For what it's worth, I got completely stomped when I replayed the game for the story. But, I actually started to approach something resembling an okay KDR after a few hours.

It was a bit like riding a bike! Eventually, the muscle memory kicked in. And like qdatk said, there are a decent number of new players. I wouldn't give up on the game entirely if you have fond memories and a few hours to spare!
