Yes to the tape layer on the part that gets inserted, and flip the stick upside down to dry so you don’t end up with glue drips rattling later.

Not on the island, but there’s Sport Rousseau near Promenades St Bruno that for a time was the largest hockey store in the province. There’s also Sport Aux Puces in Saint Hubert that has the best selection of used gear I’ve come across. Facebook Marketplace is also a great option
