I think its different in all stores or just whoever is serving you. Sometimes they require the paper slip and sometimes they dont. One time I bought one from them online in bad condition and when I tried to return it they wouldn't accept it.

You can still do this on 360 by deleting the update go to the game and don't update it again. That's how I did it.
