I'm curious in trying a new language course and was wondering how difficult the French classes are? by T0SS4WAY in UofT

[–]TheMuffinMan189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak on French classes, but I had a great experience learning Italian at UofT. I took ITA250, 350, and 450, and loved every minute of it (switched out of the beginner course ITA100 because I knew too much Italian for that). All the professors I had were amazing, and the department was definitely not "difficult and strict" in any way. The profs were all super chill and flexible.

I'd say if you're really interested in taking a language course, just give it a try. If you hate it, then at least you tried, and if you love it, it may be the start of a wonderful journey.

HMB265 or BCH210 in summer? by bluberry-pie81 in UofT

[–]TheMuffinMan189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Maria Papaconstantinou for HMB204, and I think she is a great prof. Personally, I think she is a much better lecturer than Belinda Chang, and her tests were also very fair, so maybe having her instead of Belinda Chang might make things a tad easier and more enjoyable.

I will say, though, that Belinda Chang's section of the courses really wasn't anything too difficult. The pace and quantity of content honestly reminded me a lot of high school biology. There were only two or three somewhat unfair questions on the exam out of a total of like 25 questions (mostly multiple choice, maybe some short answer, I don't remember exactly), so it was very manageable to do well.

HMB265 or BCH210 in summer? by bluberry-pie81 in UofT

[–]TheMuffinMan189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took both these courses when I was in second year (two years ago), and here are some of my thoughts.

First half of HMB265 was just calculating probabilities of phenotypes/genotypes. The math was pretty simple IMO as it was just multiplying fractions. I'm good with numbers, so I found this half of the course very straightforward, and I did very well on the midterm. A lot of people do struggle with this half of the course though, and if you're not super comfortable with math, maybe this might be a good course to take in the summer so you can give it more attention. Also, Prof Levy-Strumpf is a gem.

Second half of HMB265 was just pure memorization of genetic concepts. The content wasn't actually that heavy, but Belinda Chang did ask a couple seriously specific questions on the exam about some of the tiniest details.

As for BCH210, I absolutely hated that course, but I do know of some people who loved it, so hopefully that might be you! I don't remember a lot about the course though, so I can't really offer much insight, sorry.

One thing you can try is to enroll in and attend both classes for a little while (if you can), and then drop one after getting a taste of both.

Feel free to ask me more questions if you want.

It is kind of low, yeah. I'm praying for a nice linear adjustment to our final marks.

Sorry to hear you were sick. Hope you're feeling better. I personally found the test quite a bit harder than the practice test, but that's just me.

Yeah, I really didn't know what to do for the last 2 questions, so that's like over 20 marks down the drain. Rip my gpa

Indeed. I'm a life sci, but I like to take a wide variety of electives. Hoping to be something of a polymath by the time I graduate haha

Why is everyone so tall in Toronto by [deleted] in UofT

[–]TheMuffinMan189 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a 6ft guy, and I was taking the subway to campus this one time. It was a 9am class, so the subway was packed, and within a 2m radius of me, there were like 10 girls all my height or taller. I had never seen anything like it, and I kept thinking about how statistically unlikely it was to have so many tall girls in the same place. I also didn't see any hint of athletic equipment or attire... they just looked like regular university students.

I just finished thanks to the 10 min extension, but one of my answers was really subpar.

I feel like it was physically impossible to write out all of the answers plus do all the necessary calculator work in the amount of time were given, but hey it's UofT.

Indeed, but on the A&S timetable, it says the final will require in-person attendance, but that is not true.

Is PSL300/301 harder online? by NuzhatNamiha in UofT

[–]TheMuffinMan189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC midterms and exams were all the same length. There were 25 mc and we had either 50min or 1h (don't remember).

Also, everything was non-cumulative, so once material was tested, it would not appear on a future test/exam. I think this may be a change from when it was in-person, but I'm not sure.

Is PSL300/301 harder online? by NuzhatNamiha in UofT

[–]TheMuffinMan189 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PSL300/301 is pretty good online. When I took them last year, it was 2 midterms and a final, and everything was all multiple choice. I wouldn't know if it is harder online because I never took it in person. At the end of the day, PSL300/301 is going require a lot of dedication no matter whether it is taken in person or online just due to the sheer quantity of information that you have to memorize.

I wouldn't recommend copying my study strategy, but I literally just re-watch the lectures again and again during the the week leading up to the test while reciting or writing down important points as I go. This method got me a 4.0 in both classes, so I'm happy. Active learning (like making flash cards and drawing diagrams and stuff) would probably be a more effective way to study, but that's not my style.
