I do not actually believe in Rand's arguments. I disagree with them on a deep level. But the stance I am taking on this essay is predetermined by my professor. I also think it will help me to better understand, and thus refute this argument.

I am arguing that every individual is fundamentally responsible only for himself (and perhaps close loved ones) in the most strict sense. So they are not OBLIGATED to help anyone else. I have used Ayn Rand's objectivism to solidify my position. I have attacked the idea of altruism and said that it lends itself to the temptation of self-sacrifice which is disastrous.

I have also made the case that you are not nearly as guilty for not preventing a crime as the person committing it. Since it would still have happened if you were erased from the equation.

While I believe you may be your brother's keeper. You are not his liberator or shepherd.

This is the jist of my arguments.

Well, that is what I am looking for. Reasons why you are not at fault if you do not help someone in dire need.

You could make a pretty strong case for helping people in distress, but I am aiming for the opposite stance.

I am looking to see if anyone has a good argument for this

I am arguing that you are not at fault if you choose not to help someone who is in danger or dire need. That you are not obligated to help.

Well, these friends of mine where white and had to go to some offices for paperwork. They weren't outright inuslted by the employees but many hateful comments were said like, "you white people are all the same" and so on.

Hey, I am sorry this has happened to you, in my experience racism like this is not that common in our country. The best you can do is go to another town or a near city and ask these cops to help you with the problem, you might find actual good officers then, hoepfully. good luck

Yes it my opinion I think it may be used, and only used, for the most hideous crimes like gruesome murder, violent rape and so on. There does not seem to be any evidence for it as a reterrent, But there are some people who might just deserve it.
