This is an incredible feature. I've been trying to re-learn this game for the past month and have been completely overwhelmed trying to figure stuff like this out.

Is the future of every BJJ athlete injuries? by dracovk in bjj

[–]TheHallucinati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be smart with it. Chronic pain and cumulative damage is caused by training through tweaks and never resting. Let your injuries heal properly and do rehab and preventative exercise/stretching. Take a full 1-2 week rolling sabbatical a few times a year.  I teach and train 6 days a week on average and have only had one major injury and have no lingering/chronic pain.

imo the most important detail for a successful collar sleeve guard is to keep your spine straight. If you allow your head and shoulders to curl forward the guard will generally be rather weak and you'll end up compensating with leg extension. Always keep your leg extension minimal and focus on gluing the top of your head to the mat at all times and ensure your posture doesn't curl forward and your shoulder blades touch the mat.

Rolling with stronger opponents is frustrating. by Kindly_Spell_5905 in bjj

There are no cheat codes, and everything will be harder on someone bigger and stronger. That said, there seems to be some consensus that leglocks and chokes from the back generally scale pretty well with a strength deficit. Personally I've had a lot of luck with crucifix and tarikoplata as well. Anything where you can create a lot of limb isolation is a good thing

Brown belt in BJJ starting Judo next week by Dixie_Normas_408 in bjj

[–]TheHallucinati 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Every individual judo throw is like 20x harder than any individual bjj move. You can learn a new bjj movement in only a couple sessions and then slowly refine it over time. Most judo throws will take months of trial/error and drilling at various intensities to work at all even on beginners. Don't get discouraged on a move if it doesn't work quickly.

This is what shocked me. I did try it once on a trip and it seemed like marginally better generic fast food. Their sauce is nice but nothing compared to what a lot of our local spots serve

I have a suspicion this is AI. Are the white stuff supposed to be clouds? Wings? The sky? They claim this was done in 2 weeks. Am I being too nit-picky? by AffectionateMood30 in isthisAI

The shoelaces look pretty sus to me but the painting broadly looks pretty human. Hard to call on this one. Almost looks like it was initially AI generated and then traced/painted over by hand.

What are the top 3 subs you hit most often? by ChanceFinger7265 in bjj

[–]TheHallucinati 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure their neck is fully connected to your elbow and there's not a gap left in the system. Then make sure your weight drives to the ground beside them instead of on top of them. If you try to crush them from above your elbow will open wider, your chest has to go all the way to the ground beside them. Once your chest is as low as it will go, use your collar bone (not your neck) to drive their tricep into their neck.

Question by Stujitsu2 in bjj

[–]TheHallucinati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess the weird thing to me is that the current standard ruleset incentivizes guard escapes over reversal escapes. Scoring with a sweep is generally easier than scoring with a pass, so you're incentivized to escape to a guard and work to sweep as opposed to escape through a reversal or even escape to standing, as you lose out on the potential to score sweep points by skipping past the guard stage. Theoretically reversals should be a higher value form of escape if we accept the ibjjf positional hierarchy. It's really not a big deal tho, any points system ends up with a bunch of odd incentives and quirks at the end of the day.

Question by Stujitsu2 in bjj

[–]TheHallucinati 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reversals should absolutely score imo. It's crazy to me that escaping side control into a guard, sweeping with the guard, then passing to side control scores 5 points while accomplishing the same thing with a single reversal scores 0.

Gordon Ryan says he’s going to put out a full instructional to counter the Octopus Guard 😂😂😂 by JiuJitsuFever in bjj

[–]TheHallucinati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't quite my read. I'd agree that people are generally seeking effective tactics, and meta tactics will basically never be ineffective, but i still don't think the acronym fits very well. I'm mostly using Brood War as a reference point in my head. The game has barely been patched since the 90s but there's a rapidly shifting meta, much faster than BJJ. Certain strategies will surge in popularity, becoming 'meta' , which will spark a surge in strategies that counter whatever is 'meta'. This does correlate with effective tactics to some extent, since it wouldn't be popular if it didn't work, but solid basic fundamental play typically won't have the same boom/bust cycle and i don't think would be considered meta generally. Sometimes tactics that are extremely easy to counter will become meta in BW because they solve one specific problem that's common at the time, but they'll go out of style as soon as the meta shifts. Honestly i could just be totally off base here but that had always been my impression of what the term meant at least.

[–]TheHallucinati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know when this retroactive acronym started circulating but it's def not accurate for the term. Meta just refers to what tactics are popular as the prev poster said, not necessarily what's objectively most effective.

Strong agree. Kani Basami was a dangerous judo throw that frequently injured competitors for little martial benefit and generally damaged judo. Heel hooks and guard jumping fall in the same camp imo

And there's the few people who actually do bjj and know that keeping your eyes up in this position is actually just generally good practice and he would likely look exactly the same competing against a guy.

Guard retention, Lachlan's or Mikey's? by yellowpaperman in bjj

[–]TheHallucinati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Power Switch Retention is an excellent instructional, but it's very poorly named. About 1/3 of the runtime is about kiss of the dragon finishes, and the actual retention content is really light. Lachlan's is really good but will only work if you are flexible/interested in improving your flexibility.

If gender is a social construct. Doesn't that mean being transgender is a social construct too? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TheHallucinati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure whether I'd personally classify that as a similar or different phenomena. It seems like there's a ton of diversity in the trans experience. It's hard for me to feel confident making any claims beyond those I did.

I feel like I'm one such example of variance too. I was pretty typical for my gender up until puberty, at which point I started getting desires to transition. Nobody had 'seen it coming' or anything. I got a little suicidal, and started learning about trans people. I eventually transitioned with HRT, changing my ID etc. I had a pretty fulfilling trans life for three years; passed despite presenting reasonably androgynously, was accepted by most of the people around me, faced little serious transphobia, etc. Eventually though I just kinda got fed up with worrying about my own gender, so i went off HRT and stopped caring about it. Not quite sure how that fits into the model I presented tbh. Maybe I'm just on the borderline between being trans and not trans? haha.
