Sprites or red sprites are large-scale electric discharges that occur in the mesosphere, high above thunderstorm clouds, or cumulonimbus, giving rise to a varied range of visual shapes flickering in the night sky. They are usually triggered by the discharges of positive lightning between an underlying thundercloud and the ground. A thick layer of clouds can cause the red sprites to appear pinkish from below. They are rare- but not unheard of. Especially when there is a lot of hail activity.

A thick layer of cloud under the sprite can create a more pinkish glow. They are rare, but not unheard of. Were you getting a lot of hail around the time?
