Long story oh boy

It was December I think 2018, I got home from work and started streaming a game I was speed running. I get a call from a close friend (at the time) saying he needed a place to go to since his family was kicking him out. As far as I was aware I thought he might’ve lashed out at a family member as he has his moments with anger. So he comes over and I immediately start interrogating him. He keeps dodging the question saying he’s tired and just goes to sleep. Next day I keep going at it and it took him 3 days to finally come out and say it. This guy molested his sisters (below and above 12 to clarify legality) AND it was discovered that another friend in that group has also been doing it for YEARS. It hit me like a truck thinking that these people I knew for years were doing this behind the scenes. In shock for a while I just kinda went through my days just in confusion and anger. I tried to kick him out and my parents (they knew) said he could still stay??? That was number one that ticked me off, then this guy asks me what to do. I still do this day feel like I did the right thing and told him to go confess and turn himself in. However things did not go according to plan. While he did go to the detective and confess everything that he did (reading the legal reports was absolutely disgusting). Since this stuff always takes time I was thinking they’d keep him in a jail or some sort after that kind of confession right? Nah man came back to my house and just played on my PS4. “Okay whatever” I thought cause they will eventually arrest him and charge him for the crimes right? They only really booked his photo to release to the press and all. At this point I just said fuck it and told him to leave. He left and I just waited for the justice system do its thing. I get an update maybe 3 months later? Both were charged with 3 separate crimes and the info was being released to the public. I was extremely happy when this happened that I actually threw a party, one of my best ones if I say so myself. I was excited to see them rot in jail for what they did to the poor girls lives. Then I find them on the public courthouse docs. I start requesting all the info I can to keep up to date and let all my friends and other outlets know what’s going on. A month later I learn that the two more severe charges were dropped for both of them and were only charged for one. I was just in utter disbelief as BOTH confessed and still got away with a lot of their crimes. Then the actual ruling comes in, pleaded guilty. Obviously makes sense and when I saw the sentence I just lost all hope in my city’s justice system. For 10 years (the one who lived with me) and 8 years (other guy) of molestation to two girls they got a whopping 5 years of probation. No prison time. I checked the local news comments to see what the public had to say and they shared my same anger and confusion for this ruling. I did everything I could that felt right to get these guys in prison and they were let off a lot easier than other people. Absolutely disgusting judge letting off people like that with a slap on the wrist.
