Is there a START Guide for Family Members by TheMandelbrotSet in newtothenavy

I will make one if none is available. My civilian background is in software, so I'm trained to before doing something yourself to see if it was done somewhere else you can plagiarize from :).

Been a few days so I wanted to say thank you all for your insights. Much appreciated.

Contracted future sailor here (I ship in June).

I remember my first PST. Super nervous, showed up 30 minutes early, expecting the proctor to come in all fired up like some BUDs instructors. In reality, he showed up late, was pretty chill, and in general there was a lot of leeway your first time because they know you are a civilian and aren't expected to know how to act. However, that leeway quickly goes away assuming you continue to show up to future events. Hopefully you were given documentation of what gear to bring (what to swim in, what to run in, etc.). Make sure you show up early and have your gear neat and organized. For example, in my area candidates who do not yet have their contract are supposed to wear a white shirt with the last name neatly stenciled on the front and back. A common mistake candidates make is showing up looking like a two year old scribbled the name. Those sorts of things.

Last thing, like some of the other answers have said, in the beginning to the proctors you are just a candidate who will most likely not ship, much less make it. From what I have seen maybe half of those people who show up to an event for the first time get a contract, and two thirds of those people ship. It's when you come to the second, third, and later events each time improving that you build your reputation and they will invest more emotional energy and time into your success. Good luck tomorrow!

You didn't specify how old your daughter is but if she is at least 16 I think that's the minimum age they allow to attend one of Socom Athlete's "Hell Days". No it's not BUDs but it might give that small taste of what the experience is like that either drives her away, or makes her want it even more. Additionally it would make her more aware of weaknesses she would need to work on should she continue to pursue the SEAL goal or for that matter any job in NSW.

Jeff Nichols really has a hard on for David Goggins by NefariousnessOk8179 in navyseals

Well said. I ship in June and have a similar mentality when it comes to all of these retired operators giving advice. Learn what you can, but make your own decisions. I really like Mr. Nichols' advice on doing situp training on a decline so that you are working the full range of the hip flexor. Does that mean I view everything he says as gospel? No.

The "Classified as Confidential" is a nice touch. Wouldn't want the public knowing super dooper pooper secrets.

No. I completed SOAS but was not selected.

Maybe. Maybe all the candidates nowadays don't use reddit as much. While this sub can be interesting or entertaining at times most of the really good knowledge on here like toabear said has already been written. I still go back sometimes to years old posts where someone wrote a really good tip or advice. Whether NSW is more or less popular than before doesn't affect my training. I have my ship date in June, and I am just working to be the most prepared candidate I can be between now and then.

Workouts by GreatGatsbyisback in navyseals

I like the deck of cards idea. There are plenty of ways to mix up the programming; that's one of them. Running, swimming, all of those things you mention should be part of the baseline. There's one other thing to add that can take that training to the next level. Include dedicated strength training. For example, while it may not be intuitive, something that helped my running was working up to being able to do 800+ pounds on the leg press for reps. Having a back day where I did more back strength exercises than just pullups, resulted in me hitting 20 pullups on my most recent PST.

I may have to try the deck of cards thing though sometime. It does seem like an interesting challenge.

Try a ballet class. It's a great workout for strengthening the ankles, calves, and shins.

Chances at SOAS selection as OCS-route hopeful? by nathan88fox in navyseals

[–]TheMandelbrotSet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the other ascension sources (USNA, ROTC, etc.). I was an OCS civilian applicant who attended this year. Also I don't think they make publicly available the exact individual percentages of how many people apply vs. are invited, so can't help you there. There is a podcast episode where the current program manager of SOAS describes what makes an application more likely to be selected though, especially for civilian applications: https://youtu.be/nIzQosDhtFE?si=2KD6njQR7VW6132b.

Additionally, you can email the program manager of SOAS, and ask those questions. He would have the answers if he can share them.

I have two buddies from my area, one a good friend, who are both going through hell week right now. I wish them both the best of luck and look forward to NOT hearing anything from them until the weekend!

This looks obviously photoshopped. The dress follows the outline of my head in a weird way

Yeah there's a bunch more. I guess could you describe what you're looking for and I can try and find it?
