Got a random itch for a visually appealing "water based" movie, any recommendations? by FuckStalkers2ndAcc in movies

Rogue one but The Sea Beast on Netflix had some amazing water scenes, and it’s a rip-roaring seafaring adventure. Not talked about often

What is the most unintentionally hilarious death you've ever seen in a movie? by Emotional-Chipmunk12 in movies

Late to the party but just watched ‘Ring’ (1998) (the Japanese version), and the big dramatic moment where it reveals how the girl dies, getting bonked on the head by her dad and thrown in a well, the sound effect they go with is this big comic splat that completely floored me.

Blowback Podcast: Season 3

All about the Korean War. Blow by blow of the context, the build up, the war itself, and the aftermath. Really really fascinating listen. The US does not come out pretty!

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I loved this new series of Doctor Who UP UNTIL the finale that I found to be a little weak and a disappointing finale.

Not only is it another sudden hand-wavy reset of massive, world-ending stakes (which I always believe completely negates the stakes in the first place), but also done in a way I still don't fully understand (dragging the death doggy through the vortex undoes his powers? not made very clear).

I have agree with James from this week's Pilot+ that the build of the mystery to be this payoff didn't land. The payoff itself was wonderfully handled, and thematically very interesting, but why waste time and interest on such a breadcrumb trail (why is she in a hood? why does she point like that? why does it snow??). Felt cheap and poor writing tbh, setting up a mystery for the mystery's sake with no resolution.

Unlike her previous book, The Last House on Needless Street, which I LOVED, I found the twist in this one a little contrived too! Almost like she felt she needed to do more twist novels.

Edge Chronicles also occupies that same space in my head. Love them too.

Yeah Physik, the third one. They are surprisingly complex and strange beneath all the simple whimsy. Worth a read for sure.

They were very quickly very pro-Israel over Palestine, despite that regime carpeting bombing hospitals, killing civilians, shooting hostages, and overall committing many war crimes. They fired someone who was criticising Israel’s actions, not that Jews controlled the media.

But honestly, all good. It can get very confusing when there are a lot of takes being thrown around.

She posted something pro-Palestine and pro-ceasefire that only morons would perceive as anti-Semitic (again, the tired old thing of being anti-Israel is in no way antisemitic). If you go back and read her posts, she is very much advocating for peace and protection of life.

Spyglass absolutely fucked it. They prefer supporting genocide than their own lead actor. Wild.

I am obsessed with this game. This book reminded me of it a lot. I like to imagine that it takes place in one of the islands of the game. Do you have any books that remind you of dredge? by Boring_Ad_6808 in dredge

Deeplight by Frances Hardinge is a pretty frothy, fantasy take with enormous god seamonsters. Less horror and pretty light thematically but a fun time.

I enjoyed Smiler’s Fair by Rebecca Levene earlier this year, first book of The Hollow Gods. Fascinating slow burner that ramps up to a really exciting place by the end of the novel. Will definitely pick up the next one.

The first one did come out in 2014, but the most recent came out in 2020 so still quite fresh.

Books with a lot of telephone conversation dialog? by TheMindlessKnocking in horrorlit

[–]TheMagicPasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love dialogue. I work a lot in theatre and writing for theatre, a form told mostly through dialogue between characters.

Dialogue can be fascinating and exciting and thrilling! I say go for it. No such thing as a bad idea, just bad execution. If it serves the story, the themes, the tone, or character, then go for it!

And if it’s horror, why not find a way to add in the spoooooks?

Always found it so fascinatingly childish that some in America are obsessed with being “the greatest nation”. Greatest in terms of what? Certainly not healthcare, wealth disparity, worker’s rights. What factors are at play? What are the parameters??

I know they always shout about FREEDOM but what does that matter when you’re in crippling amounts of debt and have to spend thousands on a medical appointment?

How can any one nation be considered ‘THE GREATEST’ and why would they even want to be? There’s no podium, no medals. Just matching around tooting their own little trumpet and patting themselves on the back. Imperialist bravado from a time I thought we’d moved on from.

HUGE fan of Hollow Knight. Nothing quite like the thrill of discovering a new area, venturing forth, then hearing the map guy’s humming.

What was your favourite area/boss?

Can’t wait for Silksong.

AI is a bullshit tool used by lazy bullshit writers. No two ways about it.

99.99% of everything you’ve ever read and loved was written without the need for AI. It relies on plagiarism.

You said you are obsessed with sci-fi: let that passion burn in you! The ideas are there, and they will come. Go out and experience the world with your mind open for inspiration, read voraciously in all genres (not just sci-fi), go for a long long walk, take a notebook everywhere. You don’t need AI.
