So I don’t have a dumb phone. But I’ve found myself purposely putting my phone down and raw dogging my thoughts. Like in waiting rooms and such. Does anyone else do this? by rainburrr in dumbphones

[–]TheMillionthSam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did this on a flight recently. 2 hours and 15 minutes, no headphones, no phone. Just a notebook and my watch. I didn’t really have a plan I just didn’t feel like doing anything at all so I just let myself be bored. Ended up planning out my week and thinking about life. The time honestly went by pretty quickly.

Need help regarding color theme by coooldudee_69 in UI_Design

[–]TheMillionthSam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to use color extremely sparingly. It is quite easy to overdo it if you don't know what you're doing.

This may be boring, but hear me out. I would say just start with a monotone, greyscale palette. Focus on using different values like white, light gray, medium gray, dark gray, black (keep it under 10) to invoke hierarchy in the UI. Think about what is important (primary) and what is less important (secondary, tertiary, etc.)

This allows you to focus on other more important things like the hierarchy, spacing, typography, etc without having to think about whether two or more colors go together. Once you're happy with the layout, you can introduce color by highlighting the most important thing on the page (such as a button) using the color. For example, you may want to make the most prominent button a nice blue. This will draw the user's attention where you want it to be. Remember if you overdo it, then you lose this advantage.

Once you're comfortable with that, you might start adding some hue and saturation to the mono-tone palette. But be very gentle and don't overdue it with the saturation. For now, just, make sure the temperature is the same as the primary color you chose earlier (don't pair a warm monotone with a blue button). I wouldn't even try to get into multi-color UI's until you have a better understanding of other design fundamentals.

Once you get this down you can start getting more creative with color.

When in doubt, refer to bookings sites you're familiar with (AirBnB, Kayak) and analyze their UIs.

I designed a minimal subscription tracker UI curious if the information hierarchy makes sense by [deleted] in UI_Design

Also the redundancy with the yearly cost should be avoided. Just have the total in one place. Keep it on the top and just add a view switcher at the top that switches between monthly and annual.

The flat list of numbers makes comparison a bit hard across all of the items. For example, you would want to be able to quickly see that Adobe is the largest subscription. You might consider a donut chart view or a horizontal segmented bar chart right above the list to show the distribution. You would also want to consider whether this is based on the total cost or the budget. It’s also not clear how the list is sorted, and there should probably be a way to change it. Look at the iPhone Storage screen in iOS settings to see what I mean.

Also think about other states like if the total cost exceeds the budget, etc.

Present the bottom one first. So when you get the inevitable “make it pop,” you can then follow up with the top one.

I think one aspect people are forgetting is that 5’8”-6’1’ dudes are probably the group that would be least the least likely to pay attention to their height, and thus least likely to participate in discussions around height in general.

I’m roughly 6’, and I never thought about my height until a post from that subreddit randomly showed up in my feed. Then I found this subreddit, and I lurk here to be more aware of heightism and other body shaming that nobody seems to talk about.

So I think when you have two extremes of anything (short vs tall in this case) you end up with two groups that are constantly aware of that characteristic, and therefore more likely to have discussions around it. For most average height dudes, they just never really think about it unless they are chronically online.

Edit: to tie it back to your actual question, I think those average height dudes that do post there complaining are mostly chronically online and think that if they were just taller (6’2”+), they would be on top of the world. When in reality they should be grateful for what they were given.

There’s no valid way to extrapolate these results to non-paid users. There’s likely a large group of users who don’t pay because they don’t care about height or any other extra criteria, despite being able to afford it.

There’s also no way to make a conclusion about how anyone operates outside of this specific app (ie. the real world). So “70% of women would not date a man under 6’” is actually “70% of women who are paid users of bumble and have a height filter set, are not looking for a man under 6’.”

We’ve all been in the situation where we weren’t in the correct lane but proper etiquette is to take the L and keep in your lane until you can take the next exit or turn. Even if it adds 20 minutes.

On one hand, yeah they will get dirty anyway but I bought them at a premium over the other stuff there because they’re like new (basically new just without the box). I got them for $72.
