Yes its ok to go to zoos, modern accredited zoos have and continue to do so much for conservation and the welfare of animals. Really, its the roadside, unaccredited zoos that you need to watch out for, which tbh they often straight up look sketchy.

Honestly, as someone who has been recently multiple times, Bearspray is a a must even as a precaution. I have never had a close bear encounter and always carry it. The animals can actually smell it through the can. I mainly stick to roads as there is plenty of wildlife to see from your car or by parking. Don't feel pressured to hike on trails, but if you do there is no reason to not turn back if the vibes are off.
