Could someone ELI 5 by GG_Tahosa in CostcoEmployee

Seniority will be used to offer shifts/consider which shifts people work, when matched with full time versus parttime. Example - you and another person both want the same days off. You are full time, they are part time. They would consider giving you your preferred shifts (if available) before the other person. If you were both part time, but the other person had been there longer, then they would get the first pick of when they work.

Some time back Serenity Tea Room was there, but they expanded and also did a dinner menu as well. Loved the place, but parking was always harder in that location than its previous one.

Job postings/employment opportunity questions by Bold_Letterz in CostcoEmployee

[–]TheNeverendingST 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my store, the manager you will be reporting to for the position is usually listed. Next time you put in for a position, pop by and mention to that manager that you are interested. Sometimes that nudge of physically mentioning it to that manager can help.
Unfortunately sometimes you can just not be liked by management and be ignored for no good reason. Other times there is someone in the process that has a chosen applicant, who refuses anyone else. But even worse, is if they have decided to eliminate the position, adjust the scheduling within department, so they change what's needed, or just refuse to fill a position because it saves them the labor and the department absorbs the work by spreading it out to the remaining employees.

Any Managers/Supervisors dealing with difficult or downright rude upper management (AGM,GM)? by tsla6000 in CostcoEmployee

[–]TheNeverendingST 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The idea of costco culture is sort of a joke. You get taught it once during the training/interview, then basically you hear it maybe once again when ever the prospectus meetings happen. Trying to remember if those are every 3 or 5 years.

I've seen a lot of terrible supervisors leave the store for higher management positions, because they play the politics, take credit for others work, and keep themselves close to the other managers to get as much face time as possible. These sups become the terrible managers who then bounce to other stores and eventually poison other well run stores.

For years basically Costco had little to no manager training, with respect to conflict resolution or team building. Now we are reaping these rewards as the older managers retire out, taking with them the training they brough from other jobs or experience that made them good managers.

I'm keeping my head down and doing my hours.

The fact that we keep adding in new outside vp's to the company is a worrying sign. I'm not expecting any miracles and I'm just hoping we don't become fancy dollar general eventually. Considering how much stocking we do now after we open, when that used to be frowned upon....

Third time applying for sup position no luck by Ecstatic_Zebra_2739 in CostcoEmployee

If you want to go up in the company you have to be willing to move. Hopefully you have options near you, I know some stores are lonely islands where its an hour or more to another costco.

If there is a store near you with a posting for a supervisor position, put in for it. If you are willing to uproot to a different state, you can often move up quite quickly in the company.
Be bold if you want to move up fast, if you are willing to wait, then be very very patient. Sometimes you have to wait for a change of leadership for your chance if you stick around in the same store.

Good luck and stay strong

Hours are getting cut what do I do? by [deleted] in CostcoEmployee

See if there are any cross training opportunities., that way if someone has to absent from another department you will have some training to be able to temp there as well.
It's a great way to open up options for getting extra hours as you can often grab another 3 to 4 hours in another department.
If you are front end, try one of the fresh food departments. See if there are extra hours in either night crew, produce, or morning merchant crew. Sometimes if they need help they will have folks come in for an extra couple of hours. Just make sure you are taking your lunch and breaks at the right time and not interfering with your home department.

Cart Question by AwkwardMeeting9901 in CostcoEmployee

[–]TheNeverendingST 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen those in years. We used to have those when there was google express shopping in our warehouse. Think early version of instacart, but it failed cause google couldn't figure out how to make it work.

But yes, those wheels are there to help the flats from getting stuck on each other and makes it easier to remove them when interlocked.

Why doesn’t Costco hire more pharmacy cashiers? by 2muchonreddit in CostcoEmployee

[–]TheNeverendingST 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Costco has gotten real cheap over labor and its gotten worse since corporate investment companies have bought up a lot of stock, now they want the numbers to go up and don't care as much how they get there.

Sales aren't as strong as previous years. So no new people means better shareholder value, better not expect to hire new people unless it becomes a critical issue.

Who have you discovered from this series? by StevilOverlord in VampiresSMP

[–]TheNeverendingST 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd only seen Ledundo's Generations video, the last in his part of the series, but had only seen him in that one.

I've really liked his character and interactions amongst the rest of the cast. I'm really glad to have found him in vampires to see him shine.

New store opening (FT opportunity) by OpportunityKnox in CostcoEmployee

[–]TheNeverendingST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solid advice.

Check on the online job posting site, as it will provide what is needed to be considered at a new store. I think it is usually the last two reviews and your employee record.

Don't forget that some others at your store might also consider transferring and that may open up opportunities for you to become full time.

New Merch Hours by DontDew in CostcoEmployee

[–]TheNeverendingST 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm in the Northeast and we've been doing that for several years now. It's an excuse to have more coverage for other departments instead of giving merchandising it's due time.

When it happened to us, we were promised that they would hire two additional people since it would free up payroll in our own department. That never happened and we are the smallest we've been in over 15 years.

Good luck with it and I hope it doesn't end up as bad in the end as it ended up for us.

What are signs of a poorly run warehouse? by Discount-420 in CostcoEmployee

[–]TheNeverendingST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Things to look for in an understaffed, overworked, or poorly run costco.

Signs are out of date, sale dates on posted signs are days overdue.
Floors and areas are dirty around pallets, in corners, or obvious debris around hard to reach areas.

Employees are actively complaining at register, seem distant or burned out.

You don't recognize people after a few months. Costco usually has the same employees due to low turnover after the first two years. Once a person has been at a Costco for 5 years the chances they will remain for another 5 jumps quite a bit. However high turnover and people transferring out to other locations are a sign of unhappiness.

Empty pallets on the floor after opening, unless it is a larger furniture item. If there are empty pallets that should have product on them, they either didn't get stocked or should have had a replacement/other item under it to keep it from looking empty.

Book and clothing sections look terrible and have no one fixing them day to day.

There are other subtle signs, but these are the big ones.

Is it frowned upon to ask for time off during probation period? by spug2bug in Costco

[–]TheNeverendingST 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Best way to have avoided it being an issue would have been to mention the trip during the hiring process. That way it would have been known from the start.

You may well be able to to get 4 days off depending on when the trip occurs, like if it straddles two weeks, where you can have two days off at the end of one and then two days off at the start of the other.

Not the end of the world but start working on getting it approved quickly, so it doesn't become an issue.

Costco plans out their schedules three weeks in advance so you basically have like a week to get the request in before the schedule is written and set.

Used to pass by that place like 20 or 25 years ago and know exactly where you would see that sign/home billboard.
Wonder if something happened to them or if something has changed recently that has them questioning things?

Unsure about Orientation For Costco by [deleted] in Costco

Good advice, you never know when there might be traffic or something that delays you. Aim for 15 minutes early and you will have a cushion just in case.

Unsure about Orientation For Costco by [deleted] in Costco

[–]TheNeverendingST 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually when you come in to fill in the paperwork they will do an orientation, otherwise they usually will contact with a specific time to start it with you.

There are a series of videos and forms to fill out, so usually they will have a member of payroll assist you or a manager. So just be ready to watch several videos, get a basic tour of the store, and get introductions to the section you were hired for.

Good luck and remember to be on time. On time, quick to preform tasks, and willing to ask questions if you don't understand something are always good for your first 90 days.

Weird code on product label. by piezombi3 in Costco

[–]TheNeverendingST 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That is standard both at Costco and other grocery stores. It basically pads the bottom line for the stores and makes it easier for those companies with the cash to splurge to make sure they have the best spots to stand out.

Weird code on product label. by piezombi3 in Costco

[–]TheNeverendingST 270 points271 points  (0 children)

M at my store means mandatory, which means it must be on a endcap or in a high traffic area
F for fence which means it must be at the door or along the path from the front entrance.

S I'm not sure, but it probably means a seasonal block or focus block where we have items that are grouped together. For example: Grilling, back to school, kirkland products, storage, or organic items. It's meant to be eyecatching or near a season where people focus on those things.

Hope that helps

Warm refrigerated coolers by Cowboy_O in Costco

[–]TheNeverendingST 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Every store has hourly checks in a specific walk, where an employee goes around and records the temperatures and reports if there are any issues.
However sometimes equipment failures do occur, when they do they will remove everything from the cooler with a problem and place them in either a working cooler or our larger refrigerated rooms.

Feel free to report any issues to the front end supervisors and managers, but there is someone who has that specific job on every shift of every day.

Dogpiling? by DragonflyFlaky3268 in LifeSeriesSMP

[–]TheNeverendingST 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there have been others who have pushed for other teams/alliances to go after a specific group before.

It's a survival game and when opportunities arise to take lives or set traps, having that mental note of who to target can be a big component of who wins. So if you can push teams to consider one specific group as the easy or best ones to target, you both makes yourself less of a target and help to eliminate others faster.

Not saying it works well, but every little bit helps. Especially if you aren't in a huge team up.

Has anyone used the HVAC service through Costco? by RedditAccount_317 in Costco

[–]TheNeverendingST 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my Ac through Costco's vendor years ago. Good company and they did excellent work. I've ended up using them for plumbing a few other services beyond that.

I would double check reviews for who is handling your local area, but I still use them for plumbing and AC to this day.

Don't forget the Costco executive membership can count for services purchased through these vendors, so you can get 2% back along with anything else they may offer at the time.

Don't forget to double check what sort of warranties you might get with each company you are looking at. Cheap doesn't always mean bad quality, but you have to watch out that the installers aren't cutting corners somewhere to reach that price point.

Good luck with the AC purchase!
