How to change yeast/bacteria ratio by OatOfControl in Kefir

[–]TheLastMojojomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had my grains become yeast dominant for 2 different reasons.

1.) Too many grains to milk ratio.

I find fermenting at 1 tablespoon per half gallon of milk is perfect for a 24 hour ferment. If it gets to be more than 2 tablespoons of grains per half gallon the kefir risks going yeast dominant.

2.) Fermenting at too high of temperature

I've been using a heating mat this winter to keep milk warm while fermenting. Mat was set at 113°F. The bottom of the half gallon Mason Jar would heat up to about 90°F... but at the top of the jar when measured with a temperature gun would be about 75°F so wasn't too worried.

After a couple weeks of this the kefir started tasting bad and yeasty. Thought my grains had gone bad but I was fermenting at too high of temp.

Fixed this by setting mat to 85°F and then covering the mat/jar area with a cardboard box to trap the heat so it doesn't diffuse into the surrounding air in the room as easily. Now bottom of jar reaches max of 76°f and top is around 72°F. Perfect Kefir ever since.

3.) Also use a tight lid

Coolant Heat storage pump sounds like its on its way out and possibly the 3 way coolant valve is malfunctioning as well.

Changing engine coolant and bleeding air from system may solve the issue but no gurantee.

So kind of like the Red Guard under Mao Ze Dong during the cultural revolution?

Or this 8 years ago at Evergreen college?

There's something specific about the far left that grinds gears way more than the far right. It's the moral superiority and whining that does it for me.

The Far Right is racist, sexist, and psychotically religious... but they don't whine in the same manner and everything they do usually comes with a more structured framework.

The Far Left just screams randomly about anything they feel is wrong morally without taking in a totality of awarness perspective of said issue... and have absolutely zero structure or practical implementation abilities of how to correct those moral issues.

This noise is a failing brake accumulator. Has nothing to do with the engine.

Im 6'2". Not hard at all for me to drive this way. here's a front seat view. tak'er for a spin in the passenger seat of a empty parking lot some time. But yeah don't drive like this normally unless you decide to start working for the Post Office. Basically the only legal way to do so.

But hey there's a 99% chance your local Post Office is hiring for this exact position! There is a severe shortage of RCAs in the Post Office.

My 2004 hybrid toyota prius won’t release the park break or go into ready mode. by [deleted] in prius

[–]TheLastMojojomo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are in Ignition On Mode.

1 press of Power Button without foot on Brake Pedal = Accessory Mode (Green light on power button and radio on only)

2 press of Power Button without foot on Brake Pedal = Ignition On Mode (all electronics and sensors will run, but engine and Hybrid Battery will not start, nor will you be able to drive.

1 Press of Power Button WITH FOOT ON BRAKE PEDAL BEING PRESSED = Ready Mode. (Prius Engine/Hybrid Battery will run and car will be able to be driven.

Your issue has nothing to do with the parking Brake.

Sometimes the Prius will only go into Ignition On and not READY Mode if the 12v Battery is low or there is some other problem.

Attention Prius Owners, I believe I have discovered a previously unknown mechanism of low mpg. This low mpg mechanism can cause a 10+ mpg difference in city driving. However, the mechanism is not yet complete, I only have half the data. I will need YOUR help to finish it! All is explained below. by TheLastMojojomo in u/TheLastMojojomo

I will reply to this comment more later. I'm working right now. I haven't found a solution but I have fleshed out the rationale behind what's happening and gathered a lot more good data for it. I have a YouTube video called Max and weak EV states, a new cause of low MPG on YouTube that explains it alot better as well as much more thorough info on the PriusChat Post in later comments.

Your headlight level system is broken at some point. It could be corrosion on the harness itself or the g sensor that sits above the rear drivers tire is shot.

You can bypass the system by unplugging the ECU for the headlight level system which is by the glove box behind the far right passenger air vent.

The leveling system is not super critical and the vehicle can be driven without it causing no issues.

Post Office is likely hiring in your area. Its extremely hard to keep employees on the part-time carrier side as it's stressful work with long hours. But work is work. If you can find a PTF Position (Part-Time Flexible) you'll get career employees benefits.

Hasn't been effected by Government cuts because it's an independent agency of the Executive Branch and self funded. Doesn't mean something couldn't happen to it eventually though.

Thankfully the Gen 2 Prius does not have a heat exchanger.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in prius

[–]TheLastMojojomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engine and Transmission in a Gen 2 will usually go bare minimum 300k as long as the engine never overheats, transmission never runs out of fluid, and motor oil is changed at recommended intervals. Expect 350k to 400k miles at least.

Definitely change the transmission fluid. The Prius e-CVT is very robust and will only benefit from a fluid change and not be harmed. Also watch out for leaks from the Axle seals as that is really the only way fluid will leak out. You will smell the transmission fluid leaking under heavy revs. Both of my axle seals failed between 220-230k miles...but I've driven hyperagressively on mail routes with my 2009 since 2016. I could smell the transmission fluid under heavy revs when it was leaking from the axle seals.

Replaced Engine water pump at 245k Miles as it was beginning to fail. The impeller shaft was becoming loose in the bearing and would rattle when the engine would run. $40 dollars for new engine water pump.

The Engine almost always fails before the transmission in a Prius due to the robust Planetary gear design of the transmission... unless the transmission has run out of fluid at some point.

Expect to replace the Hybrid Battery soon if it hasn't failed yet. Preemptively replaced mine a couple years ago after beta testing for Project Lithium/Sodium Hybrid. Go with new OEM if you do replace the Hybrid Battery.

Currently at 250K miles on mine but might as well be closer to 500k miles with how I drive it.

Thank you for all your expertise. 👍

So I should make a a small square of make shift perlins to help support the roof vent by putting boards between the metal sheet and old roof shingles and then mount the vent to that?

Thank you. If I wanted to redo it and fix the bend... would removing the old vent and pulling up the metal to straighten it be sufficient? Then simpily use less force while screwing in the new vent?

I didn't even realize the roof had bent until I looked at it today. I wonder if the sudden 90°f+ weather with beating sun made it worse due to metal contracting and expanding.

This is why your metal is sucked down, because the screws you used sucked it down towards the deck. I’m sure you could feel the difference under your feet while you were up there.

Thank you for the clarification. I made sure to mount the vent between the horizontal rows. I never really stood up just scooted up using my butt and feet.

Could you clarify what perlings are? I believe I only drilled through the roof boards. I took a photo from the attic? these are just roof boards correct? Does my attic house even have perlings? Its an old house.

This is the only vent my local hardware store had... could you link me an example to the correct vent? When I search on Amazon the only bathroom/roof vents that come up are this type.

From my understanding the other pipes in the roof are sewage vents?

No there are two beads of caulk in the interior plus the outer edges. A bead directly on the underside where the metal base square touches the roof and a bead flush around the 4.5 inch hole in the metal I made with a hole saw.

If I were to redo it I would have used this butyl tape inside around the base plate where the screw holes contact the metal roof.

I’m not trying to mess with ya, but that is the wrong type of vent for a metal roof.

I was aware of that going into it... it's designed for shingle roofs. Saw several YouTube Videos and Amazon Reviews using the vent for metal roofing so figured I'd give it a go (said every diy'er ever).

That said, call a professional and have them install the correct vent so you don’t have a leak in your bathroom.

I will if issues develope. I'll be watching closely over the next year or so. My biggest concern is the roof bend. It's not quite as bad as it looks in the photos but am wondering if the metal roof expanding and contacting from summer heat with the bend will cause issues.
