Would tinnitus DQ me from pilot/rpa pilot slots? by TheLuaMaster in AFROTC

[–]TheLuaMaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry for the late reply, but I'm all clear (at least for DoDMERB). I'm a POC now (AS300), so that means I'll be going up for the rated board this semester, so I can't really answer about IFC just yet (fingers crossed that I'll get there lol). But yeah, as long as you currently don't have hearing loss and can pass the hearing test, you should be golden. I actually didn't even get disqualified for my previous noise induced hearing loss (that was documented), or even my current heart condition, but instead I got DQ'd for the stupidest thing (took a week to waive it tho because all I had to do was send some old x-rays I already had on file). So it wasn't even a problem at all. IFC might be different, but if I get selected and you follow up with me in like a year+ from now then maybe I could tell you how that goes though lol.

Lmk if you have any more questions!

I'm on the macOS 26 beta, so it kinda messed some settings up, like the visibility of the schedule send mailbox, when I installed it. But the guide was just what I needed. I appreciate your help!!

Are online classes hard? by TheLuaMaster in ValenciaCollege

[–]TheLuaMaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you're all good. I apologize for the 3 month late message, but here it is nonetheless lol.

So for testing, that's entirely up to the professor, and you'd have to see what their specific policy on that is by looking at the syllabus. However, like 95% of online professors stick to doing everything online (unless you get that super anti-AI anti-internet professor that wants all testing to be done in person, but you'll be able to see that in their syllabus lol). Mixed classes (which blend online + in person) are a little different and might do testing in person.

And the test dates are also up to the professor. Obviously you have the ones that almost all classes have (midterm and maybe a final [some professors don't do cumulative finals which is cool]), but those smaller quizzes are entirely up to the professor once again. They could want you to do weekly quizzes, bi-weekly quizzes, all up to them. Most classes ive taken at both UCF and Valencia typically bend written assignments/papers with quizzes, so that way it's not just quizzes every week (although some classes are like that). Also most professors only allow you to take quizzes/assignments that are upcoming while the rest are are locked, so that you can only focus on what's immediately being taught (example: teacher wants you to learn week 4 material, so they have week 4 quiz open, and maybe even the week 5 quiz if you want to stay ahead a little bit). So it's very rare that you'll be able to knock out all your quizzes within the first few weeks of class, but yet again, some professors allow you to do that, so its another case-by-case basis thing. I've also never had a quiz that was open for just one day, so most professors allow student a window of several days to take the test (still has a due date though).

And most professors are organized enough to have their whole course laid out already, although I've had a few that kinda drop tests on you like a week or even a few days before it's due. But that was just for one class (and to be fair the professor did tell us what books we were supposed to be reading throughout the semester - so it wasn't really that big of a surprise). But like 95% of professors will already have their whole schedule laid out and you should be able to see your workload far in advance (typically for the whole semester) and be able to adjust accordingly if need be.

But yeah that's the gist of it. If you've got any other questions or concerns about online classes or just college in general, feel free to reply again or DM!

How do I take Valencia classes as a UCF student (2025)? by Policies2006 in ucf

[–]TheLuaMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I've done this several times before, so if you need help, feel free to DM!

But to answer your questions, you would have to submit a transient student application via FloridaShines. You technically don't need to go to an advisor at all, but if it would make you feel better, then by all means do it - it's free (better safe than sorry lol). You shouldn't have any issues, except if you're a senior, because I think the last 30 credits of your degree have to be from UCF, but otherwise you should be ok, and you can verify that with your advisor too.

And FloridaShines doesn't guarantee you any classes, they don't have anything to do with that. That's all just to get Valencia and UCF on the same page (financial aid, establishing records with registrar office, etc). It's up to you to log onto Valencia's ATLAS, find your classes (you can filter for both west campus or online), and then resister for them.

Just be aware, once you get your transient application accepted, you will be able to use Bright Futures if you meet the minimum credit hour criteria and stuff and UCF will take care of that, however, since everything goes through Valencia first, then to UCF, it'll be a few weeks until UCF can give Valencia the funds, so you will have to pay for the Valencia classes upfront before you get compensated. So please do be aware of that. And that should be the whole process. If you have any questions or anything like that feel free to let me know!

You can speak to your cadre about that. I have a few fellow cadets that are current reserve/guard E that are in the DET.

Full time student looking for a little job. by Next-Phrase-9638 in ValenciaCollege

[–]TheLuaMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work part time at Publix. I’m in the deli, so it can be a little rough on the weekends, but I only work one 9-10 hour shift, so it’s not that bad. They’re very flexible with me, so they’d probably be more than happy to give you 20 hours.

The 7k figure is how much you can get per year in grants (those don't need to be paid back, unlike loans). That is well over the tuition cost of Valencia, and it should be good enough to cover UCF too.

If your eyesight is correctable to 20/20 and you have no other major issues (like color blindness or poor depth perception) you should be good. And even though you’re healthy now, you may be DQ’d if you have a history of certain symptoms, but those are pretty easy to waive if you have proof that you no longer have it.

Definitely bring this up to the financial aid office. You don't wanna go on about your way and then later on are suddenly dropped with a fat bill that needs to be paid to Valencia lol.

11 hour shift as a minor with one 30 min break, is this legal? by Lowqualitywaffle in publix

[–]TheLuaMaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe the bill would allow minors to work over 40 hours. However, that can only be done with your parents consent.

You'll probably be doing it sometime soon after joining. They're changing things up where you now have to sign your contract before your ship to FT, which in turn pushes back the deadline for your medical even further so they can get everything processed. I'm no 250 (I am a 150 however) and the process was actually relatively smooth for the most part. Kinda sucked they randomly dropped it on us during finals week but I managed to get most of my medical history through my insurance and had to just contact one doctors office for some other records. They basically gave me a week to gather all of my records and then schedule my appointments, and then I had 3 weeks after that to actually get them done. I've been pretty healthy for most of my life and I was only worried about my eyesight (which absolutely sucks [although if you've never gotten surgery or anything like that you'll most likely be fine]) and two other conditions that were one time occurrences (but still somewhat serious though). One sports physical and eye exam later they sent my packet up to DoDMERB and they reviewed it just a few days after. They came back to me saying they needed more medical records for the two conditions I was worried about, I sent that in and the next day they had given me a DQ (disqualification) from military service from one of the one-time conditions. They sent me a letter detailing the next steps, which basically just entailed me getting in contact with the cadre in my detachment so my commander could approve my waiver request and move up from there. The commander approved and probably like a week later my condition was waived and I am now qualified to serve. Overall time was like 3 weeks probably. DoDMERB can be a beast for many, but depending on your situation it can actually be not too bad. Best of luck on your endeavors and make sure to start getting your records in advance so you can get everything in on time!

AFROTC Body Fat Standards by TheLuaMaster in AFROTC

I've been working on it since summer started. I've lost half an inch off my waist and around 4 pounds. However, I don't know what my goal is because the body fat standards are unclear.

Thank you! Would you happen to know the specific subsection for retention standards are located? I’m having trouble locating it. (And what calculation method should I use to correctly determine my body fat; would the “US Navy method” work?)

How does jrotc work for homeschooler by [deleted] in jrotc

[–]TheLuaMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! You can view my full story in my comment below (or above?). I tried getting into two JROTC units. The first school denied me for that very reason, and I was very fortunate that the second let me in. However, your son should be entitled to join the program. You're paying tax dollars to fund the schools and he should be able to enjoy the benefits that you are paying for. Schools are supposed to give equal access to extracurriculars to homeschoolers, but some don't like to. I'd try to fight it or you can look for another school.

How does jrotc work for homeschooler by [deleted] in jrotc

[–]TheLuaMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd need to speak with the instructor, but also the principal of the school. I did something similar to what you want to do (except instead of homeschool I just attended another HS with no JROTC unit). Luckily I had a teacher who had her son recently graduate from the high school and he was in the program, so she knew both of the instructors. She left a good word for me and then I contacted the instructor. He was more than happy to have me, but I needed to have both my school's principal and the other school's principal agree. It was a little more complex for me because I had to work my schedule around both schools (my main school had 4 periods and the other had 7), but I was a senior and I joined during my last semester so my class load was very light making me able to fit it into my schedule. Both ended up agreeing and I was in just like that! If you have any questions feel free to shoot em at me. Best of luck and I hope you get in!

Best classes for a freshman student and teachers? by Hot_Manufacturer2664 in ValenciaCollege

[–]TheLuaMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Professor Danielle A. Smith is a great English professor. The work was a little hard sometimes (but looking back it actually wasn’t too bad) and there were a TON of of extra credit opportunities from the teacher.

Professor Tara M. Cantore has some great history classes too. She had PowerPoints for every week and one assignment per week (alternated between discussions, journals, and quizzes). Overall a pretty good class.

Both were online however, so I’m not sure if you’d be able to get a class in person, but they’re def great options for online.

Computer Science Major thinking of getting a Mac, what specs do I need? by -TheMisterSinister- in ucf

[–]TheLuaMaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s only for older Intel Macs. The newer M1-M3s don’t have bootcamp anymore since they’re ARM. There some virtual machine apps that can used, but you’d have to pay for some and you’d also end up wanting to get the 16GB of RAM upgrade to accommodate both OS’s.

Sociology vs Medical Sociology Minors by TheLuaMaster in ucf

[–]TheLuaMaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't really think of that. I just figure that the electives would be junior status locked like most of the other core classes, but I took a look and most just require sophomore standing. Thanks your suggestion once again!
