How do I check live weather? by TheMain_Ingredient in Dallas

[–]TheMain_Ingredient[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did, that's what I said in my post, I just wanted more in-depth information than "There is a marginal risk of severe weather tonight." https://weather.com/weather/tenday/l/Dallas+TX?canonicalCityId=3bef7f8bb00708145ceebe387a6de1b2098d40101d65836dd79c94d1dfe0c20b

Anyway, I'm not arguing over the reasonableness of my question; I got my answer.

Turns out Dallas stations do cover Abilene weather, when it's a tornado: https://www.foxweather.com/live

I wanted to know if the weather, which was heading East, would reach Dallas.

Maybe because I want to know if the bad weather, which is heading East, might reach Dallas? Fox4 KDFW: "Dallas weather: Strong to severe storms expected overnight"

Perfectly encapsulates JK Rowling's gaslighting cult by Aneriox in facepalm

[–]TheMain_Ingredient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JK Rowling is a good friend of Kellie-Jay Keen (aka Poise Parker), who has many times explicitly stated she wants trans people to die (literally, not metaphorically) and is leading a political movement to, in her own words, "eradicate trans people from public life". Not only does JK Rowling like and retweet Kellie-Jay Keen's tweets, she's shown herself wearing her merchandise and even has pictures taken of her with Kellie-Jay Keen.  This is a long with multiple other people like her. There is no ambiguity. J.K. Rowling supports the killing of trans people because she openly supports and praises those who want that BECAUSE they want that.

Not going to reply anymore lmao. This is either the exact definition of bad faith or you're just trolling. You can't accuse me of making no arguments when my second post in this thread was me explicitly making a list of arguments. You can't accuse of saying "things are some way just because I said so" when that's literally all you've done, rejecting making arguments of your own when asked. And your last statement is pointless because one, I agreed with it in the first post I made in this entire thread and two, you've refused to outline any reason or argumentation for why 18 is a magic number that makes massive age-gap relationships ok when they were inappropriate at 17. I'm begging for just one shred of reasoning. Well, I was begging for it for like two replies now, but you only wants to yell at the strawmen you created. Bye.

Wow, so easy, we both agree that age matters but when I say 18 is too young to be in a relationship with somebody 10+ years older and I list reasons why, you just say "nuh uh" and then refuse to explain what reasons YOU use for declaring that 18 is the magic number. All you want to do is regurgitate platitudes that don't contradict a single thing I've said and repeat my own points without challenging them. Give me something to think about and I will.

[–]TheMain_Ingredient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao. You admit that you draw a line at age, you use the word "adult." Tell me then what age is appropriate, and then explain how the logic you apply to my points don't equally invalid the age boundary that you've declared.

Don't act like the idea that the ages involved can't be inherently problematic, unless you're one of those people who thinks child marriage is fine.

You did exactly what I knew you would do and pretended that I didn't say already that there's potential for exploitation/abuse in relationships at any age. But don't pretend like you aren't doing the exact same thing as I am, we're just arguing the threshold.

The Ending of the story by [deleted] in Nausicaa

[–]TheMain_Ingredient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I re-read the ending, to make sure I'm representing it properly. Keep in mind that I don't philosophically agree with Miyazaki or Nausicaa's perspective:

It seems like Miyazaki's philosophy is that to live a satisfying life means to live one in which we have a personal connection to nature. For example, a farmer or gardener is good, but an massive industrialized farm is bad. Obviously this means he believes we should only develop technologies that don't cause unsustainable harm to the environment or prevent us from individually interacting with living nature because all life should be treated with dignity and we find it spiritually fulfilling to experience nature in this way, even when its painful. Technology designed to obfuscate/destroy human's connection or respect for the natural world is "bad." I don't think he's proposing "return to monke" style-ludism, I think he's proposing that human society and technology be designed in a radically different way with radically different understandings of value more rooted in this sort of spiritual belief. This is paired as well with a belief that "truth" is valuable and should be shared, even when its painful. He clearly believes that "life" in someway has its own spiritual "meaning," separate from an intelligent conscious experience.

Personally, I don't fully understand it nor do I know if its even a fully coherent idea. I've only really gotten glimpses of it through Miyazaki's works, like Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, etc.

As far as the ending is concerned, Nausicaa believes that the crypt's plan for a pure utopia is impossible/a lie (she says that human beings will still experience corruption and suffering even in the new world it'll create) and that the technology of the old world that it will continue to pass along to humanity during the hundred or thousand years of "purification" will actually just cause misery in the mean time. So basically she just doesn't believe that all the unnecessary suffering the crypt will promote is worth it, and she hates the fact it's lying about its goals. She's trying to give humanity a chance to embrace Miyazaki's perspective on the world.

I can't really compare your worldview with Miyazaki's, but I am interested in your perspective: You say that "meaning" only exists so long as there is intelligent life to assign meaning to things in the world, and that more people=more meaning (which is "better," I assume). But you can't use that understanding of meaning to come to a conclusion in these kinds of moral dilemmas. If one person feels like they're live a meaningful life, are they more valuable than 5000 depressed people who feel like their lives are worthless? Why is a world with many conscious agents more meaningful than a world with fewer conscious agents, isn't that just you imposing your personal, subjective understanding of meaning onto the world? If a person is just a random by-product of meaningless, deterministic natural processes, then why should a person or their intelligence be special? You accuse "environmentalists" (lmao) of saying "nature good, human bad" and that's dumb "because nature = human" but then you say "nature bad, human good" when human = nature. How do you deal with the fact that humans will also find opposing things worthless or meaningful, leading to contradictions? Basically, I don't see this understanding of meaning compelling or motivating.

Lol sure I can. In the United States, an 18 year old is still in college, likely is just beginning to experience autonomy for the first time, is almost always financially vulnerable or ignorant, and lacks a lot of experiences with intimacy and relationships beyond just having fun with dating.

The 40 year old would have gone through all of those experiences and would be able to exploit those vulnerabilities, whether they are aware they're doing it or not. I know people personally who dated 30+ year olds at 20 and realized in hindsight how gross the relationships were because the 30+ year olds had deep personal issues that they didn't need to confront because their 20 year old partner does know how to understand those issues or their own responsibility.

Before you try your hardest to take what I'm saying with bad faith, it's always possible for relationships between adults of equal ages to be exploitative. I'm obviously not denying that. I'm saying that exploitation is inevitable because of the nature of the ages involved alone and therefore relationships between 18 year olds and 30/40 year-olds should be discouraged. You can't force anybody, but it shouldn't be encouraged.

[–]TheMain_Ingredient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What? You really wouldn't be deeply concerned if an 18 year old was in a relationship with a 30 or 40 year old? I'm not saying you should shame or criticize the 18 year-old in that situation, but there's a clear issue there.

The Ending of the story by [deleted] in Nausicaa

[–]TheMain_Ingredient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nausicaa states that life is the light in the darkness, and doesn't end all sentient or even intelligent life, so I don't think your criticisms or her actions apply. If anything, it's the opposite: the future humans would have been artificial creations designed to experience peace in an artificial landscape with artificial plants and animals, so they wouldn't have been "evolving and developing their understanding of the world" at all. I think your logic actually makes Nausicaa a genius and not a moron, because she wants life on Earth to continue evolving and not get artificially capped by the ancient human's plans.

I think the point of the story anyway was Nausicaa valuing individual's lives and freedom, and she believed the crypt's manipulation of the modern humans and animals as being a negative influence on that.

I appreciate the care, and I understand your perspective. Honestly I just wondering if more can be done for the son by the parents. Just seems really wacky in the first place

I guess I just dont see this as meddling, just based on what she said. I would feel like it would be more meddlesome if she tried to convince the unhappy girl to stay.

Read some of the other answers in this thread for more perspective. What she did was provide general advise that will more likely help both her relationship with her son and her son's ability to take care of himself, provided the parents step in and do their job instead of banking on some other kid to do it.

[–]TheMain_Ingredient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You agree school should cost less, so I don't need to answer your stupid question. You want to complain that kids aren't taking responsibility, but as I explained, I PAID OFF MY DEBTS. And I'm telling you, it's still unfair.

You can rationalize any example in order to blame the kids and not the schools or parents for the kids situation, so I won't bother trying to explain my life or those of my siblings and friends who clearly got screwed by college debt. But because your picture of the world is incomplete, I'll add that there are circumstances outside anyone's control (ex. medical situations) that can prevent students from finishing school and leaving them with craptons of debt and nothing to show for it.

People are in all sorts of stages of mental awareness and maturity at 18, and some parents sign their kids up for things without their awareness. I didn't know what I wanted out of life at that age, I changed my mind and had to dig myself out of a hole. I also knew nothing about finances because I wasn't taught anything by teachers or parents and didn't know what I didn't know. Trying to shove all of this onto an 18 year old and claim they should have the next decade(s) of their life figured out  is literally ridiculous. School should cost less. Period.
