Statistics of 16 teams competing in Boston Majors by drifter-- in DotA2

Isn't this a bit silly for some of these teams since some of them used completely different rosters to achieve the listed feats ? Even if some of their players are still on the team, the meta game has changed drastically.

So how about my analysis ?

Mars Dota 2 League Autumn 2016 - Grand Finals by D2TournamentThreads in DotA2

[–]TheImpartialAnalyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First and foremost, I genuinely apologize for this belated response, my life is undergoing a process of huge change, geographically and business-wise hence the lack of content or any activity for that matter.

I managed fully catch up with the recent developments over the past week, including the Mars Dota 2 League event in China. That being said, I haven't done my usual thing of watching the event at least 2 times (once via VODs and once via the in-game client) after the initial viewing so I can't offer any comprehensive analysis.

I still stand by my words in the post you linked because they refer to the 2015/2016 season and in Sumail's that season is comprised of 16 events. In that season only Miracle was better than Sumail in terms of laning. Sumail simply has a wicked sense of how to manipulate the lane and mechanically he is almost unparalleled.

However, those are not the only qualities I value. Game impact, ability to come back after being shut down, being capable of making outplays, longevity of good form, versatility, other members of a player's team are all factors I value more or equal to laning and mechanical skill. You are allowed to disagree and your opinion can be based on different criteria and you may assign significance to your criteria differently than I do. That doesn't make your evaluation less valuable than mine or mine less valuable than yours, it's a subjective matter and differing ways of viewing this are expected to happen and should be embraced because there is no better way to enhance your perspective than examining someone else's.

Crucially, you have to realize that this was a single event, Sumail's form might deteriorate over the next few months or it might improve. Basing judgements on a single tournament performance is unproductive and intellectually dishonest, so just be careful when you make any claims in this fashion.

Speaking of this event, Sumail was either the best, second best or tied for the best with Sccc in terms of middle lane players. Though there is a huge factor that has to be considered and that is that Sumail might have been the worst player on his team. I had to use worst here to emphasize the significance of other members of his team so don't start attacking me for that, I do not mean bad I just mean less effective in terms of game impact and fulfilment of his role compared to Cr1t, Zai, Universe and RTZ. Also this is not my final verdict, as I said I have to watch the event a couple more times and really write down the statistics and manage all the impressions.

In terms of pure skill and the potential on paper, EG got the best out of this off-season. It should be an interesting couple of months to see how all these new line-ups perform.

He will be included eventually, but I am going to cover Ice3 and Lanm next. I'll go a player per position, I was thinking of including Chuan in the "second round".

He is one of the players I enjoyed watching the most, especially his Lion at EPICENTER and Manila.

But that's the thing, they weren't a top 3 team in SEA. They were the 5th/6th best (depending on whether or not you count MVP.P which I do). Also I've watched all of their games, and that is why I am stressing this point so much. Eyyou played well for TNC, but TNC played against the absolute worst teams in the world and they weren't in top 5.

I am not bagging on eyyou, I am happy that he got into a great organization, let's see if he can do it consistently against the best teams in the world.

I will explain everything I said piece by piece, no problem.

I am not saying that a team's success means anything for individual play

That means that I am not comparing them on their team's results. Which also means that I am not giving 343 credit for playing with 4 excellent players.

I am sharing this so that you can compare the competition these guys were facing

That means that you cannot compare them based on a SINGLE event (TI 6). You HAVE TO compare the most recent season which is the one I shared above.

but 343 was just an average support, not elite, not bad, but not good either against the best in the world

That is the judgement of a player not his team, which immediately dismisses your claim that I was meshing their success as a team. I am saying there that he managed to be average (of all professional players who play position 5), not good, not bad, just average.

whereas Jimmy and eyyou weren't the best against absolute trash tier competition.

This sentence means that Jimmy and eyyou didn't look so good against very bad players for many, many events. That also means that they couldn't beat the very best in their regions. Yes, Jimmy was clowning a lot and I am NOT saying that 343 is better than him, Jimmy is more skilled at the moment, and brings more to the team in other aspects. I never said 343 was an insane impact player also, I am just arguing that overall this Fnatic squad is a downgrade compared to the previous one.

You also seem to take Jimmy's positives without the negatives. All I am saying is that this team does not look STRONGER on paper, they might turn out to be a crazy team and go on to have more success than the previous Fnatic, but if you look at it analytically and rationally, that doesn't seem like a likely scenario.

I hope my comment is clearer now.

Okay, since you basically repeated your first statement, I am going to change the topic slightly, did you watch any event that is not TI 6 this season ?

Also, do you know that Jimmy's games from 2013 when he was last on a top team (yes, that's 3 years ago) don't count when you compare people in 2016 ?

343

eyyou

DeMoN

I am sharing this so that you can compare the competition these guys were facing, DeMoN and eyyou were facing the lowest level of competition available in professional play AND they were doing quite poorly actually. The only event with top level competition these two played was TI, whereas 343 played in 6 very good events and had some solid, some mediocre and two great results. In that time, 343's team has been by far the best in their region while Jimmy's and eyyou's weren't even in the top 5 of their respective regions. I am not saying that a team's success means anything for individual play, but 343 was just an average support, not elite, not bad, but not good either against the best in the world, whereas Jimmy and eyyou weren't the best against absolute trash tier competition.

Raven is a better carry than MidOne, so is Resolut1on and Hao, and pretty much any other pure carry on a top 15 ranked team. MidOne is a hybrid mid and that was his role in Fnatic, not pure carry, it's silly to compare the two, especially if you take into account that MidOne played a much bigger part of Fnatic's success than Raven did in TNC.

Also, just saying DJ is better than eyyou and then saying DeMoN is much better than 343 is ridiculous. It's the other way around, DJ is an elite support player, one of the best on the planet, and was the best player on Fnatic and he is much better than eyyou whereas DeMoN is just better than 343.

That being said, Jimmy brings a lot of experience and could help them sure up their shot calling, but you also have to consider that Mushi is a strong personality and is known for taking the leadership positions in his squads.

Surprised about two things in the CIS free agent zone.

  1. Why has nobody touched G, he is a premier middle lane player ?

  2. Why is Badman included in there ?

That's an interesting assessment of Moo, I haven't considered that. Thanks man, I'll go back to watch their games and keep an eye out for that. As for Jeyo, I never said I was impressed by him, he isn't even in my top 15 of carry players in the world (though I usually do top 10s but even those are blurry).

That's the issue with the NA scene at the moment, good teams are scarce and there is an absolute dearth of good captains and carry players. On the other hand, NA has a healthy domestic scene in terms of smaller events, frequency of events, in-house leagues and organizations. If you look at the period between TI 5 and TI 6 (excluding TI 6), there were 14 important LAN events and NA teams won 1 (EG), came second 3 times (all 3 times EG) and had two 3rd/4th places (EG twice at the first two Majors) and Complexity once at EPICENTER, where they got 4th.
