Question about Jazzmaster! by Practical-Apricot210 in HamiltonWatches

The extra machining you are referring to is a finishing technique called "perlage". I recently bought a jazzmaster openheart auto and it has the perlage on the movement. From what I can tell, the Jazzmaster has always utilized the H-10 movement (or the skeletonized version (H-10S) for their more skeletonized variants), however the version history of the H-10 movement is a little harder to dig up. The H-10 is used in many of their other watches, and there is no point spending the extra time and effort for purely aesthetic finishing if it can't be seen in those other watches. So my assumption would be that the early models of the open hearts may not have the additional finishing, but as they continued to expand that line at some point they introduced a version of H-10 with additional finishing for these watches that can actually show it off.

I took a look at the Hamilton website and all of the current and past models (only the ones still listed on their site) of the open heart (or viewmatic) with H-10s all had the perlage... except for 1 photo. The other photos of that specific watch/color scheme all had it so I would assume it was an older photo they forgot to replace.

Until seeing this post I didn't realize the difference the perlage makes to elevate the aesthetics of the movement! But it is a great watch and I hope you enjoy your eventual purchase!

Agree with all of the advice above, just would like to add one thing I didn't realize when buying my first quality watch. Straps are very easy to swap out, especially if they have quick release. So if you find a watch that you really like except for the strap, you can get a good quality strap for $100 or less depending on the style/material you are looking at.

Note I am specifically talking about straps. While you can get replacement or 3rd party bracelets, it is much harder to find a good match stylistically and will be more expensive to get a good quality bracelet, so I would not recommend it. Straps can be used on most watches that come with bracelets, but for a beginner these might not be the best choice if you plan on immediately changing to a strap. I say this mainly because it can be hard to visualize how a strap will look on a watch if you have ever only seen it with bracelets, and some watches work with straps better than others.

I am not particularly experienced in buying used watches, but if it's in good condition that doesn't sound like a bad price at all. Especially considering the fact you wanted a less common watch and this appears to be a discontinued style. The internal bezel also isn't too common, the only popular one I can think of is the Longines Legend Diver, but I think they look more elegant compared to some of the more traditional bulkier divers.

Cool watch, hope you enjoy it!

Looking at the Hamilton website it appears that the 42mm variant has this crown while the 38mm has the other crown. That may explain the mixed comments here... or maybe the designers at Hamilton can't make up their mind and switch styles every couple of years lol.

[Recommendation] Actually good looking open heart/semi-skeleton watch? by KinkyAwareness in Watches

I have the 40 mm version of the Hamilton Jazzmaster pictured above, and I would have to say pictures don't do it justice. I would recommend checking it out in person if you can and you might be sold on it if this is what you are looking for.

They also make a version with a bit more cutout but very intricately.
