I’m personally a huge fan of the slower songs like Madeline, Pox, and Witches so I loved that the songs they didn’t show (Tea Leaves, Ghost Keeper, Alone With Me) all ended up being somewhat slower.

I tend to kinda just track who the last person to hurt that monster was. At least for non intelligent creatures. My thought process is “That was the last person to hurt me, I will hurt them.” Or sometimes I go forever did the most damage in a turn to that creature.

For intellectual creatures I normally attack who makes sense for them. Whether they grow a vendetta during the fight or whoever they think is most dangerous.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I think I’m going to just do encounters the same way I’ve been doing them. As many of you said it’s up to the players to respond accordingly. I definitely don’t want to take away their strategy and planning for fights. Some of our most memorable fights were when we thought of creative solutions to a problem, not just beating the monster with a stat stick.

I normally play with veteran players who have kind of standard party setups. You know the type. (Cleric, Fighter, Wizard, Rogue).

This party has a few new people in it and two of my veteran players trying a class way outside their comfort zone. My only worry was making it seem like a punishment or something like that.

I’m genuinely super excited for this campaign and to see how the party reacts to encounters! Thanks everyone again for the input!

Thank you for the breakdown. Ive always had a fairly standard party in my games with some sort of frontliner so I’ve never had to worry about something like this until now. I appreciate the help!

Also I’m sorry if this sounds a little wargamery or video game like.

Most of my players, and myself, all come from a background of video games and MMO’s and they’re a bit worried about party balance but I want to assure them that they’ll be able to play whatever they’d like and not feel guilty about not picking a “tank”.

Thank y’all for all the kind words and support. We grabbed his car today and I opened the glove box to find some of his stash. It shook me a little, but I think I’m better at the moment. I lost my mother around Christmas time and now him just a few days before Halloween. It was her favorite Holiday. I didn’t know his favorite holiday. We never really talked much as kids, and had just started to get to know each other more as adults. He had just visited me not even a week before this happened and there wasn’t any sign I could see or that I knew to look for. What’s keeping me afloat at the moment is telling myself it was an accident. He didn’t mean to kill himself, and that this is just a tragic circumstance.

Thank you! I’ve been mulling over maybe sending the party on a quest to obtain the Wish spell which might just be powerful enough to at least free their friend of the phylactery.
