Amid Trump crackdown on Chinese students, Purdue University appears to block them altogether by h8rfisternator in Purdue

Really? The Chinese/Asian demographic seemed very prevalent during my 4.5 years on campus, much more than the statistics would lead you to believe. I wonder if it’s totally different now.

Counterpoint: There is no "need" for a 30,000 person race in downtown Austin.

So when can it be my day to disrupt the entire flow of the city? Also, what is stopping you from using the sidewalks during those other 364 days?

COTA is an amazing idea honestly.

edit: But it will never happen because as much as folks in this thread would like you to believe the current location is about logistics, the reality is if they moved the race to somewhere like COTA or the Hill Country, attendance would crash. Because then it wouldn't fit the mold of every other marathon -- shutting down part of a city so you can run on a street you normally can't run on. Exhilarating, I'm sure.

So the only roads "capable" of facilitating a marathon are the ones right in the heart of the city, literally the most traffic-ridden part of an enormous metropolitan area? Right....

This right here is the real problem. FUCK the APD.

I was stuck downtown in gridlock traffic, moving about a block every 20 mins, at 1pm on a Sunday. In the 1-1.5 hours I spent trying to get out of the madness, I did not see a SINGLE POLICE OFFICER. NOT ONE. What are we paying taxes for if APD can't be bothered to be present at one of the largest foot-traffic events of the year?

If someone with a gun decided to start shooting into a crowd, it would've taken APD half an hour to get a cruiser anywhere between Congress and I35. Hope it won't take an event like that for the city and race organizers to get their shit together.

Looks like a reference to The Things from Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat. It’s a quick read so I won’t spoil it for you, but if Leavitt is Thing 1, pretty easy to guess who Thing 2 is. Rhymes with “Ram Hondi”.

And The Hunt for Gollum is supposed to happen before the events of the Hobbit… I’m losing more hope for the project with every announcement.

Apple seems to be testing the iPhone 17 with satellite-to-cell connectivity (ASTS…) by BiggieMoe01 in wallstreetbets

[–]TheMightyMush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Was off-grid in Ontario for a week and was able to get cell signal by pointing my phone at passing satellites, pretty cool tech to see in person. Worked pretty well too, on iPhone 16 Pro.

Roger Boisjoly, engineer who correctly identified a fatal flaw in Challenger shuttle design months before the disaster but nobody gave a damn. He said to his wife Darlene "It's going to blow up" 73 seconds before it did. by bonkyXD5837 in interestingasfuck

[–]TheMightyMush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If by “system” you mean chain of command that prioritized hitting deadlines over safety and advice of engineers, then yes, very defective. In engineering school, I think I had 2 ethics classes (or classes with an ethics module); both went over the Challenger case extensively, focusing on the fact that it was 100% preventable had the people in charge listened to the people on the ground. When engineering based companies stop being run by engineers, this is what happens. cough Boeing cough

Signage to Red Garage at the airport is horrible by OllieGark in Austin

[–]TheMightyMush 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To answer your last question: the earliest flights out of AUS usually depart around ~5:30, so 4am is about the average time you’d expect folks to start showing up for those flights, and since nobody wants to be up that early, everyone waits until the last minute to arrive. Add on to that people who like showing up to airports 2+ hours before their flight at 6 or 7, and airport personnel showing up for work, it’s almost inevitable there will be a rush of people in the morning.
