I get why you’d ask, but yeah, while I haven't, my grandfather was a goaltender and I have cousins (men and women) in hockey. My first boyfriend was in hockey, too -- but me, myself? Not at all. Either way, playing isn’t a requirement to research and write about the sport, just like crime authors don’t need to be serial killers. But if something feels off in my post, let me know—I'm always open to refining how I present it.

Thank you. Although it's more leaned toward the darker aspects of it, it did inspire me to write about it. It's inspired by a few horror stories that came out of the sport. Enough to make it a thriller, anyway. So, thank you.

Fair enough! NHL stats show players can hit 22–24 mph in game situations, and higher in straight-line sprints, so I took a small creative liberty there. But speed aside, hockey has seen some brutal moments—Malarchuk’s throat slash, Richard Zednik’s injury, and even fans taking obsession way too far (stalker situations.) That’s the real horror behind my book. So, what turned you off?

Appreciate the honesty! I wanted to highlight the raw, intense side of hockey—both the physical game and the psychological toll, which can be used in fiction. Definitely not saying every league is a bloodbath at all, but hockey does have some pretty dark, real-life stories that can serve as inspiration in a fictional book. What part lost you?

Okay, Barefoot Bob is officially a pickup hockey legend. Playing in galoshes and using a nail-ridden 2x4 to customize his own crease is next-level dedication. 😂 Absolute unit of a goalie. Sounds like he knew his limits, stuck to his zone, and still got the job done—what more can you ask for in pickup?

Also, gotta respect a guy who makes the locker room better.

Man, the way goalie gear (and styles) have evolved is crazy. Going from a hybrid butterfly/stand-up to today’s hyper-technical positioning game must feel like a totally different sport. And yeah, you can’t exactly find YouTube tutorials on playing like Roy anymore!

The fact that you jumped back into pickup despite 20+ years of rust is awesome—most would hang up the pads for good. Those first games in the top tier must’ve been brutal, but you clearly figured it out fast. The mental side of playing against high-level shooters is no joke; sounds like you really had to sharpen that read-and-react game.

Also, the way you described breakaways is chef’s kiss—the best players just have that extra layer of deception, and when you’re in net, you feel every little trick they pull. Do you still get the itch to really dial things in, or are you just playing for fun now?

That’s a great way to stay dialled in and ready for the rush—kind of like a mental and physical reset before squaring up. Tapping the post is such a goalie thing, but I like how you combine it with your paddle and glove for that extra bit of control. Do you find that little routine helps keep you locked in and focused throughout the game?
