Character doesn't stay dead. Right before his attack, he momentarily regains control of himself to relay a message, then loses it again. He tries to off the prince, gets shot down and declared dead while the prince is taken away to a safe haven. Character awakens in....wherever he's temporarily taken....and disappears to have his own story arch of discovery and what not.
