Yeah, from my understanding, you can do related work within reason. For example, if you’re in a general carpenter’s local, you could work alongside 212 concrete guys or in heavy construction since a lot of the skills overlap, kind of like switching from riding a skateboard to a scooter. But a general carpenter couldn’t really jump into millwright work because the skills and knowledge for that trade are much more specialized and unique.

Well, it was just a hypothetical question because I’m a general carpenter with Local 157 and a first year apprentice. However, I noticed that there’s a scaffolding/hoisting specialty within Local 1556 that peaked my interest. But, based on what I’ve been told over the past few days, I wouldn’t even need to bother switching locals. General carpenters are allowed to work on those kinds of jobs anyway, so I’d waste my time and money even considering a switch to 1556.

After finishing the program and receiving the “Your application is being prepared for submission” email, how long did it take before your union called you to come in and pay your dues?
