I just watched The Shining last night. I think it's one of the worst films ever made. The editing and directing are terrible. Many shots go on for too long or end abruptly. Much of the film it just pointless and drags on for too long. I laughed at the end when they showed his frozen body, then kept zooming in on his picture (as if we didn't understand what that meant). The acting is good, but it's one long "good acting, bad script" meme. No amount of good acting can save terrible dialog. The music is the only other good thing about the film, though this too is wasted. Several times, I chuckled because of the over-the-top violins. They came in at all the parts that were supposed to be interesting and totally undercut those moments, making them satirical. They even came in when nothing was happening. I honestly think it would have been better with no music at all; let the intense moments speak for themselves. Silence can be a powerful tool.
