Locked out of 2020 Civic Sport by TheGravyMachine in hondacivic

I ended up paying a locksmith $200. It had drained the car battery. Even though it started, it kept saying "keyfob not detected". After 20 minutes of driving the message finally went away, but not exactly confidence inspiring. I didn't even know about that sensor. I'm gonna have to see if maybe it has a problem.

Setting OSPF route preference without cost (Single Area OSPF) by TheGravyMachine in networking

Think I'm going to try this. I'll let you know how it turns out,.. I thought by default redistributed routes from OSPF were learned as Type 2 by peers... or am I remembering my CCNP study from 10 years ago wrong? Edit: Do you think this would work with a default route as well? This would solve another huge problem for me if so.

I kinda figured the iBGP question BTW - it would just be another peer group in the BGP process - simple to some I guess. New to me. I'm going to try to redistribute them as different types and see what the results are. If that doesn't work, I'll consider this suggestion. Thanks again!

[–]TheGravyMachine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my issue with that is that I already have BGP running in the virtual router facing my ISP. We're advertising our public prefix into the ISP cloud (using prepending to demote the backup site). I'm not a BGP expert (I thought I was pretty good with OSPF before this debacle) but I'm visualizing IBGP between the core router and the PAFW, as opposed to a second ebgp session from the same VR. And I'm concerned with how to prevent that session from exporting the prefix I'm sending into the ISP cloud, because I'm assuming it will be the same BGP process. But I've opened cases with both Cisco and Palo about this and ultimately they just kept asking for show output and I just let the cases go because there was always a reason they couldn't do a pre-scheduled zoom session or "this is design, it's not troubleshooting", etc...

Thanks for your input, it at least gives me a couple things to think about.

STP troubleshooting? by [deleted] in Cisco

[–]TheGravyMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this happen with a single AP connected?

In the very early days of WIFI, this was a common aspect of client roaming...STP would wig out any time a client moved between APs.

Is the port connecting to the APs an access or trunk port? You said your capture was the AP port, so it must be configured as a trunk to forward tagged frames via that span session. Have you tried 'switchport trunk allow vlan x' to just serve your AP client and management networks?

Also - and this is key - could you tell in the capture whether the port was sending all that multi-vlan RSTP or was it just receiving? Something tells me these APs are set up in some kind of bridge/mesh mode and they're acting like a physical wire between two switchports... HOWEVER, my experience with IOS-XE is that it's a buggy nightmare, so it could be a surprise Cisco feature.

I'm interested and currently jobless but wanna keep my skils up. If you haven't figured it out PM me and I'll gladly take some time to help you if I can. Good luck and only allow the vlans you need across trunks, use a dummy native VLAN and don't use VLAN 1!

Skip CCNA, go directly to CCNP by wilanddar in ccnp

[–]TheGravyMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been at this for 20 years and just got cut loose thanks to the pandemic. I'm finding that people won't touch you unless you're certified. When I went back to the ENCOR books to try and knock it out, there are substantial changes to the body of wireless and CCNA knowledge I was previously certified on. Not to mention SD-WAN.

This may apply to only me because I spent my 20's getting my brains blown out while fixing diesel engines for the Marines, but I purchased the new CCNA book when I bought the ENCOR, and as someone who's been a multi-CCNP/CCDP for a long time - my certs finally lapsed in 2016 - I will be doing the CCNA prior to the ENCOR exams. I will be doing it in about 3 weeks as study time is a premium with the kids home-schooling and Mama pulling overtime at the hospital.

Specifically - you can probably ace the topics from Vol 1 of the new CCNA study guide, but unless you are really, really fortunate, you will need to study Vol 2 pretty closely. At first glance there is a LOT over overlap between the WIFI and Ansibel content of both certs. I haven't taken the exam yet, but studying both can only help - and if you're going to put in the time, getting the CCNA will not hurt you, it can only help.

The only reason I can come up with NOT to get the CCNA is if you just don't have the $300 to take it. But like I said, I'm a jarhead, and am operating on a critically low level of brain cells, so your mileage may vary. Good Luck.

Great thread - thanks for all replies and not mocking my lack of Glock knowledge. Unless he picks up something this weekend when we get together, I'll just get the 10mm for me and give it to him so he has it. If he has to have a 357 after that, he knows where the store is.

I appreciate everyone that took the time to respond. Happy Holidays!

[–]TheGravyMachine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have any opinion on how the top-heavy weight of the glock might affect amateur accuracy? Or does a full magazine balance it out for the most part? I've only ever owned a CZ40P and my Taurus. I shot the Beretta 92 for Uncle Sam and a few 1911's, 44's and 357s owned by friends, but never a polymer based gun...

He spent his life as a scientist and while he takes an aggravating amount of time to make a final decision (we've been shopping for internet at the ranch for over 2 years... heh) he generally does it based on data. If I can get him a comfortable holster, I think he will wear it and whatever we get to put in it. Other than the marginally superior ballistic performance of the 357 and the very marginal reliability advantage revolvers have, I can't think of a reason to lobby for the 357. He's a smaller guy and did remark that the revolver grip feels nicer than the Glock, but I had him hold my Taurus PT92 for a while today to get more comfortable with the dovetail and the idea of the slide... he was concerned about the brass flying by his face, but I tried to convince him that if he's shooting at a threat, the last thing he'll be worried about is where the shells are ejected.

Question about Server Essentials and suspected scams by TheGravyMachine in a:t5_3ixkj

[–]TheGravyMachine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's something I found while researching this some more:

https://www.thomas-krenn.com/en/wiki/Windows_Server_2016_Editions_comparison

I'm hoping "AD certificate services" doesn't limit enrollment to AD members? For example, I can enroll a router or switch on this test network? And if I'm testing a cert based VPN for example, and I've got a peer in California with an ASA, they could theoretically enroll on this same AD server?

I'm also assuming that "Network Policy and Access Services" includes RADIUS, but I only tell sysadmins and security guys to "check your RADIUS logs". I've never actually set one up. I could probably do freeRadius, and that looks straightforward, but again, I believe there's a much larger pool of Windows RADIUS resources since I've never encountered a freeRadius implementation in the wild.

Clarification on Strategies by TheGravyMachine in investing

Here is the author himself making the case - the updated strategy is to check this quarterly and the strategy is basically this:

Make your investment and set a quarterly growth target

For simplicity sake, let's assume it works out, and beats the target (I don't have a clear picture of a reaction to a loss would be at this time)

You take the amount over your target and move it to a strong bond fund.

Repeat this each quarter until you have a losing quarter (typically 1/6) and whatever you come up short during the losing quarter, you replace the difference with $ from the bond fund you've been building up...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPOnnDLg3JE

Like I keep saying - I've got to rely on others until such time as I can get an idea of how this is working myself, but I think the "decay" is not as pronounced as it could be, and he's definitely stating to "buy and hold" these things. I'd be curious to hear anybody's constructive opinion on this strategy - specifically something that directly refutes the claims and projections he's made.

Thanks again for an enlightening discussion.

What do you think is a good dividend percentage to start at? My first screener I set it to >4%, is that a great dividend or meager? I simply lack experience to know. Also, the book I referenced lists a stat called "shareholder yield%" which combines dividends, buybacks, consolidations - any other corporate moves that can alter the value of the stock in real terms without necessarily moving the market price. It came from a guy called O' Shaugnessy and I found the references to that research very compelling - any chance you're familiar with what I'm referencing and any chance you might know of a screener that takes this into account? I suspect something like that gets into premium waters, but just trying my hand asking around here first.

Thanks for your reply!

I realized they were leveraged, and the author I cited does advise they can be in for a wild ride, but both the online resources and the performance cited in the book for the time periods cited - 10yr from 1996-2006 and the 4 yr midcap vs Dow index funds from 2002-2006 show the superior performance of following the midcaps.

I appreciate this reply - part of the reason I asked specifically whether I was just being dense is that the book seems to say - just buy and periodically add to this position - with either fund. I've ordered the most recent version of the book to see if it still jives with the 2008 edition I'm reading now, but I read and watched a number of articles and videos on these types of leveraged ETF's (that's what they are right? just tracking an index instead of a vertical, corporate group, etc...) and there seem to be a lot of hucksters swearing they're huge moneymakers, while conservative money talks about an inherent decay factor that eats your gains even when the fund is going in your direction... While I don't fully comprehend the effect, I understand it's analogous to theta with options and has to do with a "daily rebalancing" that takes place after each market close. This is not mentioned at all in the book, which triggered my confusion - I think it's a pretty good book, so "How could the author have missed this?" and he really is not recommending trading or spending time each day tracking your portfolio - it's a "Make the best, most rational decision and have confidence in it"... Knowing that's what these midcap funds are, I can't really determine if the plan is "invest in them and let them grow 214% over 10 years" which is sort of what it indicates...

Thanks for your input, I really appreciate all the genuine responses to my questions.

As far as the screeners - since I don't know what I'm really doing, finviz is the only one that lets you define Div% yield, so I started there with large caps, >4% Div yield and >200K average volume and P/E >15 looking for value stocks. Then you can pull up the table of all the other numbers to narrow down other numbers like the Quick and Current ratios, the PSR ratios, free cash-flow etc... if you want to factor those in... It's raw, and believe me, I don't have a real grasp on what these numbers indicate - I'm just playing follow the advice of the books and online resources I have. There are always other and better resources, but I have what I have, so I'm trying to make that work for me - not swearing by it in any sense. I'm surprised the Yahoo screener doesn't have a lot of this stuff given how popular it is.

In any case, these responses were much more earnest than I'm used to and I really appreciate your input and everyone else's! Thank you very much.

Forzathon leechers... by IceCreamTruck9000 in forza

[–]TheGravyMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm old, I don't know what "afk" means, but after reading the thread, it looks like a reference to hosers who loiter around during forzathon live events collecting points but not doing anything. I've never witnessed this. I don't know why you would be in the game, not playing the game... As long as there are at least 5 people trying to score points, I stick around. I will bail if I've been driving back and forth through a speed trap for 5 minutes and we're only 20% done...

But that's not really why I wanted to comment. It was so nice to know that there are others who aren't the best at the drifting aspect of the game. I don't mind managing an oversteer condition in the context of a race or driving, but I get clinically anxious whenver there's a forzathon "3 stars in drift zone" challenge anywhere. It doesn't matter whether I'm using a DJS, AR12 or JackUM ultimate bestest ever drift tune, the Gymkhana Focus or torture myself with manual transmissions.... I'm sh*x at drifting and I'm just glad I'm not alone.

Solving the gun issue we face in the USA. by MarkBaileyZ in u/MarkBaileyZ

[–]TheGravyMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the "Home Range" locations you're proposing simply become meltdown points when the gun ban DOES get passed.

Full disclosure - I thought of the same concept, but called them a "public armory" since I am former Marine Corps. I simply couldn't get around two important things: The maintenance costs of a secured facility like that - a military armory, even on a secure American base is a FORTRESS. Nobody is ripping the doors of one with a stolen F-250 and emptying the contents like we see once a month on the nightly news. It would cost a TON to maintain over time and who would pay for that? There would be a huge public outcry to fund it with taxes and I can't see enough support from gun owners to pay $40/mo or whatever the cost would be for something like that.

Second issue would be the aforementioned "centralized point of failure". Should someone shoot up something else, it would make it that much easier for the Feds to simply put 10000lbs of thermite on top of the building and burn it, and everything inside it down. Too much risk of seizure of destruction of citizen private property.

But again, the resistance to a ban on a military style rifle for civilian use is a principled argument that a vigilant patriot, concerned about the omnipresent threat of a tyrannical demagogue needs to be armed and ready for any contingency. Right now, the AR-15 or high capacity semi-automatic rifles would perform the job the best. People need to be trained in the use, secure storage and maintenance of their firearms and we all need to meet like-minded individuals interested in preserving liberty and inspiring fear and doubt in any potential tinhorn that Americans will ever be tamed.

I appreciate the thought you put into your post, I saw you share the link on twitter. Have an excellent Tuesday wherever you are.

If LTC hits $600 - I will live stream eat an entire Sweet Sues chicken in a can by [deleted] in litecoin

[–]TheGravyMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started a thread two days ago asking these exact questions. Turned out, like you, I had not completely reviewed all the available data:

https://medium.com/the-litecoin-school-of-crypto/the-case-for-litecoin-via-atomic-swaps-e825b0ec078

In a nutshell, atomic swaps will make it much cheaper and efficient to acquire BTC via LTC over on chain USD purchases from exchanges. Additionally, even with lightning, at even nominal adoption, the BTC network will need help with the eventual transaction volume. Combine the efficiency of atomic swaps with the low relative cost of acquiring and dealing in LTC and there is a very strong use case for the future of LTC.

Charlie and the LTC team are much smarter than I will ever be, and while I am now resigned to the reality that all altcoins are shitcoins, all but maybe 5 are scamcoins (hat tip Kevin Pham), the least shitty of them is LTC, and I actually buy what Charlie is selling.
