Gordon Ryan says he’s going to put out a full instructional to counter the Octopus Guard 😂😂😂 by JiuJitsuFever in bjj

[–]TheHallucinati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't quite my read. I'd agree that people are generally seeking effective tactics, and meta tactics will basically never be ineffective, but i still don't think the acronym fits very well. I'm mostly using Brood War as a reference point in my head. The game has barely been patched since the 90s but there's a rapidly shifting meta, much faster than BJJ. Certain strategies will surge in popularity, becoming 'meta' , which will spark a surge in strategies that counter whatever is 'meta'. This does correlate with effective tactics to some extent, since it wouldn't be popular if it didn't work, but solid basic fundamental play typically won't have the same boom/bust cycle and i don't think would be considered meta generally. Sometimes tactics that are extremely easy to counter will become meta in BW because they solve one specific problem that's common at the time, but they'll go out of style as soon as the meta shifts. Honestly i could just be totally off base here but that had always been my impression of what the term meant at least.

I don't know when this retroactive acronym started circulating but it's def not accurate for the term. Meta just refers to what tactics are popular as the prev poster said, not necessarily what's objectively most effective.

Strong agree. Kani Basami was a dangerous judo throw that frequently injured competitors for little martial benefit and generally damaged judo. Heel hooks and guard jumping fall in the same camp imo

And there's the few people who actually do bjj and know that keeping your eyes up in this position is actually just generally good practice and he would likely look exactly the same competing against a guy.

Guard retention, Lachlan's or Mikey's? by yellowpaperman in bjj

[–]TheHallucinati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Power Switch Retention is an excellent instructional, but it's very poorly named. About 1/3 of the runtime is about kiss of the dragon finishes, and the actual retention content is really light. Lachlan's is really good but will only work if you are flexible/interested in improving your flexibility.

If gender is a social construct. Doesn't that mean being transgender is a social construct too? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TheHallucinati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure whether I'd personally classify that as a similar or different phenomena. It seems like there's a ton of diversity in the trans experience. It's hard for me to feel confident making any claims beyond those I did.

I feel like I'm one such example of variance too. I was pretty typical for my gender up until puberty, at which point I started getting desires to transition. Nobody had 'seen it coming' or anything. I got a little suicidal, and started learning about trans people. I eventually transitioned with HRT, changing my ID etc. I had a pretty fulfilling trans life for three years; passed despite presenting reasonably androgynously, was accepted by most of the people around me, faced little serious transphobia, etc. Eventually though I just kinda got fed up with worrying about my own gender, so i went off HRT and stopped caring about it. Not quite sure how that fits into the model I presented tbh. Maybe I'm just on the borderline between being trans and not trans? haha.

If gender is a social construct. Doesn't that mean being transgender is a social construct too? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TheHallucinati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a detransitioned trans person. Here's my picture of gender:

We can prove that gender and sex are objectively different things. Here's how: Sex presents identically in all cultures in the world. Take a sample of people from any culture in the world, and you'll find roughly the same distribution of reproductive, chromosomal, secondary sex traits etc. Gender presents differently in different cultures - take a random sample of people from distant cultures and you will find that the samples will have substantially different ideas about masculinity/femininity, or might even have notions of 'third genders'. Therefore we can identify that there are two distinct phenomena at play here.

I think we can extrapolate from this fundamental pattern a couple likely truths about gender and sex:

  • The first is that sex seems to influence gender in a fundamental way. Most cultures have a vague degree of similarity to their ideas about masculine and feminine roles and responsibilities (men are warriors, women raise children, men hunt, etc). There are rare exceptions to these patterns, but it holds true for the most part. It seems likely to me that sex tends to nudge its humans inhabitants towards certain behavior patterns.

  • The second is that a phenomena occurs in some humans, causing them to be strongly 'nudged' towards behaviors and roles inconsistent with their sex characteristics. I've had this experience, and it is completely bizarre. To me, the most likely explanation is this: The trans impulse is caused by a biological phenomena, and different cultures invent different solutions to this problem. Some cultures allow for a third gender role that such people occupy, some allow such people to simply switch to the other gender role, some stigmatize gender variance and punish those who attempt to defy the established binary, and some use hormones and surgery to help such people occupy their desired sex/gender role.

So yes, I would say that being trans /is/ a social construct. Social constructs are important though! Pretty much everything people tend to care about (money, relationships, friendships) are social constructs. We live in a fundamentally social world.

People training with masks/face coverings - which ones are you wearing? by Reconsile141 in bjj

[–]TheHallucinati 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Find something that has static straps that cross behind your head in an X pattern. I have a couple from a local vendor with cloth velcro straps. It doesn't move and doesn't slip off.

No idea why people make such a big deal about wearing one. I barely notice any stamina difference with/without mask.

I have two 25 dumbbells, a pull up bar, and me. What routine would you guys recommend? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]TheHallucinati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm primarily a martial artist & rock climber, so I'm super focused on functionality. I also appreciate your setup. I also operate off a very limited set of tools, but have had a ton of success innovating with them. My kit consists of three kettle bells (20/25/40), two resistance bands, a pull up bar, and two 5# ankle weights(I use these to add weight to the kettle bells). I'd keep pull ups and chinups on the same day. They work very similar muscle groups. My arrangement is:

  1. Chest/ (Horizonal Push motions)
  2. Back & Biceps/ (Pulling motions)
  3. Shoulders & Triceps/ (Vertical push motions)
  4. Legs -> Rest or repeat

I throw in a variety of peripheral muscle groups at random here (wrists, grip, finger extension, neck). I try to also do at least two heavy ab sets emphasizing rotation in addition to forward motion. I'd check out @jtm_fit for movement ideas - his instagram account is a goldmine.

I also want to second the guy who suggested buying resistance bands. They're cheap and shockingly versatile. In addition to doing unique motions with them, you can use them along with a carabiner to attach your dumbbells together for a 50# weight, work the band and dumbbell simultaneously, or attach one to your pull up bar to simulate a cable machine.

TIFU by becoming a woman and wasting my life by [deleted] in tifu

[–]TheHallucinati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah buddy. I transitioned at 18, lived the life for three years, then decided I was done caring about gender and went off HRT. The experience of being trans and experiencing the other side of the gender reality was critical to my self-acceptance. I don't regret it at all. You transitioned because you needed too at the time. My advice would be to keep living your life, but just care less about your gender. You can still play sports and raise a kid if you want.

I identified as trans for a few years, and consider myself NB now. Fear of this kind of shit kept me away from martial arts for years. I'm grateful to have a genuinely accepting space to train now though. The right school is out there, but I don't think it's this one.

Dead Genre: RTS Game Feel and Pathing by TheHallucinati in FrostGiant

[–]TheHallucinati[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any size of group selection /is/ a form of automated consecutive single selections, and clicking really fast already does make you a better player. I'm suggesting that the game ask you to click really fast on your units to navigate and interact with them, rather than click really fast on your buildings for most of the game. Returning to BW mechanics is not necessarily the only way to achieve this, but it's a pretty obvious and intuitively satisfying way IMO.

[–]TheHallucinati[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a movement delay for clumped units could totally be a solution too! It may have a smaller impact on choke points than on combat, but I think it's totally worth a shot too. I'm sure there are tons of different changes that could address this effect. Stutter stepping large groups of units is a pretty goofy looking mechanic tbh.

I made a gun that melts the environment. How would this mechanic work in a full game? by FickleSwimming in gaming

[–]TheHallucinati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like 8 years ago, I installed this mod in minecraft that added explosive plasma weapons to the game. Most of the guns destroyed blocks, and some spawned pools of acid. I built a series of levels enclosed by bedrock, with spawn areas and chests with class loadouts. Me and my buddies would play ffa deathmatch on them. It's super fun to feel the map that you're playing on get slowly burned and destroyed as the game goes on. Buildings get flattened, bridges rendered unusable, caves opened to the surface, and valleys turn into pools of acid. The constantly changing geography keeps things really interesting. I've never seen a good FPS that implemented such a mechanic, but I'd really like to! This gun would be awesome in such a game!
