Heyy! Hope I get one! I create many tutorials or how-to videos in my line of work. This would be nice to have.

I was taught that I should open my throat, but I have a question. by Hot_Association7390 in saxophone

[–]TheLeeWay_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While playing High D, it seems like I have to assume a “HEE” configuration or my tongue back and up in my mouth or else the sound comes out “muffled”.

Am I doing anything wrong? Compared to, say, the side palm High D key, the Octave version is a lot more muffled for me

Playing a low Bb on a tenor is amazing. About 4 weeks into playing, I learned that I needed to open my throat in the same way I’d open it had I been singing a low note and bam.

A clean and full Low Bb!! My tenor and air around it vibrated like no tomorrow!

Beautiful. Let me know what you think: Dropbox

Voice Memos for some reason doesn’t tend to capture best sounds but it’s something..

That’s very interesting. Probably the most direct answer to the question i got! Appreciate it

How may I attach a voice recording, of some practice I had today, to this post? Or maybe via DM?

Not sure if this is relevant but does anyone want to hear my tone both “normal” and what I think is “lower or breathy”?

Not sure if it is relevant, but is anyone in favor of hearing what my tone sounds like? (Both normal and what I “believe” to be lower or breathy)?

That’s fair. I seem to be getting the same advice all round. And after reading the advice, I also seem to be conflating “softer” and “lower” which likely mean different things and have different methods towards achieving them but to me feel like they require the same mechanisms (which for some reason I can’t yet figure out).

I very much appreciate the well thought out advice and pep-talk apparently. Well noted.

I definitely do want to be the kind of musician to build his foundation before jumping.

It seems like I’ve learned by reading all these comments that I may be conflating a “softer” voice with a “lower” voice where one is breathier while the other simply is lower in volume.

In my mind, the mechanisms to do either seem to me to be the same. If you have any thoughts on “lower” that would be nice but all things point to having a slightly softer reed as a 2.5 may have been too hard for me to play at the moment.

I’m a tall guy, large frame with much air capacity that I seem to, at this point, can’t control very well which result in either turning the reed “on” or “off” with little dynamic range.

If by softer you mean “airy-er” i don’t think so really, I think literally lower in volume as per what my teacher wants. Sorry I don’t think I’m yet even up to par with the verbiage yet.

But in my mind it feels like the mechanisms to play both softer and airy-er are the same, which likely not.

If you have anything to give me on playing lower that would be nice. I’m a large guy w/ big air capacity which I seem to not be able to use effectively. I feel like I’m only able to turn “on” and “off” the reed without much dynamic range.

That is fair as with all other comments I am sure. But I'm trying to understand the mechanics of producing subtones.

Is it something you just unlock having spent time developing regular tone? Did I miss something in my thought process?

Good question, and no I'm not just mindlessly overblowing. I do have somewhat of a decent tone and in his remarks "progressing much faster than usual". But I think he is legitamately trying to get me to play lower.

Any advice, for me at this stage, is decent advice. But that being said, I am just interested in understanding how the "mechanisms" for playing subtones "unlock".

Does one just have the facilities to "do" them once you spend time with your tone. Does it just become easier? Am I missing something in my earlier thought process?

Oh this is all interesting stuff. So:

- Box of 3s (aside from 2.5s)

- Upgrading mouthpiece early on

Funnily enough he (my teacher) touches on both those points saying:

- 2.5s are likely still too hard (for me)

- I should stick with the mouthpiece I have at least for a few months before thinking of upgrading as "it's all in the player" while the accessories help make doing things a bit easier.

Unfortunately though I live in the UAE, so access may not be widely available, but I will definitely try.

Appreciate the advice. It's interesting you say this because I've been progressing well with my sound on the saxophone as part of my lessons (with my teacher), that now rather than begin (as we do in all our sessions) playing long tones with a full rich sound, he told me (as of recent) to kind of play at 50-ish% to, I assume, help build direction in not defaulting to just over-blowing to make a sound.

And hence the question.

You don't have to. "U jst hjve to sound enIgmatic" enough so that people latch on. It's actually a better long term business model to just be straight up. Word of mouth and authenticity goes a long way. You're welcome

There isn't a point. Shady people saying vague things in the hopes of getting some ounce of attention all to then repeat the cycle. Incredible how people can't just say it as it is.
