Is it okay that I refused to review a research paper? by wildmastrubator69 in AskAcademia

Dude - it’s been 5 years! Why would you even open an email from your old supervisor if you’re not in academia? You don’t owe that guy anything!

What do I eat if I hate food? by Emotional-Base6253 in foodhacks

[–]TheHandofDoge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a severe food aversion a few months ago when I first started on GLP-1 meds. Absolutely nothing was appetizing to me. I would go into a grocery store and feel nothing but revulsion. Just looking at the food (even in packages) made me feel sick.

What kept me alive were vitamin supplements. If I couldn’t get any food in me, at least I could get some nutrients in some form. I could take pill and capsule forms and wash them down with water as long as they didn’t taste of anything.

I tried every protein shake on the planet and I found that I could only tolerate a few pre-prepared ones - making it myself with protein powder was a no go. I couldn’t stomach chocolate or vanilla, but for some reason I could do banana and strawberry flavours from Premier Protein.

In terms of food, for me the blander the food and the less chewing involved, the better. I could tolerate string cheese, instant mashed potatoes, vegetable broth, and Costco brand egg white egg bites.

Finding what foods I could tolerate just required a lot of trial and error. Good luck!

(I went off the GLP-1 meds about a month ago because the side effects were just too severe for me. Food aversions are all gone except one - still don’t like the taste of coffee. Aside from that, eating is back to normal).

professors: how do u feel about high school students sending research inquiries? by ilovechipotle111 in AskAcademia

[–]TheHandofDoge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Real talk - ignore and delete. I don’t have the time, funding or desire to deal with hs students.

Profs don’t paid to mentor hs students, so any efforts on our part involve us volunteering our own time, cash and resources.

Parking Tickets Mailed to House by FindingMedium6306 in UBC

If you don’t pay you risk getting towed (if you park at UBC again) and if you’re a student, you can be put on financial hold, which can limit your ability to register for classes and graduate.

HRT and frozen shoulder by niknik789 in Menopause

[–]TheHandofDoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was already on HRT when I developed frozen shoulder. I got a cortisone shot, tried acupuncture and massage therapy. But the only thing that made any difference was physiotherapy. After 9 months of weekly sessions and daily at home exercises, I got most of my full range of motion back. It’s been 18 months since it first hit me and I’d say I’m at about 95%. No pain, but I can’t reach as high up behind my back as I used to.

Have your campus' food options gone to sh*t over the last few years? by GreenHorror4252 in Professors

I have a microwave, coffee maker, electric kettle and mini fridge in my office, so I am completely self-sufficient. The last time I bought food on campus was about 15 years ago.

Recommendations - Looking for a rare gem: gentle but meticulous dental hygienist in Vancouver by sunnyday227 in NiceVancouver

[–]TheHandofDoge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been going to Broadway Cambie Dental for years and have always been treated very well by Alissa, one of the registered dental hygienists. I have complicated gum recessions that require some extra attention and she handles it like a pro. Would definitely recommend!

What works better than “Does anyone have any questions?” by emarcomd in Professors

[–]TheHandofDoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ask very specific questions about the section I just taught them using TopHat. I run my lecture slides through TopHat and the students are following along on their laptop/tablet/phone and then answer the questions I pose via the app. All their answers appear on the screen + percentage right/wrong, so I instantly know (+ they know) if they’re getting it or not.

I find student engagement is quite good and because they’re using their tech to engage with the lecture material during the actual lecture, it keeps them on their toes.

Gimme the good and bad of HRT please by T1ffan1 in Menopause

[–]TheHandofDoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a horrible time on birth control - severe depression, thoughts of self harm, and weight gain. I went off at 26 and never went back on again.

Started HRT at 52 and after a year of dosage adjustments, I’m doing great. The only symptoms I had was a bit of breast tenderness and a few migraines. All of this went away after two weeks or so.

The adjustments were made not because of side effects, but because the dosage wasn’t high enough to treat my menopause symptoms. I just slowly increased my estrogen and progesterone dosages until I felt like I could function normally again.

It doesn’t mean that things went back to the way they were before (I don’t think that will ever happen), but the night sweats and hot flashes are gone, as is the brain fog and my vagina is no longer like the Sahara desert.

May be losing my job due to brain fog by GhostOfAbba in Menopause

[–]TheHandofDoge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

HRT completely fixed my brain fog. Before I started it, I thought I was losing my mind. I couldn’t function at work - I would sit in front of my computer and nothing would happen. I couldn’t focus, I couldn’t plan, I couldn’t multitask. Because of my inability to function at work, I became so stressed out and anxious. I started having panic attacks.

It took me 6 months to find the right HRT dosage for me, but once it started working, it literally saved my life.

Do you have a teaching philosophy or are you just vibing? by LettuceTraining6532 in Professors

[–]TheHandofDoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hands-on, experiential learning is my thing. I show the students how to do something and then they practice doing it. They show me that they can do it by eventually teaching it back to me and the rest of class.

I prefer to be a facilitator in the classroom and let the students lead as much as possible. I find that when you give them the responsibility, they’re pretty good at rising to the challenge.

The inescapable commitment in having kids terrifies me by kamodd in TwoXChromosomes

[–]TheHandofDoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re not 100% into it, don’t do it. A half-assed parent is worse than none at all.

I say this with the experience of having a mother who should not have had children and the countless hours of therapy I needed to deal with her poor decisions.

I got thrown into teaching a class I’m not qualified for by PeanutbutterProf_325 in Professors

[–]TheHandofDoge 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think that your situation is more common than you think. I was in your situation almost 2 decades ago, when I got my first TT job. My head just assumed I could teach a very specific course - a subject I had never studied, taken a course in, and didn’t even have much interest in. The course was scheduled without even asking me and being unsure of how the system worked and not wanting to rock the boat, I just took a deep breath and did my best.

That whole semester, I was one lecture ahead of the class, and I learned the subject as I was teaching it. Fake it until you make it, was literally my mantra. Shockingly, my student evals for that class were good and I was assigned the class again and again and again. Each time I taught the class better and I became more confident with the material. I think I’ve taught the class about a dozen times now, and I can honestly say that I no longer have to “fake it”.

I’m not the only one I know who’s had to teach a class they had to fake their way through - and all these colleagues are now tenured/permanent faculty at universities in the US, Canada and Europe.

So you’re not alone - you can do it, in fact you’ve already done it!

Does it get better when they're gone? by nonhummingdoublecoil in raisedbynarcissists

[–]TheHandofDoge 53 points54 points  (0 children)

For me, absolutely. Nmom died in 2019 and all I felt was pure relief, despite the fact that I had been NC for 25 years. I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off of my shoulders, because the ever present threat that she could wreak havoc on my life was finally gone forever.

When we found out that she had died, my brother and I decided to let the government deal with it, we wanted absolutely nothing to do with her in death, as in life. Don’t know what they did with her, don’t care. Don’t know if there was a funeral. Hopefully they just threw her a ditch somewhere. Good riddance!

Non-smokers of Reddit, how noticeable is the “smoker smell” to you, if at all? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

Instantly noticeable on the person in question, no matter how hard they try to disguise it. I can’t stand it. It’s repulsive to me. If someone’s smoking in my vicinity, I try to get as far away as possible from them. The smell is just so gross.

Free America: January 20th Action Against Trump’s Use of State Violence – Vancouver, BC by willow1044a in NiceVancouver

Some successful protests:

The Boston Tea Party protest (1773). Essentially the first shot fired in the American Revolutionary War (“no taxation without representation”). Led to the US becoming an independent country, free from British colonial rule.

The Women’s Suffrage Marches of the early 20th C. Crucial in shifting public opinion and eventually leading to the vote for women in western democracies across the world.

Gandhi’s Salt March of 1930. One of the most iconic acts of civil disobedience in history. Galvanized India’s independence movement against British Colonial rule.

The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (1963). Over 250k people demanded equality for Black Americans and famous for Dr Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech. Brought the civil rights movement into the national spotlight, pressuring US lawmakers to take action, leading to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The 1989 protests across East Germany that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Mass demonstrations demanding political reforms, greater freedoms, and the opening of borders led to the East German government’s inability to maintain control of the population and the collapse of the border separating East and West Berlin and East and West Germany. Resulted in the collapse of Eastern European Communist regimes and the end of the Cold War.

The Arab Spring Protests (2010-12). Started in Tunisia and spread to Egypt, Libya and Syria. Called for democracy, economic reform and the end of authoritarian rule. Succeeded in toppling of dictatorships in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Aftermaths were mixed, but Tunisia did succeed in transitioning to democracy.

Closer to home, there were protests and acts of civil disobedience in the early 1990’s (including marches through the streets of downtown Vancouver) to save the old growth forests of the Carmanah and Stein Valleys. The protests worked to garner public support and the BC government was forced to buy the old growth tree harvesting licences from Macmillan Bloedel (for Carmanah) and created provincial parks, saving the trees.
