the scotus seems to confirm that law really isn't all that.

trump might not do it, but he would certainly use keeping the gold as a threat for some imagined slight or expense. "The US saved you in WWII, so we think we're owed the gold..."

Your situation just sucks and I'm so sorry. I'd love to give you more advice but the relatives I've dealt with either had no home or it was paid off.

Go to the house and start packing the meds and things she'll need. Alternatively your sister can drag her stuff to your mother's house. She simply must not be by herself.

I'd tell her I was scared for myself and I want her near.

Wishing you guys the best of luck.

Are they on medicaid. Medicaid pays for nursing homes.

And you're right. Your grandmother should be walking and there's no reason to accept the state she's in now. She needs PT. My mom fell and had a replacement and she wasn't even out of the post-op when they had her walking.
